Bass Reeves The Badest Lawman of the Old West

- Who is the most badass law man of the old west, Wyatt Earp, Bat Masterson, Wild Bill Hickock, or maybe someone else? It's someone you maybe never heard of, Bass Reeves. This is his story. His accomplishments dwarf his more famous contemporaries yet his legacy is far less known.
Ryan Reaves, who is probably the toughest player in the NHL, is Bass Reeve's great great great grand son.
Bass Reeves is the original Lone Ranger. It’s about time Hollywood does a movie about him.
Lots of commenters have suggested a movie about Bass Reeves Catherine. I agree that it would be a good subject for a film. Thanks for watching.
They did, it's called The Chronicles of Bass Reeves, #1. Looking forward to the rest. It's an excellent movie too, and well cast.
Bullshit. See my post above:
////////// As far as him being the basis of The Lone Ranger, that's bullshit too. The Lone Ranger was a complete work of fiction created by a radio station writer in the early 1930s. He was the same guy who created The Green Hornet. The station owner later claimed credit and the two fought over it for the rest of their lives. Neither one ever heard of "Sam Bass."
The term "Ranger" was well-known in the Old West. Both Texas and Arizona had Ranger companies. The Lone Ranger's name was eventually revealed to be Texas Ranger Allen King and then at another time, Texas Ranger Captain John Reid. ///////////
@@historymore442 I’d love to see a movie about James Beckwourth... Morgan Freeman is the spitting image of him, maybe a little old now. ..... based on what I’ve read he was a larger than life personality, and would make a great film👍🏽
There have been a few Bass Reeves films, more in production, numerous books, and dozens of youtube documentaries.
I had never heard of Bass Reeves until today as I am not an American....but after watching the video it is clear he was one of the best lawmen ever to pin a badge on his shirt....It's almost criminal that a movie or mini series has not been done on this man...What an incredible man, and role model unlike the so called role models we see today...
he served until the the Woodrow Wilson Administration Eliminated all the non white from the Bureaucracy
He was black. America so far has not been really interested in black cowboy heroes.
An amazing story of a brave and amazing lawman.
Thanks for sharing this untold historical story
Glad you liked it sauropod. Thanks for watching.
I do know about Bass Reeves but his is a story well worth repeating. Thanks
Fascinating story for sure Big Blue. Thanks for watching.
i approve this message.
Very well presented . thanks for sharing . He was a great American indeed .
my grandfather served as a deuty marshal in west Texas during the same time and told me about Bass Reeves ho he said was the greatest lawman he ever knew.
Yeah overland voyager, apparently Bass was a helluva lawman. Thanks for watching.
I can see Denzel Washington play the role of Bass Reeves in a movie, or a Netflix multi episode program.
Yeah he a little too old now. Maybe if this was 15 years ago.
Denzel Washington is one of my favorite actors, he was great in the reboot of the Magnificent Seven. He could play Bass Reeves flawlessly!
please no denzzzzelllll theirs a recently made movie I will try n find the name MOST were uninterested.... just like the movie supremacy with diana's Ross son n donald Glover
HELL ON THE BORDER 2019 TRUEST MOVIE AMAZING MOVIE ...........HELL ON THE BORDER .....IM FINNA FINDTHIS MOVIE NWATCH IT AGAIN thank u soso much ...hell on the border
Yesss!!!
Thank you for this story. It's a shame that Bass Reeves isn't more renowned. It is said that he even wore disguises to catch people he was after. He story would make a great movie and there should be a statue dedicated to him.
Incredible story Carl. Maybe in a very small way this video helps revive that story. Thanks for watching.
He is briefly depicted at the beginning of the HBO series 'WATCHMEN'.
Delroy Lindo will also play Bass Reeves in the upcoming 'THE HARDER THEY FALL' (Netflix).
I lived in Ft. Smith Arkansas. I found out about Bass . His picture should be up there with the rest of the great lawmen.
For sure Garry. Thanks for watching.
@Garry Wagner: Deputy Marshall Bass Reeves & his accomplishments are prominently displayed at the U.S. Marshall's Museum in Ft.Smith, Arkansas as well as a statue of Reeves, dedicated in 2010 by actor Morgan Freeman, in front of the temporary museum.
What a tough man . I can’t believe I never heard of him before. I would love to watch a series with him being the lead.
Beside the lone ranger he sounds like the character Clint Eastwood played in hang em high. The judge in that movie, (pat hingle) was known as the hanging judge.
Bass worked for the real life hanging judge.
America needs some men like him today.
I agree Tommy. Thanks for watching.
RMAOFL . . . . whatever you say Snowflake
Wow, very well made video. We have been trying to preserve history too. Thanks for the inspiration!
Glad you enjoyed it!
a very well made 9 min doc sir!
indeed i have never heard of bass reeves until today.
thank u and have a wonderful and safe day sir.
Thanks for your support and kind words roulan yu.
You've heard of him before Hollywood took his story and made up a t.v. show called the Lone Ranger
I just stumbled on this channel. Maybe i shouldn’t say anything but it’s just so refreshing to hear a white Southern gentleman giving props to an African American. Nice video, I’m a bit of a history buff and I’ve never heard of Bass Reeves before. Subscribed!
Welcome aboard and thanks.
That's because that "Southern gentleman" is full of shit, a coward and hasn't done any real research. He'd rather be a politically correct twerp than a real historian. See my post above for the real truth about Reeves. This is revisionist bullshit.
@@johnnyquest5727 Ah there’s the anti-black, hate filled comment that I’m used to hearing from Americans.
@@johnnyquest5727 Yo Johnny I’m trying to find your post and I can’t find it. Can you link me to it ASAP, I’m doing a presentation and if what you say is true I need to decide to divert or continue course sort of speak. Get back to me immediately or your a bitch.
Thank you Sir for raising the awareness of men like Bass it was a real revelation.
All the best
Very well narrated & true. Oral history was how we past our history down to the next generation because you would never see it in movies or read these truths when I was young.
Thank you for presenting American history.
Why is this amazing history seem buried. This is truly amazing. To survive in this dangerous job, in these dangerous places had to be insurmountable. I'm greatly impressed. I wish that I could have been there to see him doing his job.
Yes a virtually unknown but significant piece of history. There are literally thousands of amazing but seemingly buried stories out there. This channel tries to tell some of them.
Why do you think? Hmmmm?
How very baffling that 76 folks did not enjoy this fine bit of history
There's always a few Michael.
He was a great lawman and how sad for him to have to arrest his own son.
Exceptional story . I never tire of hearing or reading a good story about this great American patriot hero .
Well done !
I’m surprised Hollywood hasn’t done anything with his story. Thanks for bringing it to our attention!
Would make a good movie.
They’ve done a few independent films about him hell on the border is the latest
He is briefly depicted at the beginning of the HBO series 'WATCHMEN'.
Delroy Lindo will also play Bass Reeves in the upcoming 'THE HARDER THEY FALL' (Netflix).
Nice ! I've never heard of him. Thanks for the history lesson.
What great man what a great life story.
As an avid Western Fan I have known about Bass Reeves for many years. He was a Great Law Man 🤠🐴. The Deputies He worked with were Awesome 👍. Sadly Hollywood and History have long neglected these brave Heroes. Bill Tilghman, Chris Madsen, Heck Thomas worked the same areas that Bass Reeves worked. These men were The Best There Was in The Indian Nation Wilderness. 🤠🐴👍
That's quite a story. Thanks for putting it together.
Quite a story for sure Todd. Thanks for watching.
Bass was one of the most feared and respected law officers in the old west . he was the real deal . 17 none gun fights and never a scratch but a few holes in clothing., one hole in hat. people some people upon hearing bass had a warrant for them would go and give up so not deal with with bass Reece. he would not stop until he he caught them. if he came to arrest you, you had two choices, hands up to surrender or go hands up to surrender or hands down for a gun fight .
Yep Johnny, quite a lawman. Thanks for watching the video.
Bass Reeves was feared and respected by some, but not others, like many Wild West lawmen. The popular gunfighter trope that he was in numerous armed affrays, but never wounded by a bullet is untrue. In Bass' many gunfights, he was not invincible as recent myths and the internet repeatedly state. There are several contemporary accounts that say Bass was shot in the left leg in a fight, which handicapped him for the rest of his life. You can even see physical evidence of this injury in one well-known photograph of Bass, where he is holding a cane in his left hand. The old media trope that Bass "always got his man" can also be easily disproved. In one 1890 newspaper, Bass and his posse burned famed renegade Ned Christie's house down around him, but the Cherokee escaped and Bass dynamically did not get him. There's no reason to make deputy Bass Reeves more than he was, a great Oklahoma lawman, who sometimes got shot and failed like all humans. He was not super human and he was not a masked vigilante or the inspiration for any stereotyped or fictional TV/ movie gunslinger.

