    CORRECTION: When I mention compatibility with memory cards...I meant to say "Cfast Express TYPE B"***

    Ah Hidden Valley Park! And Superior Dairy. And so many other familiar places!
    Nice review, Josh! I'm still not ready to bite the bullet on the Komodo X, but this is making me want to work extra hard toward it.

      It's a great camera! Thanks for watching, Matt!

    The reason it crops is because its RAW and when you drop resolution you have to crop. The R5C will also crop if you want to shoot raw at a lower resolution then 8K. This is achieved by shooting in s35 mode which gives you 6k raw. Hope this helps.

    • @remscape
      @remscape  Před 8 měsíci

      Ah interesting...I didn't know that. The R5C only shoots raw in 8K so this makes a lot of sense. Thanks for sharing!

    The reason the camera crops when using high frame rates is likely due to the processor's inability to resample quickly enough from a larger area of the sensor. Never mind - a great sounding bit of kit, and a fun and informative video. Thank you!

      @remscape  Před 8 měsíci

      I should really look into it so I sound more like I know what I'm talking about. That does make sense though.
      Thanks for watching!

      Josh - you absolutely do know what you're talking about, and your fun vignettes (camera love and camera envy) make for great entertainment. Your non-cropping, high frame rate Canon will either be resampling from the large sensor (good) or line / pixel skipping (not good). Resampling takes big CPU cycles but is easier for the Canon because of the lower colour bit depth (10-bit as opposed to the RED's 16-bit in raw). RED specialise in capturing maximum data - a great approach (with some small caveats ...) This camera looks exceptional and your video is excellent. All the best.

      Thank you so much for the kind and encouraging words, @@gideonfraser6570! This is only my second gear-review video and I wasn't sure how the finished result would turn out. You're greatly appreciated!

    I was thinking about getting the Komodo X ( a great camera btw) and then the Sony Burano was announced. I know there is a $15,000 price difference, but I'm already immersed into the Sony ecosystem so it's looking tempting.

    • @remscape
      @remscape  Před 9 měsíci

      Oh man the last Sony camera I had was the Sony EX3! The Burano does look pretty incredible but man I continue to have so much fun with the Komodo-X and I'm loving the Red ecosystem. I've been able to pivot just fine with the slow start-up time and the poor auto focus but one thing I didn't mention at all in my review is how much the camera struggles in low light compared to other cine cameras (something I'm sure the Burano would scoff at). It's a tough choice but if you're already invested in the Sony ecosystem it seems like an easy one. Thanks for watching!

    All the hype around Komodo-x seems more like a case of 'overprice branding over actual technical improvement'.

    • @remscape
      @remscape  Před 9 měsíci

      I suppose every camera of this caliber has a certain amount of hype. If I was a Komodo owner I'm not sure I would find the upgrade worth it but the bump in dynamic range and especially the additional frame rates were worth the extra investment when deciding on the Komodo or the Komodo X. Thanks for commenting!

    • @jaspinderbabbu959
      @jaspinderbabbu959 Před 5 měsíci

      Yeah, but 5000 US dollars more only for little bit higher dynamic range and frame rates, I think its too much money 😔🙄

    The only way to go from 6K to 4K is either to subsample / pixel-bin or crop. It's not RAW if you're pixel-binning, because you're "skipping" pixels which is the opposite of RAW (which is grabbing everything from every pixel)? I had to do research and think long and hard about this myself in order to understand the difference. 🙂

    The Komodo X only has a single card slot, right? How nervous do you get with only one card slot? I know you have to get RED approved cards, but since having a camera with redundant slots for the last ten years, I think that would freak me out a bit!

    • @Journeywiththehintis
      @Journeywiththehintis Před 9 měsíci +2

      Arri does have one too, No?

    • @remscape
      @remscape  Před 9 měsíci

      It does have a single card slot. I should've mentioned it but I'm just so used to using a single card slot (even with my Canon cameras) it didn't even occur to me. There's wisdom in using redundant slots but I've just never done it and thankfully have never had a card fail me. I think a single card slot is typical for cameras of this caliber/price range.

    • @remscape
      @remscape  Před 9 měsíci

      I believe they use just one as well

    • @kylelowe
      @kylelowe Před 9 měsíci +1

      True, pretty much all RED cameras and Arri cameras have only one card slot. That said, big productions that utilize these tools will often have a budget for a dedicated person to make sure data is properly backed up and both brands have strict media requirements to use with their cameras.
      That said, I run really small productions and I know Joshua does sometimes too, so I just want to know how he feels about the lack of the safety net of immediate redundant data back up.

    • @remscape
      @remscape  Před 9 měsíci +1

      @@kylelowe Call it naivety but it just has never been a big concern of mine. Mind you...I always invest in the most reliable brands of memory cards, match a card to one device exclusively, never keep a card past a certain duration and immediately do backups before leaving (most) productions. In eighteen years that process hasn't failed me. There's always a first thought and a dual card slot certainly adds security.

    Dude - welcome to 1998. Why are you upset that the X works with CF Express B cards? and why did you have Cfast cards? Very generic content.

    • @remscape
      @remscape  Před 9 měsíci

      ...I never said I was upset. Actually good catch! I misspoke. I should've said "type B". I reference the Canon R5C several times which takes CF Express type B cards not Cfast cards. Thanks for the feedback ;)
