  • In this Excel video tutorial, we gonna see how to Prevent Duplicate Values in Excel, how to Prevent Duplicate data entry in Excel. The value can only apper once in the list.
We will learn 2 different methods to prevent repeated values from being inserted into an Excel table or a database or any other type of table.
the first method is used data validation in Excel with the Countif function so that all values entered in the range are counted and if the count if formula returns a result greater than 1 it means that the item has already been previously inserted in the same list, thus validation data will block entry of this item to prevent repetition. The count if in Excel, is a formula to count the number of cells that meet a certain criteria.
The second method we can use conditional formatting so that we can highlight in red or highlight in yellow or highlight in green or any other color you want the values that are repeated but the conditional formation will not prohibit the entry of repeated data but it will indicate the data that is repeated.
Additionally, you can use both methods together, conditional formatting and also data validation with the Count formula.
You can also customize the error message and input message. Every time you click on a cell the input message will appear to you indicating what needs to be done and the error message will appear whenever a duplicate value has been entered.
