  • Cleaning up the raised bed area and gearing up for Spring. I am excited that I am now able to link items I use here in the description (see below)! We added two new raised beds. Detailed instructions for those at the end of this description for those interested! Thank you for watching! Enjoy! ✨
    So many people have asked about my sunglasses. I have put a direct link in the video. They are sold out in a lot of places and I was unable to find the brown but the link is to the same sunglasses just a different color!
    There is a link for a rake below that is similar but not exact. The exact link for the craftsman one I used is in the video!

    Raised Bed Build:
    Our beds are 8' x 4'
    We purchased 8 - 4"x6"x12' pieces of lumber. You can choose your respective lengths but for the bed dimensions we wanted 4"x6"x12' worked perfect and we didn't have any left over lumber.
    We cut 4' off all 8 pieces of lumber. We then stacked 2 high of the 4' and 8' sections. We counter drilled for the wood screws so they wouldn't sit proud. We then took 10" TimberLok screws to attached the stacked sections. For the 8' sections we used 3 screws and for the 4' sections we used 2. After that, all your sides will be complete. We then counter drilled the outside edges to attach the 4' sections to the 8' sections. You don't have to counter drill but I do it because I like the look of it. Once we counter drilled we then used 4 10" TimerLok screws to attach the 4' sections to the 8' sections.
    Although this is simple these beds are very heavy. You can make lighter weight beds it just depends on your preference and your needs. I chose this lumber because they will last a very long time and the rot will be minimal. Consider natural cedar for growing edible plants.

    Sydney you have a natural eye for design and vision for your continued design, I say that as an interior designer. Believe me, few people have this talent. You see how color and pattern work together as well as the importance of hardscape in design. You are also very good at blending your young modern ideas into your traditional home. That’s what makes a home interesting and exciting. You have achieved this both inside and outside your beautiful home. I can’t wait to see what you’re going to do next!

    Yikes! Lots of negative comments about the proposed Cortland steel fence at the raised bed garden. The awesome thing is, again, Tommy and Sydney have found their way to honor their architecture and infuse their personal preferences into their garden. Yes the proposed fence is modern, a definitive contrast to their home but it is in the back where it is not seen from any other yard, nor passers by. It is only visible to the Dorman's and their guests. The material provides these two, very busy professionals, a maintenance free solution for an entrance fence at their raised bed garden. These people are enthusiastic gardeners so I expect this fence will be a beautifully aged backdrop to whatever landscape they plant on the yard side of the fence. I am confident their vision will unfold over time to the delight of us all. Sigh ... I will say this video has inspired me because, if this material was fabricated into a somewhat modern scaled version of a pickets fence I would have it on order today! ❤

    What I love most about gardening is VARIETY. Variety plants, placement of plants, paths, and hardscape. I love going on garden tours in the spring - such a wonderful way to garner ideas and spur creativity in my own garden and space. That's why I watch a variety of gardening channels - VARIETY. It has been such a joy to see you and Tommy move into a wonderful history home, with an established gardening space, and show the rest of us how wonderful it is to see a transformation, to YOUR vision, YOUR taste, YOUR ideas. It's just absolutely lovely, and it's been a pleasure to come along with you. I always look forward to your videos, thank you for your content. Keep doing YOU.

    I went and read what everyone had to say. Respect both sides. I respect Sydney for leaving the negative comments and not deleting it. I joined this channel after falling in love with Linda and her beautiful Tudor house and even more exquisite garden. I have to admit I was so envious of you for buying and becoming a custodian to something so unique and breathtaking. I even wondered how she could let it go. I mourned it. I was ready to follow your journey and did. Everyone is right this is your house and you have the right to make your own. But you took something that was iconic and breathtaking and wiped it down to there is minimal to no traces of what was there before. I mourn again at the permanent loss. I’m happy that the videos exist of its previous glory. I wish you the best on your journey and your channel but I also wish it was on a fresh or blank slate and not on the complete removal of something that had been built over 30+ years and had become iconic

    Sydney, I'm very disappointed with many comments here. When you buy a home, it becomes your vision, not the previous owners. There is a fine line between constructive criticism and downright hatefulness. All of us do not share the same design esthetic...thankfully. What a boring world that would be! If certain people are so offended by yours, I wish they would keep their opinions to themselves. I appreciate other people's creativity even though it may not be my personal preference. Keep doing what you're doing, breathing new life into that beautiful old home.

