Every little bit helps -- in my day job as a scientist, I don't make all that much, and every game I show on this channel has been purchased by me (no review copies)! I guarantee every quid you send my way will be spent producing more and better content for you fine folks :)
Today we carry on directly from last week's video, and talk about the Core Set for Twilight 2000 (the 4th Edition), once again from Free League Publishing.
This game modernises a GDW classic from ages past, and uses a combination of the elegance of the Year Zero Engine (here in 'step-dice' form like Blade Runner, as opposed to D6 dice pools) with very well-designed combat rules that reward good tactical choices.
The game is based on the concept of the players being soldiers, or rather hardy civilians, who have survived a horrific nuclear war in an alternate history where the Soviet Union never collapsed. What happens in the game is very heavily player-driven, as the Referee will pretty much just set you loose somewhere on a hex-map and let you decide where to go and how to survive. Travel will wear you down, food and supplies are hard to come by, hazards like raiders and patrolling Soviet forcees are everywhere, and the supply of bullets is short (so short in fact that they're used as currency!).
So, the game is a grim post-apocalypse, but certainly has its own atmosphere, and the combat seems to me both highly dangerous and very fair, in that good tactical decisions and teamwork will strongly influence the outcome. Ultimately, I'm very excited to get this to my table, and if you like a bit of wargaming mixed in with your post-apocalyptic RPGing, then I'd suspect you'd be excited too!
