    One major feature that was left out of the review, so far, is the all important AC+DC function and a minor omission was the fact that the LCD backlight has 2 steps of intensity.

    The latching type actually closes a "switch" for a brief moment when there is continuity to ensure the buzzer is sounded correctly without any scratching or brief beeps that may not be heard.

    Thanks! (7 years later) I came because I wanted to know how to read frequency and duty cycle of square waves 45:43. I need to code software to drive micro servos, so this will be a valuable tool for debugging.

    Martin, great review. I've been looking to upgrade to a better meter, but as I am simply a hobbyist, I cannot justify spending $300-$400 on a meter. I have a small solar project in the works and I think this meter fits the bill - love the resolution and data logging software. Thanks for the review!

    I have a question about UT61E. Have you checked its frequency response? I don't remember a part of your 61E review dealing with that. I would be glad to know the accuracy of its frequency response.
    Thanks in advance.

  • @mjlorton
    @mjlorton  Před 11 lety

    Thanks for the info and feedback. I think part of your query should have been answered in part 2.
    In terms of the continuity tester....most cheaper multimeters have a non-latching type, this means the "buzzer" only sounds when there is a continuous circuit "in contact" / made by the leads. If the leads or connection are rough / intermittent then the buzzer may sound scratchy or only do a slight "beep" that might not be heard.

    I'm probably going to get the UNI-T UT71C, I think it's basically the same though the data logging is only 100 points which is a damn shame, even the one model lower is still 100, I am hoping there is a firmware tweak or something I can do to unlock the rest of it.
    Anyways just starting t watch the video but looking forward to it.

  • @DanFrederiksen
    @DanFrederiksen Před 11 lety

    Good and interesting.
    I'd say don't be afraid to compare with fluke and agilent on readings, not just on the DC voltage but resistors and caps etc. the more the merrier.
    it's not unfair to compare to more expensive meters, they can serve as references and if they do equally well it only reflects positively on the cheaper model.
    maybe check if connecting at the same time interferes. you may have to measure one at the time.
    you could also compare to UT61E. it's more than twice the cost.

    HI I have a question hope you ca read this. I'm looking for a multimeter and was looking at 2 models. UNI-T UT71D and UNI-T UT61E. On the 61E review, there was a lag on continuity test and after you change the leads to a quality(fluke) leads the lag on continuity issue is gone? 71D also has a lag on it. Does it also fix this issue when you use quality leads? Thanks

    Muy buen Instrumento UT71D funciona a la perfeccion para Laboratorio ademas de ser elegante su diseño. Tengo varios Instrumentos de esta marca y la verdad siempre dieron buenos resultados. El instrumento UT803 a pesar de se un instrumento sencillo reponde a la perfeccion la medicion True RMS hasta 100Khz con señales No sinusoidales,algo que otros instrumentos tienen limitado a 1 Khz ,pasando esa frecuencia pierden precision,como por ejemplo el Fluke 115,117,etc.

      IngenieroCristian Si eh tenido ese instrumento y responde bastante bien, es muy preciso Lindo diseño aunque no es de la gama alta de UNIT esta orientado para el ambiente Industrial, cumple con las medidas de seguridad y es de un precio muy competitivo. UT 60H es parecido pero mas elavorado 400MHZ en el rango de Frecuencia, Un capacimetro de hasta 40.000 microfarados,Tambien es TRUE RMS igual que el TU61E,que por cierto Los eh probado con un Generador de Funciones inyectando señales Diente de Sierra, cuadrada PWM a casi 2 Khz y mantenia la presicion, Con señal sinusoidal llegaba a los 2Khz con presicion.Esto es bueno ya que el fabricante dice que es para 1khz true RMS y mas que suficiente para trabajar con UPS u otros osciladores.Creo que es muy buen instrumento ademas de permitir descargar los datos al ordenador. Se puede visualizar los Picos y valor relativo.

      Faster continuity test:
      1. Turn the range switch to Ohm and select the diode mode by pressing the blue button twice. You are now in the 4V range.
      2. Press the RANGE/SETUP button until the meter beeps and displays OFF in the 'low' setting.
      3. Press the HOLD button once to access the count display.
      4. Press the HOLD button repeatedly to select each number in turn.
      5. Change each number with the + and - buttons until your display reads 27400 or slightly lower and press EXIT to store it.
      6. You are now in a fast mode for your continuity testing, staying in the diode range.
      7. When you are done with the continuity testing, press RANGE/SETUP until it beeps again, then press STORE to display OFF in the low mode.
      8. Press EXIT to return the meter to its usual state.

    Of course they are better meters out there, Fluke, Agilent and Gossen come to mind. The point is, there are no other meters, loaded with so many features, at that price point. 140$ actually, the last time I checked. If you know of any, I'd be interested to hear. And no, the Brymen and the Agilent don't qualify.

  • @Wytnucls
    @Wytnucls Před 11 lety

    UNI-T 71D has no competition at 170$. 10,000 point internal data logging, AC+DC, included USB cable for data logging, 40,000 count. No other meter does that. The ones you mention, Kiriakos, cost twice as much and don't have much internal logging space, if any at all. Of course, if input protection worries you, buy something else.

    Unfortunately it is not really a 40000 count meter. Just try it on a fine voltage divider like 100 ohm pot on top of a 100kohm resistor connected to say 3.9V ,and you'll see you can't just set any value, jumps over some values. I bet it's full resolution is 16 bits scaled up to +-40k or more. Still, truly unbeatable value.

    It is really a nice meter for the money. but it's a UNI-T. I have quite a bit of UNI-T stuff and it's all pretty good for the money, but they were UNI-T. The significance of that is when you buy UNI-T you need to be aware there will NO (0) support. None. If you have an issue, don't bother to try to get in touch with them. They will NOT respond. Not now, not tomorrow, not ever. For that reason I will never buy any UNI-T branded item that costs more than $50 going forward and will just treat as temporary toy.
    Nice review as usual.

    UT71D buyers saying it's faster than the UT61E on full resolution, BULLSHIT!!!
    One problem i have always had with the UT71X is that after a few weeks they drift very out of spec. Of which wytnucls will disagree with me.
    I did notice the capacitance range was kinda slow compared to my permanent performer ut61e
    And certainly the continuity is very slow ...

  • @Wytnucls
    @Wytnucls Před 11 lety

    What help did you seek? No company will fix your meter from a distance, not even Fluke. You have to send it back to a repair center. UNI-T is actually quite responsive. Just send them an email, you'll see.

    Unbelievable that this meter is about the same price as the Brymen BM867s. Internally the Brymen is so much better build. The only real thing I see that differs in terms of functionality is internal logging, but both support external logging. Internally this meter is unsafe compared to the BM867s.

    Oh shut up, again you and your high horse. Of course there's always a better multimeter for only xxx $ more.
    That only 100$ is almost 100% the cost of this multimeter, on ebay this model starts at $138. And for some people $100 it's a load of money, may even be close to a month's salary.
    Seriously, you always argue something's better. Of course there is, but not at the price it's sold at.
    BRYMEN BM869 is 185 euro + vat, or 250$ + vat, or about $310 here. this uni-t is $138, no vat, on ebay.
