    When the TVS/Meridian studios at Northam. Southampton were shut down and they were holding auctions to sell off old equipment, I noticed a huge skip in the carpark about 6ft tall. Inside it was FULL of tapes (mostly Betacam and the odd VHS tape). I dread to think what was chucked out without copies saved.

    • @stickytapenrust6869
      @stickytapenrust6869 Před rokem

      I think this video is referring to the other TVS studios in Maidstone, when broadcast master videotapes were being slung in the bin. VHS and Betacam would have just been redundant viewing copies, not the master tapes.

      @@stickytapenrust6869 Yeah. If you look elsewhere on YT, there's a channel called "Made in Maidstone" which seems to be archiving a lot of old TVS stuff. I assume he is using their old tape(1 inch video - I believe).

    No 73 was a iconic in 80s kids TV and look at the success of some of the people involved, Sandi obviously, Neil Buchanan, do we need to say more, Andrea Arnold, Oscar winning film director/producer and the shows producer Nigel Pickard went on to be the big boss of the whole of ITV.

    The one thing I learned watching No. 73 was how to spell Ethel. Rent-a-Ghost also had a character by the same name, and I had never heard it before, from the pronunciation it sounded kind of like "Air Fall". But in one episode of 73 she had it on a T-shirt, and I though "Okay, I never would have guessed that spelling in a million years!"

    Hahahahhaha my dad was on number 73 and he was jules and his audition was very strange,he brought in his pet rat jaquez and did a bit he called "Jaquez climbs Mount Everest".So what he did was he put jaquez on the floor and said now jaquez will attempt to climb up mount Everest(my dad's leg),but jaquez just stayed still so he said jaquez will attempt it in a snow storm and he started rubbing his hair and a lot of dandruff started to fall out but jaquez still wouldn't move so he said jaquez will take the helicopter up instead, and lifted jaquez up and put him upside down and jaquez's tail started spinning around and jules started making helicopter noises and put jaquez on his head and said thank you very much this was jaquez doing "jaquez climbs Mount Everest"and the people judging the auditions started laughing and said we have to have you on our show😂

    Why keep? Because, some of these new formats have been found to be not-so indestructable later on. For instance, CDs and DVDs really should be 'copied' every 2 - 4 years, as they can degrade with time, and if you scratch them, can become useless. At least if you damage one part of a tape, the rest of it is ususable.
    I am not trying to start an argument. Just stating a few facts.
    I think that the Beeb (as usually) are being foolish; ALWAYS keep your originals in a safe place.

    They were more often 'wiped' as video tape was damn expensive in the past, and live kid's programmes had no value, as far as TV channels were concerned.

    I remember when TISWAS finished and No.73 replaced it on a Saturday morning.
    My Dad who worked nights, use'd to get up early to watch TISWAS because it was so funny & unpredictable.
    Saturday mornings were a ritual.The first morning No.73 was shown, myself & my younger brother sat there gobsmacked, almost in tears that they even had the audacity to replace classic kids Saturday morning TV with this sterile, childish crap.
    Sandy Toksvig was about as funny as cramp back then but these days she isn't as funny as she used to be.

    • @KrillLiberator
      @KrillLiberator Před 5 lety +2

      It was far more welcoming and engaging to me than the threateningly anarchic chaos of TISWAS, which just felt like a load of teenagers had taken over the tv. (I was 8 and teenagers were pretty intimidating).

      Agreed, I was just the right age for Number 73 and loved it, Tiswas just didn't click with me. It's only recently that I've discovered just how much work went into Number 73 - it was cleverly done and a seriously high quality show, much better than anything produced for kids now.

    • @itsjemmabond
      @itsjemmabond Před rokem

      No 73 wasn't a bad show, I just feel it appealed to teenagers more than it did children. The Saturday Show was better, but yes, TISWAS reigned.

    *At least she didn't become a bland, boring and tiresome person like the once-funny Margaret Cho. Cho was funny until all her act became was a long, dull preach about the sufferings of being a lesbian on earth (who's also ASIAN, to boot). Sandi's amusing without such 'political' neediness*
