During the band’s fall tour supporting critically-praised On Dark Horses, orchestrator guitarist/vocalist Emma Ruth Rundles along with fellow guitarist (and ERR’s husband) Evan Patterson took some time at Nashville’s High Watt to hang with PG’s Chris Kies and go through their onstage gear.
From her days in the post-rock instrumental band Red Sparowes and the psych-metal outfit Marriages, Emma Ruth Rundle has been an ardent user of SGs for their light stature and hearty tones. However, when Guild brought back the T-Bird ST in 2017 one of their employees close to the resurrection felt the guitar would be perfect for Rundle and she’s been using it ever since because of the neck’s flatter radius and she digs the darker-sounding humbuckers (LB-1) that still have a balanced, high-end clarity. She has named the T-Bird “The Cloud”-the only one in her collection with such a designation-and the guitar bounces around various opening tunings that typically start in DADGAD.
Evan Patterson was a longtime user of a beat-up Fender Telecaster (neck pickup only) in his band Young Widows, but while supporting Emma he was after the loudest electric guitar that offered the most acoustic qualities, so he’s welcomed the semi-hollow tones of the Fender Coronado II reissue. On this particular run, this was his only guitar and he used GHS Boomers gauged .011-.056.

Perhaps my claim to fame will be that Emmy Ruth (and Mikki Itzigson) and I were in a band together for 5 minutes, or about 2 or three rehearsals, before she was invited to join the Red Sparrows. She sings like an angel and liked my country/Americanan songs. We had fun while it lasted, the harmonies in that group were spectacular, but it was not to be. :)

Saw her live last year in October in Berlin. I had discovered her a year earlier with her music being super therapeutic and just by chance found out she was playing. Absolutely worth and she sounds amazing live.

It's interesting to see her love for the Jaguar Baritone. I had one but had trouble fitting it into my sound. Found myself using my old Bass VI more for low end. One things for sure, I doubled the money I had into it by selling it once they stopped making them.

I'm normaly not into "modern" guitar music, but she and her music are outstanding. Emma and her band creat an almost epic sound and atmosphere.

This is how Blues music started; self taught individuals just doing what feels right.If you want crazy tunings, research some of the earliest recorded players.Same went for equipment; every pickup and amp combo can get great sounds, it just takes patience to find them.Like seeing unique rigs, and even better if it's a woman; they can often bring an element otherwise missing.Micro Amp- makes it all taste good.

What song is she playing?
Its a whole different world for those who play pro rather than homeboy hobby. Most people think a sound is a sound, just hit the right note. If only... but no, every sound has its own formula. Its like going to the paint store for blue paint, only to find there are 30 different shades/textures to choose from. And just how does one learn all the electronics/effects? They don't teach that in band class. I'm amazed the #1 cause of musician deaths isn't from electrocution or exploding equipment shrapnel. And then try doing all this rigging/setup while slightly inebriated? Keep the physics class coming; I'm hoping to actually learn how to do just a little of this some day. Of course, I'd hafta sell my house to afford all this gear I didn't even know I needed.
learn??? you learn by doing. this is music everyone starts as a hobbiest, you just figure it out as you go by what sounds good to you and what works live as part of the band, thats how she and everyone does it try stuff over time trial and error. And gear that gives those sounds is cheap these days, a couple cheap pedals...reverb + delay boom done $100. Approach with zen...relax and let it happen

These guys always seem so unprepared for their interviews. "I see you have a guitar here" "How does that make you feel" "have you always used your fingers when playing guitar" lmao.
Notice how the artists are always somewhat uncomfortable by the awkward questions and follow up questions, especially. There's always such a weird flow of conversation. They need that one girl back, she at least wasn't so socially awkward

I’m glad someone else thinks picks feel weird. I never have and probably never will use a pick.
Picks are useful for some techniques and they definitely add clarity on lower tuning. I use both depending on the situation but I get why someone would prefer fingerstyle or Andy Martin style playing
