    We will never tire of the chug chug chug of Aslan. One of the first channels we watched in our ‘planning phase’ of our own life aboard. Two years in and still no regrets. If anyone is on the fence about making the move, just do it. Life is too short for what ifs. 👍

    I couldn’t agree with you more; if the media says that the people overwhelmingly agree on an issue, it’s always the exact opposite! I won’t watch mainstream media and haven’t for years because they’re all bought and paid for liars. The trip today was absolutely beautiful with all the rolling hills and the farm animals! Thanks for another awesome Friday, Kevin!

    It seems that the stars aligned yesterday when my second favorite boater, Phil Ball, posted a short video showing none other than Aslan and that rather unkempt chap who steers her chugging by. I love watching Aslan navigate the locks and bridges; and your historical facts of sites we see. You seem to have the knack of thinking on your feet in every situation! I know I could never drive a Narrowboat. I admire that you chucked it all and bought Aslan. Not many of us are smart enough to do what makes us happy. And I am forcing myself to watch the commercials so you can get revenue. (Also I won’t ask about your religion).

    Another great video Kevin; love seeing you and Aslan chugging through our beautiful country. The little Westland Wasp helicopter was an added bonus .. only a couple of those left flying .. I remember seeing them down at the Portland Naval base (sadly long gone) back in early 1970’s at one of their open days … these little helicopters were sent to sea on the frigates of the day.
    Sad to see the continued destruction of our countryside by the “white elephant” vanity project HS2.. wish they would stop the first stage now the rest has been shelved! Living in Aylesbury, Bucks have this monstrosity right on my doorstep.. just a few yards from my home .. having them working through the night re-aligning the track down to Princes Risborough to let HS2 pass underneath .. Bucks has been torn apart for no reason now … I doubt you will ever get to Aylesbury even though we do have a branch of The Grand Union Canal that finishes in the town .. used to love walking with my border collie Pepsi along the tow path .. sadly she passed away on Tuesday (10/10/23) at grand old age of 14 & 1/2.

    There isn't much of our land untouched by agriculture these past thousands of years, save mire and fell. I think the most egregious damage of HS2 would have been done in The North and am quite happy that it is to stop where it is if we must have it at all.

    • @CountryHouseGent
      @CountryHouseGent  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Thank you Wayne. Yes there's some uncertain times ahead for canal users. If everyone refused to pay the license, I imagine CRT would diversify into the 'cranage and scrapping of boats' business.

    • @bren106
      @bren106 Před 10 měsíci +1

      If every boater refused to pay their fees locks and banks would slowly degrade until they fail, canals wouldn't get dredged, fallen trees wouldn't be removed and no armco would be maintained. And when a catastrophic failure occurs, as happened in Cheshire a couple of years back, who would repair and make the network whole again?

    It occurs to me that the canals were the HS2 of the day.
    I can just imagine some farmer, standing on the edge of the dig, chewing on his pipe and scowling at the diggers.
    "By god, I don' reckon much to this here arty-fishul river. Tearin' up the countryside, jus' to get their goods t'market faster. Havent they ever heard of good ol' horse and cart? It worked for me grandfather, and my father, and it works for me!"

    • @CountryHouseGent
      @CountryHouseGent  Před 10 měsíci +7

      I'd say you're right, though I can't imagine in 200 years time people will be looking at a few hundred miles of beige concrete, in the same way the canals are viewed today?

    • @bryanv1681
      @bryanv1681 Před 10 měsíci

      That's very possible. But HS2 could be done better. Rather than bury it in tunnels, driving the cost up so high that now the whole North wont see the benefit, they could have dug trenches to lower the track into the landscape, and planted hedges on either side. In effect, hiding the track.
      But everyone always wants to do building in the faster, less-effort way.

    • @eekee6034
      @eekee6034 Před 9 měsíci

      Just yesterday, I was reading about when the Chesterfield Canal was being built It was one of the first canals of the Industrial Revolution. People weren't sure it would make money, which reminds me of a lot of Internet commenters on new projects today. :) They also called it a "stillwater canal", because there had been boats all along, but it was amazing that now they wouldn't have to fight the current. What they were particularly scared of was tunnels; a boat going into a tunnel, disappearing under all the fields and what-not, and emerging miles away was very strange to them. On the other hand, many were eager for the trade advantages the canals would bring. The Chesterfield runs parallel to the Rother for quite a way, so why didn't they use the Rother? It was because the Rother was the route by which South Yorkshire coal reached its markets, and its merchants were the ones who set the tolls. The canal's promoters aimed to market Derbyshire coal in competition. ;) I got most of this from a little book called Norwood Tunnel by Christine Richardson, published by the Chesterfield Canal Trust

    Don’t trust a pseudo tipi.
    Don’t moor under a sappy tree.
    Don’t get ahead of yourself but don’t lag too far behind, either.
    Don’t assume good Armco(sic?) is good mooring.
    Don’t leave lamb chops on the counter all day.
    Flying South for the winter is usually a good thing.
    Don’t take CZcams comments too seriously.

    I hope that you have been keeping well Kevin! I have been going back and watching the early seasons once again which has been great. Hopefully you are getting some rest and relaxation and not just doing the editing. A pub visit and possibly a pork pie might be pleasant?!

    Well I needed that. What a charming part of the canal. So peaceful. Thanks for sharing. I couldn’t help but wonder about the history of that area. That might be a good chat someday as you’re traveling along? 😊

    Kevin it's funny that you Brits drive on the left side of the road but in the water with a boat move to the right.

      Passing on the right is international practice for all water based craft.

    I was just in Burton on Trent, having moored up at Barton Turn.. Never again, horrible place. Glad to be back on the boat and on the peaceful canal corridor. Cities and Towns…??? Keep ‘em, most people in them (not all) are horrible.

    Looks to me that boat that was dry docked is in its own pond just needs water. You do have Ozark people there.

      That boat came up in another video some time back. The family who own it had done exactly what CHG thought: dug a channel into their land, brought their boat in, and filled up the towpath. There was a lot less long grass and a lot more visible water back then -- it's not a dry dock.

    Remember the holiday boaters are still really in the fast paced world. They haven't had time to adjust to the ways of the canal time warp.

    Instead of riding high speed trains, travelers want to find and board a train that is there waiting in the station and will soon depart; and be running more frequently. That not only is more pleasant than waiting for a high speed train to depart, but it gets you to the destination faster. This is well known to the people in the railway industry. Also instead of making tracks high speed, such a the West Coast Mainline, increase the clearances on the bridges between the Channel Tunnel and the industrial Midlands. That will enable the transport of ISO shipping containers by rail which would take thousands of trucks off the roads.

      @@danensis I am aware of that proposal and it should have been implemented but for the morons in the UK government and egotistic Rail Track idiots.