Wellllllllllllllllll!
Don't we feel superior!
Didn't know you wanted to participate, Mr. Helper!
@@TheBatugan77 I guess I'm not superior to your rhetorical logic if I can't decipher want you mean.
@@TheBatugan77 Yet still, a week later, you like so many others can't refute my statements on Bass Reeves with factual information. As I often say the real lawman was more interesting than the movie reel vigilante.
This runs counter to so many narratives. Great story!
Bss
Bass Reeves one of the best stories that was never told !
No doubt Rex. Thanks for watching.
We need today’s Bass Reeves!
Never heard of him. Total badass!! 🇺🇸🤠🇺🇸👊🇺🇸
Yeah Mike that is what makes the story all the more incredible. He should have gotten more recognition. Maybe this video can help in a small way. Thanks for watching.
Thanks so much, learned something new.
Glad you enjoyed it William. Thanks for watching.

Heard of this gentleman from Jerry Skinner. Good job giving Mr. Reeves his well deserved props. As a lifelong history buff, ALL history captivates me.
Thanks for watching TheBatugan77.
Great Work, 10 minute Educational History. Outstanding!
Keep them coming.
Thanks for the kind words Scott, and thanks for watching the video.
This was a tremendous historical portrait!
Bass Reeves was a founder of Oklahoma, a black man born a slave turned free man, a law man and gun fighter, and an American original
A unique man for sure K.L.
Very interesting and informative part of history that needs to preserved and told. Well done sir. Iam an Oklahoma decendent with cherokee roots.