    Sydney, I love what you and your husband have done in the front and back yards so far. I do agree with many of the (haters) tho, that a large metal fence you may end up not liking. Maybe I am wrong but it IS expensive and mostly permanent. One of the other commenters suggested a (live) fence with rusted urns at the entrance to go with your rusted edging. I thought that was a great idea! You could make a boxwood fence with perhaps some small low growing flowers peeking out underneath it. And or a Rusted metal Arch with boxwood fence on either side? Either of those ideas would be much softer and less HOT, plus would make a lovely soft entrance to your cutting flower garden. Anyway, you are a smart woman and I know that whatever you decide will end up looking nice. Good luck and keep up the good work! Oh!!! and I just found another You tuber (gardener) who has a rusted Arch in his garden. His is called a Moon Gate..it is pretty neat. His name is Moxie Gardens. If you type that into You tube and then search Moon gate on his channel it will show it...it is in metal and the same Rust color as your edging. :) hugs!

    I’m curious why is it that most American gardens have annual/ perennial gardens. I have an evergreen here in the UK, I find it’s less maintenance and you have a mature and aesthetically pleasing garden all year around, even my bloomers are evergreen. I love these gardens too I’m just generally curious why it seems to be more of a trend in the US?

    • @SydneyDorman
      @SydneyDorman  Před 4 měsíci +2

      I’m not sure about pricing in the UK but evergreens are pretty pricey here, generally. I think that contributes but in regards to this video, the raised beds are strictly cut flowers that are annual in zone 7 that I can only grow in the spring/fall/summer. Growing from seed is cheap so it allows me to grow as annuals without much investment. I think a lot of UK gardens are much more formal than here in the US with more structure from boxwoods and other evergreens. I would be very curious as to the cost of boxwoods there as I know they are a mainstay in UK gardens. Planting a formal garden of boxwoods here in a relatively small spot would cost thousands. Now you have me thinking!

      @jgwood10 Před 4 měsíci +2

      Perennial plants are the way to plant if you want less planting and maintenance. As I age I am planting more perennials and mainly only using annuals in large pots around the house and garden.

  • @anitahadley2871
    @anitahadley2871 Před 4 měsíci +6

    I can see why you’d want to get rid of the picket fence. It doesn’t really go with your clean and more modern feel. Have you considered just using shrubs to create a living fence to give you the different garden rooms look? You could punctuate the entrance with two tall metal planters or columns.

  • @LindaSmith-zq3pk
    @LindaSmith-zq3pk Před 4 měsíci +4

    I usually love your style, but I am not digging the metal fence, which may risk giving the raised bed area a cemetery-type feel (especially in winter). The picket fence has a light and airy feel to it. A bit of whimsical in the garden wouldn’t go amiss, really.

    With all the strong opinions I almost hesitated to ask this practical question. Does the fence absorb heat such that it burns plants near it? Regardless, I am intrigued and look forward to seeing the new fence.

    • @SydneyDorman
      @SydneyDorman  Před 4 měsíci +1

      It will absorb more than wood but dont anticipate that being an issue. There aren't and wont be plants within 3 feet of the fence. :)

    Sorry l have loved everything you have done so far, but a metal fence is so incongruous to your period home. The metal edges on the ground look neat, but a metal fence will dominate the garden and change how the light falls and doesn't go with living plants. Sorry it's just my opinion.

  • @vlink4071
    @vlink4071 Před 4 měsíci +6

    Metal edging and fencing is not appropriate for the house/garden at all. It’s not more modern it’s more farmhouse and the fence will close off part of your garden.

      I love gardens in any form. I use ideas if I love them but I do not judge others taste and choices. Gardens are our summer living rooms. And no one has a replica of someone else’s garden. You see plenty of copy cat gardens driving thru neighborhoods. Those gardens and homes are not worthy of a CZcams page. I have an English style garden at my new home. I had a different garden at my old home. I am always happy to see Sydney’s latest post to see what they are creating.

      I think LV is 25-30 years older than Sydney and Tommy. It's quite normal for young couples to upgrade and
      re- envision what previous generations did. I adored my mother and her garden but mine is completely different. Just as my Mom and I are. I believe this is normal. Did anyone think the Dormans bought this property to be caretakers to LV style? Of course not!

    Thought I missed one of your videos when you started off mentioning the raised beds not being dry enough to paint, but then the second half of today’s video answered my confusion. Regarding the metal fence, why do you even need one there? If you don’t care for the picket fence, I’d just remove it. Definitely wouldn’t want a rusty looking fence in a backyard setting. Out on a ranch type setting, maybe, but definitely not in a small backyard, imo. 🪴💚

    Cindy I don't like to criticize people's Decisions but with that metal fence I think you are making a big mistake that reminds me of a prison or the fences they put around trucking companies there's nothing attractive about that and as far as mixing old with the news that's fine but I think you're going way too far and you should reconsider You have a lot of other Choices Choices Or what is the reason for that fence to be there anyway if you don't like it take it down and open up the space it would look much better
