- This is my favourite of the two classic car shows held every year at the NEC in Birmingham. The November show focuses more on immaculately restored cars (although there are a few projects dotted around), but the emphasis at the Practical Classics Classic Car & Restoration Show held in March of this year (2022) was very much on un-restored cars, original cars, barn-finds, rusty cars and work-in-progress restoration projects. There are shiny restored cars of course, but the %age of un-restored classic cars and other vehicles is much higher and, as I'm fond of "barn find" derelicts, I feel a bit more at home at this event.
During my visit I photographed many hundreds of vehicles, on club stands, trade stands, and also in the vast classic car auction area where there were some great cars to be found. I couldn't feature everything in this collection, so I've picked some of the more standout vehicles, many of which prompted memories for me as cars that belonged to various neighbours and friends when I was growing up (have I grown up? mmmm).
While many cars achieved high prices in the auction, a few sold for comparatively modest sums, a couple of which I think I'll be kicking myself over for not having a go at for some time to come .... see the video and let me know if you agree.
There was something for everyone at the 2022 NEC restoration show. Highlights for me definitely include the wonderful "barn find" Jowett Bradford ice cream van, the much-dis-assembled Standard 10 Companion, wonderful vans in the shape of the Riley 9 and the vintage Bean light commercials, an eye-catching pre-war Tatra, a soooo original mid-1930s Rover saloon, the Frisky Sprint (the Frisky club stand is always worth a look), and a faded but very sound (and rare) Austin A70 Hampshire pickup.
Hopefully this selection of photos will give an overview of this excellent event, please let me know in the comments which of the classic cars featured here were your favourites.

got to love the corsair estate
Thanks for the Video on classic British cars.
Glad you enjoyed it
Another very interesting lineup of cars. I can't believe the prices of some of those auctioned. Glad I wasn't there or I'd have the old oily boiler suit on again.
That Super Snipe Est. is absolutely magnificent. A great set of photos as always.
great many thanks !
Excellent selection of worthy attendees! Well done for concentrating on older vehicles. Most reports seem to think that nothing earlier than a Golf GTi is worth looking at.
I tried to look at old and newer but my preference is the former :-)
Loved the old ice cream van, hope it gets restored back to it's original self, also liked the old Willerby caravan it looked in immaculate condition.
2:15 I can't believe those downspouts on the corners of that caravan - absolutely unbelievable !
another great video love the mk 1 transit camper and what a bargain was the packard 8
Wished I could go but nec is sooo massive and my old body won't let me walk round 🙁 so love the pictures and videos I see on here, watched 2 hub nut vids yesterday
You asked which favs, I like the Jags, the old Austins and Morris's
Think its time I looked in to getting a mobility scooter 🤭
Thanks for pics 👍
Thanks for this review ,couldn’t make the show so handy to be able to peek in with your video.
Great video! Love the period info. Details Furious Driving and Hubhut do not give.
Thanks for watching!
A great selection of photos from the show. Thank you.
The pre war and cars from the 40's are just wonderful. What a gem the Bradford Ice-Cream van is!
Great photos, when we go back to England, I want to co-ordinate the trip so I can attend this show. Love the old 2 stroke Saab's. Love to see a Saab Sonnet in the flesh.
The November show is much larger but one day isn't enough to get around it, so plan on two days minimum unless you like rushing!
I had. Spitfire Mk 3 for my first car here in the USA…. My only British car.
12:25 You can tell it's a genuine Ford - by the colour ;)
A great collection of classic cars, The three P1800's were all from The Saint TV shows of the 1960/70's, Nice Bob
More Saab 96's please love them. Thanks Gary
I'll do my best - you've seen the SAABs photo collection vid already?
i was there on sunday and my favourite was the white mk1 transit van. by the looks of it i doubt it had ever even seen a bag of cement!
