I get the feeling that this movie really, really wanted to be a live action version of Thunderbirds, even though all the actors are somehow less articulate than marionettes.

Welcome to the evil that is Sandy Frank. He took the FIRST and SIXTH episodes of the Mighty Jack television series and sandwiched them together to make what this...mess...is. I mean....the original 13 episode series wasn't great...but Sandy Frank makes everything ten times worse.
Also I didn't know how on the nose about Spielberg producing The Flintstones AS WELL AS Casper!
One of the producers, Eiji Tsuburaya, is the man behind the special effects for Godzilla. And MST3K covered one of the Godzilla movies where he was visual supervisor.
Eiji Tsuburaya was the Industrial Light & Magic of Japan!
He also was the man behind the original Ultraman!
Joel is the best! One of the best episodes too. This still slaps in 2021. How would I survive Lockdown without you, MST3K?!

You know how Haim Saban took the popular live action Japanese franchise Super Sentai, mixed it with American actors and cheesy acting to create the popular Power Rangers series?
Sandy Frank does the opposite by taking several average Japanese series, dub them with Americans who can't act and edits them so badly that even Coleman Francis would call his films crappy

I feel the same way! The Mike Nelson years are good in their own way, but for me, give me a Joel episode every time!
I also prefer Joel, but Mike was great too, especially in his first season. What brought the Mike era down had more to do with Trace leaving. Without him it wasn't as good anymore. While still good, something was missing.
The Joel hodgson era was the best...still makes me laugh years later
I fulley agree. For along time i didnt watch anything but joel. Then a few older movies made me watch them. But joels super dry voice ...mono toned delivery of everything he says makes it so good.
@@matthewsmith4599 I also appreciate that comparing the Joel and Mike eras, Joel's riffs seem to be a little less about complaining or putting the movie down, and a little more about making the best of things with a wry joke, often formulated by pretending to agree with the movie's (stupid) logic. A more laid back, take things as they come attitude than Mike's crueler humor
Even with Joel & the Bots, this movie is unwatchable

This episode makes a lot of "worst" lists but I really like it and cue it up fairly frequently. I do admit that it's a good episode to fall asleep to, though.

does someone want to explain to me how it can be 7:30AM in Saigon and 7AM in Moscow? this is a 1986 dub, so the only potential reason is Sandy Frank has no concept of how time zones work...

Sandy Frank was notoriously ignorant, dumb and lazy. He took Japanese TV shows and strung completely unrelated episodes together and called it a movie. Worse yet, his dubbing was the laziest attempt ever at a translation. Nothing compares.
For comparison, "Warning from Space" is a movie that was excellently dubbed.

Sandy Frank has to have spent millions on therapy after MST3K. There's no single person that have continuously unloaded both barrels on. I love every one of these shows with SF.
Whenever I watch this episode I tell myself that I'm going to concentrate and try to figure out the actual plot of the movie... I give up every time after about five minutes.
The most memorable parts were the Sandy Frank bits at the beginning and end.

6:44 - When the movie began, I thought it was from the 50s. But the copyright shown is MCMLXXXVI, 1986! When I looked the movie up, it was apparently released in 1968, which would be MCMLXVIII. This is deeply disturbing, and not in a nice way.
I believe the 1986 was the Sandy Frank year. The year ir was dubbed in English and distributed for English audiences.
Such good stuff. I'm glad these shows are on youtube.

A few years back I was fortunate enough to own a beautiful red w white conv. 64 GTO 389 Tri-power. Of course it was a 4speed and I sure wish that I would have kept her. At any rate, GTO'S rule!!! Oops, my comment was directed at ramairgto.

When Joel left I missed him but Mike was so good that I could handle it. When Frank and Trace left, it really hurt. Just my opinion.
Mike's a great host but the host segments took a dive...he used them to showcase his hit-or-miss brand of comedy, and they became less about lampooning the movies on the whole.
Yeah. The riffing was still awesome with Bill, but the show itself lost some of its charm

Man, they're right though. This movie feels like it's four hours long. I had to keep checking the progress bar, I couldn't believe it wasn't finished halfway through!

No joke, this film feels longer than any other one they ever watched, I don't know why but holy God it just won't end; even though literally nothing happens for an hour and a half.
They spend the first half trying to save some dude who randomly becomes their boss, and then the second half obsessing with unmeltable ice and they never explain why the ice matters.
They don't even explain WTF mighty Jack means, in the last half hour 1 of the unrecognizable characters says "activate the mighty Jack." It's something related to their knockoff thunderbirds plane but they just don't even try to explain that. This film is genuinely insane.
It's funny being from Wisconsin and watching this show. So many tiny references. Tommy Bartlett show! LMAO.
