She is vastly underappreciated. Her early stuff and her other band Marriages are great dark music. Kind of like a really dark metalish version of Tori.
YES YES YES Thanks to whoever got you into Emma Ruth Rundle. I love her singing and her peculiar way of playing with fingerstyle and mixing americana with stoner. Her previous band Marriages has some great songs you should check it out as well.
Wow. I wasn't sure what to expect but I loved this song. I would have listened the hell out of this about 10 years ago because it has that same emotional langour as Portishead somehow.
On top of being a great musician, Emma is a beautiful soul. I once gave her one of my ambient live-looping record (she just released one herself) and she wanted to give me her vinyl in return.. and since I don't have a record player, I left with a T-Shirt.. I mean.. who does that ? :) So glad you're doing this. I'm pretty sure it's 100% live and I don't see anything happening that tells other wise. When he does the slide going down motion, the note turn to feedback (on purpose: he's really close to the amp and plays a semi-hollow) so we hear the harmonics, which sounds like separated notes.
@@bnjmnmrtn360"same people who think this is music" meaning Emma's music? Mate, I live for music and she's amazing. I think you need to open your mind to appreciate dark, raw, emotive songwriting. Also you seem to equate liking this kind of music with political correctness which is just the most asinine thing I've ever heard of in my life. Myself and one of the other biggest ERR fans I know both hate political correctness. I think you should remove your head from your ass a bit, lighten up, and learn to enjoy new music man
Everything Emma does and is part of is pure gold. Add to that the sonic wave of reverb and delay from Jay's slide guitar work, the choice of drum textures and bass lines... it's haunting and alluring, dark and moody, a perfect compliment and serves the song so well.
Sooo many layers, and the drum work was awesome and solid the whole way through! Emma's voice is amazing as well! I am definitely going to check out more of her music! ✌️
I became aware of ERR two years ago. She’s unbelievable! A force of nature! She kind of reminds me of Natalie Merchant! It almost looks like the video was uploaded at a slightly slower speed than it is when played!
Saw her play in Sydney Australia last year she was supporting Chelsea Wolfe. She pulled out of the gig prior because she was sick. She performed sick and it was still absolutely flawless.
That would have been my gig in Wellington NZ where she cancelled. She was the main act i wanted to see. Chelsea did a whole 3-hour set though, which was amazing. I was a bit bummed though.
@@matthewcowell I think she didn't play in Melbourne aswell. Chelsea Wolfe had to do an all acoustic set because her one of her band members were sick aswell.
8:34 I think he is doing this drop with his effect pedal "Red Panda Raster" which can do an increasing pit shift up- or down-wards - he explains it in the Rig Rundown from Premier Guitar
Very cool sound! Reminds me of early Swervedriver, and Mazzy Star, and Trinity Sessions-era Cowboy Junkies, and the second half of the Singles Soundtrack version of Smashing Pumpkins’ Drown. Like you, its not a style that I often pursue, however, in those times of melancholy, of which there used to be MANY, and thank God they are less, these days … this is JUST the ticket I need to help me process my thoughts.
I love ERR. I also love that she's a metalhead. That's a Mizmor shirt, and I believe she's also a big fan of Alcest too. Not to mention the album done with Thou a couple years ago.
The drop you describe at 8:46 is probably the result of the residual resonance from an ebow (or possibly the hollowbody feeding back). The note isn't actually fretted, its a slide harmonic. Used a lot by Ben Sharp of Cloudkicker as well for conjuring extramusical aeroplane motifs.
She’s in an open B tuning for her standard scale guitars and open Ab on baritone. She uses loopers, delays and reverbs. It actually lines up pretty well knowing the material :) enjoyed your take
Hey there! I'm a newbie to your channel. I love music! Finding new artists and styles of music feeds my soul. You better believe I'll be digging up more from Emma here. Awesome talent and sound. ❤ Have you guys heard of Porcupine Tree? Another fantastic band to check out. The Incident album is one of my favorites. Rock on new friends! 🎸
Great french fan of Emma (even got a dedicated record when she came here ! she's a very lovely person, quite shy) listen to her early stuff, very textural with red sparrowes and Marriages and of course her solo recordsand collaborations (with Thou for exemple) her greatest song, gives me shivers every time. czcams.com/video/zhXZT1AE3tk/video.html
Things not lining up perfectly can be attributed to the following things, that are just unavoidable when doing live sessions like this: When shooting live sessions like this, you usually do a live take with lots of wide shots. Then you do individual takes with closeups of all the band members. All this is then edited together to look like one performance. So live sessions are actually live takes, but video and audio may not be from the same take. Pair that with video editors that aren‘t necessarily musicians themselves and things may not align perfectly.
Loved this reaction vid, have been following ERR for a while. Would love to see you do one on Baroness - maybe a song like Cold-Blooded Angels or Tourniquet.
Something about her voice and style reminds of the Cranberries. But it’s darker and heavier. I really enjoyed this. It’s always great to discover a new artist
Holy shit! Never thought I'd see Evan Patterson (guitarist) and Todd Cook (bassist) on here. Hung out with them a few times when they were playing in the band Old Baby with Jonathan Glen Wood based out of Louisville. They are some fantastic musicians and they do psychedelic rock fucking right. czcams.com/video/-eFZPJK-xEM/video.html&ab_channel=soulfullofnicotine This was my favorite song by them.
i would love to hear your thoughts on Blessed Persistence by 16 Horsepower. there is a awesone live version online on the channel called Mert. (16 Horsepower - Blessed Persistence (Live) HQ)
I'd really like to hear your thoughts on "Antebellum" by The Human Abstract. Personally I think it's a masterpiece. Even if you don't do a video about it, it's well worth a listen.
Hey Michael, that was pretty cool, but what I was wondering is that I'm only a subscriber on the CZcams channel, do I have a chance to win the PRS gear? Because I would be so happy to win, my amp bit the dust 😭 , I'm a good player but I don't have much $$$ these days (which is okay) but I love playing and I wish I could be in GG, I am working my way back to getting a credit card, and all that so hopefully we can have a chance of winning! 😁🎸❤️
Just my uneducated opinion, but I know what I like and I found myself wanting her vocals more prominent and not easily buried under the waves of (good) noise, but its some ear strain to stay with her vocals which I felt would have benefitting from being more present in the middle of those waves that came and buried her voice. Just my opinion. I like it, but could have liked it more if the mix were a bit different. I assume it was an artistic choice vs unintended mix? But wouldn't have been my 1st choice.
On Engine of Hell, her vocals are very much in the forefront. Granted the music is much more stripped down to just a piano or guitar, so if you want the vocal experience, definitely check that album out.
Her singing style reminds me of Mazzy Star, but her voice is not like Mazzy Stars. That's my O. Personally, I would like to hear more articulation, her voice sounds pretty and I would like to hear her voice more upfront in the song. My preference. I want to hear what she's saying.
I love Emma Ruth Rundle. Her work with Thou (album May Our Chambers Be Full) is some of the best sludge metal ever created. She is supremely talented!
That album is fantastic!
Sludge represent 🤘
been obsessed with it the past three years so yeah it could be one of the best metal collabs ever made
So true
Outside of genres it’s possibly one of the best albums, full stop.
She is vastly underappreciated. Her early stuff and her other band Marriages are great dark music. Kind of like a really dark metalish version of Tori.
I love Emma. She has so much depth and is always reinventing herself, yet remains raw, true and honest.
ERR fan right here! Great pick. She's awesome! And this performance is amazing.
YES YES YES Thanks to whoever got you into Emma Ruth Rundle. I love her singing and her peculiar way of playing with fingerstyle and mixing americana with stoner. Her previous band Marriages has some great songs you should check it out as well.
Emma Ruth Rundle is a force and an amazing live act. Check out her collaboration with Thou for some true catharsis
I second the collab with Thou, specifically The Valley is a crazy song
The vibe is killer and her voice is ASTOUNDING
Wow. I wasn't sure what to expect but I loved this song. I would have listened the hell out of this about 10 years ago because it has that same emotional langour as Portishead somehow.
ooh, I love ERR! Her album Marked For Death is one of fav albums ever.