That was great, really enjoyed that stroll down memory lane. I was amazed at how many of these old models I've owned buying them for a few hundred dollars or less at the end of their lives, many I got for nothing but the price of getting them running again, driving them till they died or fell apart, and moving on to the next cheap old bomb. As a young guy driving old 50's 60's n 70s cars hard killed them or bent them in a few months to a year but they were cheap and plentiful at the time, traffic laws weren't enforced so diligently and the penalties were nowhere near as harsh back then. Driving old cars and fixing the many little issues that stopped them going did teach me a lot and I enjoyed playing with cars. I was even too cheap to buy new parts unless I absolutely had to, even using 2nd hand oil if it leaked or burnt a lot. I still remember when I got the first car built in the 70s, an old Ford Falcon and then the 80s a Toyota, and I still drive a car built in 98. I think 2001 is the newest car I've ever owned LOL. Thanks for reminding me of the fun I had ;).
Thanks for watching!
Hi Rick loved all the cars on show I would love to see that Jowet ice cream in full time use and I own a mk1 Transit Jennings motor home it was nice to see that mk1 Transit all the best Paul
I’m all for any old style Jaguar especially The XJ type.
parents had an 1800 when i was little. D reg. lovely car, leather seats as standard, ineffectual handbrake in the dashboard and the dip/full beam light was a foot button. it had horizontal slit shaped lights on the back and i think they changed the design of them as the years went by. turning circle less than a tank and my mum got trapped on a hairpin corner on the road down from harlech castle and because of the ineffectual handbrake, couldn't do a reverse hill start to back away from a stone garden wall. big man (in a plastic pig) going the other direction stopped and actually braced himself against the front of the car to give the handbrake a fighting chance. 😄 aahh! summer days out in wales with sweaty cheese sandwiches in a tupperware box on the back window shelf, chipsticks and orange squash.
I guess you were there Friday from the photos? It wasn't too busy then. If I had known you were about it would have been nice to say hi. Great collection of photos. I was very impressed at the amount of activity on the Armstrong Siddeley stand. A lot going on and the big 20 Laundulet very interesting to see.
I went Saturday, got there early doors before it got too busy, I did think about going Friday but thought I'd avoid weekday traffic on the M42/M6
toyota celica mk1 is one of my top classic cars.
I'll have to make the trip to this show one year.
Hello all the way from Auckland, New Zealand
Hello from Wellington 🌞
Hello from Mataura
Hi from the UK!
Hi Allan!
Hi David!
I liked the 1960 Morris Van ... I didn't know Brit Car Shows has some cars partially taken apart - never seen that in the US.
Hi, this show has an emphasis on restoration projects, un-restored cars, barn finds etc etc although there are also lots of shiny cars too. Thanks for watching
@@oldclassiccarUK I have been resto-modding my Uncle's 1996 Chevrolet Caprice LS for 4 years - he paid 21k for it new ... 4.3L
Dark green Jaguar, #150
I like you have never seen a 'woody' prefect , wounder if it was 'coach built' as a special? I love all the old jaguar cars . I believe E-Type's sell for large sums of money. I do wounder why some of those vehicles sold so cheaply, maybe they had no reserve wich is always risky or as I heard recently some pre.50's models seem to be selling at bargin prices . It could be that people are frightened to work on them, i don't know. Anyway thanks for the snapshot tour much appreciated. 👍
Yes I'm sure the Prefect was a one-off, built by an enterprising carpenter somewhere
3:45 WOW - a police escort - LOL.
Riley 9 van: Riley never made vans, but this is a recent creation by Blue Diamond Riley Services (at Bicester Heritage) and was built from a 1935 Kestrel.
I think it's been a van for a while, a search online for its registration showed it pre-restoration, with a taller rear roof, my guess it was first converted maybe back in or shortly after WW2?