Amazing story/documentary, learnt something new today which surprised me. A film needs to be made about Bass Reeves life.

Thanks for watching Carl.
No you didn’t little boy, you had fairy’s for fasher’s. You need to prove to me this right now or you will shut your mouth.
Thank you for the lesson and keeping history alive.
You're welcome Daniel.
My great, great grandfather "Bud Ledbetter" was a marshal in Ft. Smith also...
I've heard of him. Emmett Dalton thought highly of him.
Bass has been an example to me since I first read about him
A man is a man regardless of nationality colour of skin or religious beliefs
Bass was certainly a heroic figure
Excellent work as always. Thank you.
Thanks for watching The6thRonin.

Enough said.
excellent doc!!!
Thanks for watching Linda.
Bass was one heck of a great deputy Marshall
Very true deputydog. Thanks for watching the video.
Thanks for sharing this video of a true American hero👍👍👍🇺🇸
You bet. Thanks for watching Bill.
It's sad such a heroic man is not better known. His life would make a great series of novels, and films. It's hard these days for such stories to be told without the story being changed to suit a film makers agenda. I too would love to see a film that could justice to his life. It sounds like besides accurate research possibly being hard, the toughest thing might be having to choose what to include.
I think eventually rather soon there will be one.
@@kenkaplan3654 It really needs a serious treatment that goes the whole ten yards, with decent casting, good research, acting, directing, budget, and location.
@@lenwenzel7440 I agree totally. Something of the quality of "Hell on Wheels" or the recent "Billy the Kid". The guy was clearly as amazing as Wyatt Earp and Earp has had dozens of movies. I do think it will happen.
Wow fascinating. What a remarkable mam.I truly admire mr Reeves.
I agree Diane. Thanks for watching.
Excellent video on a genuine Oklahoman, and American, hero.
Glad you enjoyed it.
Thank you so much for such a great video. Never heard of this lawman but was astounded he arrested over 3,000 lawbreakers over a 32-year career. And he nearly got killed in a shootout! Great job and say hi to Baxter!
I hope things are well with you Born and Raised. Yep incredible lawman. I'll tell Baxter. He appreciates people recognizing him. thanks for watching.
He was 71 when he died
Yes sir I'm surprised there hasn't been a movie made of this famous lawmen it would make a great Hollywood movie give me a couple episodes of whatever documentary be nice
Great storry
Thanks for watching Gary.
Damn skippy. It's about freaking time.. We need the truth out.
Thanks for watching Benson.
There's a whole bunch of movies in this man's life.
Would make a good movie.
He is briefly depicted at the beginning of the HBO series 'WATCHMEN'.
Delroy Lindo will also play Bass Reeves in the upcoming 'THE HARDER THEY FALL' (Netflix).
Very interesting video.
Glad you think so!
Yes I became aware of him about 10 to 15 years ago.yes and the truth shall set you free.
Thanks for watching Lyes.
Such an lesser-known story of such a black legend. Criminal he doesn't have a western movie of his own
Great Story.👏💕👏💕
Glad you enjoyed it!
I'm a writer, and I've been looking for a good story. I'm excited about this project.
Hope you have much luck with the project. Come back and let us know when it is completed.

Very interesting!
Glad you think so Dry Line Drifter. Thanks for watching.
A great man. Great American
Interesting, thanks.
Thanks for watching!
Great story
Glad you enjoyed it Ernest.
Reeves also appears in the BBC adaptation of Jules Verne's Around the World in 80 Days. Portrayed by the British actor Gary Beadle, Reeves unexpectedly encounters Phileas Fogg and his travelling companions on board a stagecoach, and ends up drawing them into his fight to bring a criminal to justice.
Denzel Washington should do a movie and play his part
Awesome!!!!
Thanks for watching USN WT
@@historymore442 being a former military man, I like military history and law history. I think it would do a lot of Americans well, to have more understanding of what made this country better from one decade to the next. Bass Reeves, definitely was one of them men that helped make it better
Hopefully Hollywood will make a quality factual movie about Bass. Danzal Washington would make a perfect Bass Reeves.
Would love to see a movie about this gentleman
Would make a good one. Thanks for watching margaret.
amazing story of a great American. its literally CRIMINAL that this mans story is not well known. as a white man, i grew up with my heroes, not all white mind you , i was raised proper and learned early on that men like Boone, Crockett, Bridger, and men like Doris Miller, Ben Davis, and Dan "Chappie" James were cut from the same cloth. im just learning of this man, and im literally sad i had not learned of him as a child where i could have placed him on that pedestal of great men that i came to wish to emulate. there's GOTTA be a movie in this, the History backing the fact that a Black man was literally a Marshall bringing in bad guys like Rooster Cogburn but real just HAS TO get done. i imagine how the mindset of Black boys growing up could change having role models portrayed in film like i had growing up, where you at Denzel? you would be PERFECT for the role. this guy could literally be a Black John Wayne type of caricature.
Well said Mike. Thanks for watching.
Good story