Yesssss, so happy to see that you finally got around to listening to ERR. She's incredible. "Races" and "Marked For Death" are also epic songs.
E.R.R is an incredible artist who is an incredible guitarist and amazing singer
Hello 90’s. Nice to hear you again.
Love that I discover new & amazing music through This channel every time
Thanks 🎸
I would highly recommend some of her earlier stuff as well. Aokigahara by The Nocturnes is gorgeous. Then there's Marriages, then her solo stuff.
ERR is great!
Really enjoy her project with Thou, very cool stuff.
Sooo many layers, and the drum work was awesome and solid the whole way through! Emma's voice is amazing as well! I am definitely going to check out more of her music! ✌️
Love emma. Wearing a marriages shirt right now! They opened for Deafheaven about a decade ago and I've been hitched to emma's wagon ever since
Big fan of ERR. Great to see you react to her. It would be good to see you react to some of her earlier stuff with Red Sparowes 🙂

I dig this, thanks for posting it, Michael.
Emma Ruth Rundle!!! Yes!
🖤🖤🖤
"Reberb Pit, Dreamscape" I finally found my vibe.
Great vid, love her sound on this performance
You explained this so very well and I’ve seen them live and they are DIRTY 🤘
Sounds like an outtake from The Crow soundtrack. The Cure meets Medicine meets PJ Harvey and Hole, add in a dash of My Bloody Valentine. I dig it!
Idk how else to describe, but the music and her voice give me "The Crow" movie vibes...hope that makes sense to anyone else? Very cool
Emma is a great artist, very interesting break down of this track.
This is one of my favorite performances of hers. They slow down Darkhorse from the album cut a little.
She’s in an open B tuning for her standard scale guitars and open Ab on baritone.
She uses loopers, delays and reverbs. It actually lines up pretty well knowing the material :) enjoyed your take
Love her early work, the albums she did with Thou, and her band Marriages. You may also dig Chelsea Wolfe if you like this.
Awesome!!! I love it!!!

awesome review.....Emma rocks. I subscribed!!!
Emma is great. I know guitar wise she tunes in open tuning dadgad variants and sometimes hangs in a baritone guitar realm. Cool seeing your breakdown

with slide and delay this absolutely will sound live like this man.
Love this!❤ Kinda a cross between 'Til Tuesday & The Cure. "I wanna be happy, but....maybe i am?" Really cool old school v8be.
So glad to see Emma getting more attention!!!
Cool stuff I like it
Something about her voice and style reminds of the Cranberries. But it’s darker and heavier. I really enjoyed this. It’s always great to discover a new artist
I would love to see you listen to Protest the Hero. Insane guitar work.
As an old metalpunk, her sound was country/folk with a black metal / shoegaze base.
She just released new music.
CHECK IT OUT!
Emma is amazing!
Darkhorse is an amazing song
Awesome song. (Had some Maynard James Keenan vibes in it. Maybe Puscifer.) I will be diving into her music.
Her earlier stuff is like this the newer stuff not so much. She had another band called Marriages that is more like this sound.
That little push was totally Radiohead