Loved the Vitesse coupe, are you planning to pop down to Brighton on the 8th of May for the finish of the HCVS London - Brighton run? My Cologne built 1944 is entered and there’s a strong steam contingent this year👍
I'd like to but it's a fair old trek from here
Great selection of photos. I love the ice cream truck. Can't believe the price on that Packard although it probably was in the wrong country for maximum bidding. Did it happen to have a 2 litre diesel conversion? Ha Ha.
Pretty sure the original straight-eight was under the bonnet
that would have sold in Canada for around $15k CDN.
Hi Rick, I was there on the Saturday, saw you from a distance (recognised the hat 😂) then you disappeared in the crowd was going to say hello.
Some fantastic displays. My favourite in show was a P4 Rover 110 in maroon. The paintwork was immaculate.
They were trying to start that Rover 10 hp you showed, using easy start it kept bursting into flames 😳
That Humber Hawk Estate would make a great replacement for the Volvo you sold?
David
:-)
I didn't see the start attempts on the Rover 10, not sure easy start does anything any favours really. Yes a mighty Humber estate would be a great "regular user" although the fuel bills might not be insignificant ... something sub-2 litre would probably be better for me
I'm surprised they attempted starting anything as I thought when you're in the halls they have to be virtually drained of fuel and what about fumes?
@@peterlangridge4639
My thoughts entirely. I don’t think they succeeded anyway
The Volvo P1800's do it for me. Give me a hand to push start....anyone?
A wonderful selection of photos, with many memories. Pity about the background music - too monotonous; you should be able to do better than that!
I agree that the Allegro estate was a better looking vehicle than the saloon - one of the vehicles that I regret letting go. As a youth I often dreamed of a Super Snipe estate, but it never happened. I do have a pre-production Land Rover 127 sitting in a barn, waiting for someone to 'find' it in due course.
I had a Celica in the mid 70s in Germany (I was there with BAOR) but sold it when I left as it was a left hooker. I was disappointed that it wasn't the babe magnet I hoped it would be, probably the wrong pole to me.
07:25 'C' reg isn't necessarily 1965. In March 1965 my dad imported an Austin A55 that had been used overseas for some years and it received a 'C' plate - DYE518C. I can't remember when DVLC switched from date of registration to date of manufacture for the age indicator; maybe coincident with the introduction of 'Q' plates.
I don't suppose the current fuel prices had anything to do with the £5K plus extras, Packard straight eight?? Suitable for a large family? Foden-type fuel consumptions?? :)
There were plenty of other larger-engined cars in the auction that seemed to do ok, somehow old US iron tends to get overlooked which can make for some great buys IMO
Fave? - gotta be the 65 Morris Minor van @ 7:30 ..............always wanted a moggy van but never ''got round to getting on''
The green one? yes a very nice van and looked mostly original paint too
@@oldclassiccarUK Yup, the greenie meanie
Loving that hatchback XJS! That Packard for £5k........any idea why it was so cheap?
I didn't have a close look at the Packard but from a cursory inspection it looked fab, it needed some re-commissioning I believe but all the photos on the auction's website looked promising
Were Snipe wagons not a 3/4 scale Rambler Wagon? What did the Chrysler conv bring please. When is the 2023 show?
The high bids are over on the CCA auctions website I think, from memory the Chrysler did £12,600 (now on ebay ....), I don't yet know the 2023 dates. There's the main classic car show held at the NEC in November this year.
I can’t believe that packard sold for $5000 😮
what is the red, #17 ?
1940 Willys coupe, much favored in drag racing, (I was surprised this didn't get a mention)
The Trabant seems a later model… sure your not thinking of Warburg?
Hi, the pale blue Trabbie shown is the early sixties version, later ones were squarer (like the yellowy one you can just see over to the right)
18:49 is a Riley Drophead Coupe, not a roadster
Ah ok thanks for the info
@@oldclassiccarUK Did you get my email about the Riley/Epps DHC and various other cars from my family?
The music is so annoying, is it really necessary?
the all aggro was junk
