    My son graduated from MMI in 2015. Sadly we lost him in 2017. You remind me of him. I enjoy your videos. glad your ok and the bike is now fixed. My son layed a bike down, a customers he was test riding, when he hit black ice. Luckily the only damage was cosmetic.
    Someday I'll tell you about the dead raccoon he rode over, not by choice either.

    John thanks for sharing the insurance information. I'm a body man and own my own shop. I get them type of questions all the time. Our Harley Davidson dealerships is bought 40 plus more away. I try my best to get any rider with a new bike to take it to there dealer for repairs... But work on mostly older paid for bikes. I admit that I have a larger deductable on my bikes because of there age and I'm gonna fix them anyway. I have thought in the past I have had 2 insurance clams in the past 50 years. Once in the late 70s and the last was memorial day when I went deer hunting coming back from the Springfield mile race. My 2005 ultra classic took a hit but it also took care of me. I didn't get hurt but killed that freaking deer. It bent the crash bar and bracket. I had thought about putting a stronger bar bracket on the bike like you showed in the video . Decided not to only because if it took a hit like that again I was afraid that it would bend the frame. Rather replace the bracket than the frame. Who knows but I had rather not find out. LOL Thanks for your video's John ...

    John you have the same year and bike my son has. Identical and he absolutely loves it. Not to pour salt on a open wound, literally. My son has also crashed his bike. He was also OK and he was also thankful for the highway bars.

    It depends on what insurance you have and what you're driving record is but filing a claim can double your rates and some insurance companies won't even insure you if you've filed a claim. It's definitely pays to do your research before filing....

    Glad you posted about the derby cover. I have a 2019 electric glide standard 107 engine and I just bought my wife a 2018 heritage classic with the 114. Yeah she has the bigger motor, but she is constantly complaining about that covered burning her leg. I had noticed mine was nearer but didn’t know if it was just the 107 to 114. I guess now I’ll have to upgrade her to a new derby cover.

    Hey John! Yep in 16 wrecked my new at the time my new Heritage.
    The highway bar bent that flimse tab and had to replace the frame.
    The frame came from H-D with the same serial numbers just like something never happened. That crash with a few other parts brought very close to total. Labor alone was insane!

We were hit at a stoplight by a woman turning while texting on 10/6 and our '18 Heritage (Marilyn) has been at the dealer since the 2nd week of October and still has not had wrench turned on her. "Waiting on parts" because of some "computer glitch at HD in Milwaukee that prevented shipping ... " Ugh!!!

    I’ve dealt with insurance companies for years, and rarely have anything good to say about them, but when a severe storm came up last year and turned my ‘15 Wide Glide upside down, Flow took care of me! I live in a townhouse, and had her out front covered which I think acted like a sail! 😳 The adjuster came to my house two days later, wrote down every scratch, the fork was a little wack, had a flatbed pick her up (The closest Dealership is an hour away) and they replaced everything, ($3800) including the flamed tank ... which caused most of the delay or it would have been done in a week, and 3weeks later, I paid my $250 deductible and rode her home! I think that I’ve kept her stock helped , and with 11,500 miles on her that dealership has done (4) 5000 mile services, tires, and brakes! Loyalty counts!

    Awesome, looks great. You got that fixed up quick! (I'm sure a bigger headache than youtube made it seem.) But still. It's fantastic the paint never got hit. Hey John in your video you talked a little bit about obsolete parts. Just to elaborate on that to help others in this kind is situation. If the parts do come back obsolete the best people to talk to would be the parts department in the Harley Dealership. They can help find aftermarket parts and accessories using either the Fat book, or the Old book by Drag Specialties, or other companies to get comparable OEM products for their bike.

    Hey John. I know it's off topic but i have a question. Iv'e seen a couple of you tube videos that suggest that the M8 and to a lesser degree the Twin cam motors have a problem with too much pressure in the crankcase and some sort of crankcase vent kit should be fitted to fix this. Is this a problem you have come across or is it bs. Love your vlogs by the way.

    • @paulhd9535
      @paulhd9535 Před 4 lety

      John already made a video on the topic. I had the issue your referring to on a 2019 FLHTK. The trans oil was seriously going down when checked with dipstick over about 500 miles. It would end up on the other side where the derby cover is and flood that compartment. Brought the issue to the dealer. They have a kit that resolves the issue but beware it’s not ALL bikes that have the issue, it’s not one model, it’s really a lottery, hence no recall. Dealer did the fix on warranty and I have had no similar issue at all in past 2000 miles since fix. Just don’t keep adding trans oil and hope for the best. And for those who will criticize negatively about this issue, remember, it would not be a real Harley if it did leak or have oil issues LOL!!!!

    • @slothysi
      @slothysi Před 4 lety

      @@paulhd9535 Thanks Paul. I actually don't have any issues with my bike (2012 Fat Bob) leaking oil but i was just curious really as i had heard of this problem from some people. Mine does go through a little bit of oil between services but i think that's fairly normal for a big air cooled motor, especially an older one like mine. Plus i live in Australia and it can get pretty hot here.

    • @danielgaskell5490
      @danielgaskell5490 Před 4 lety +1

      A good rule of thumb for any vehicle is 10 years old or older... Some Harley parts can go back years and years tho. When you see the "-12" or "-15" in some of the part numbers (like 94281-04), that's the model year it came out.

Quick question about the tab on the older models that gets bent when the engine guard hits something. The engine guard on my 2009 Fatboy knicked something and got bent, but not too much. We were able to get it back into shape. But the tab got bent as well. Is it dangerous to ride with it like that. Although the rest if the frame looks ok. Dare say most insured bikes are just totaled by the insurance company; thinking they would just rather write a check and be done with it (labor, parts, etc). Would like to see a statistic as to bikes fixes vs totaled. Plus I believe the big companies look at bikes as a small part of their business and there are not a whole of of claims anyway. 6 thumbs down, seriously? Giving John a thumbs down would be like dissing Santa...

    • @TheHarleyTech
      @TheHarleyTech  Před 4 lety +1

      Very few are totaled on my end. It’s just a percentage of value vs cost to repair. The older the bike, the lower the value.

    • @rosemaryus-ct6151
      @rosemaryus-ct6151 Před 4 lety

      yeah what john said; insurance companies typically have a policy to 'total' a vehicle when the repair is more than a certain percentage of the vehicle's value; when they total a bike they can then take it and sell it [probably for parts] and offset the cost of the claim on their end.

    Ik this is late but i just hit a curb on my sportster and fell off. The bike slid on the left. Only damage i see is the clutch handle is wonky, the gear shifter peg thing is broke off and only shifts into first an neutral, and the rear tailight is bent and busted out. Other than that, theres a minor dent on the gas tank and the foot peg is kinda broke. No major damage i dont think, but besides the tank would it even be worth it to file an insurance claim if i just wanted the gear shift peg, clutch handle, and rear tailight replaced? I can replace a mirror and footpeg myself. If its anywhere near 3k they are just gonna total my bike out and my insurance would probably drop me bc i had someone hit me and run away 10 months ago.
    Edit: its a 21 sportster btw. Dont know if the frame is bent but I personally dont think it is. Hopefully the front forks are fine too

    I agree on the insurance thing . Why pay for something and scared to use it ? Use that stuff !it's why you pay those rates !

    Bent the frame on my 09 Softail Classic. Bike totaled. I miss that baby to this day. My rates went up a whole $70 dollars a year. I live in upstate ny so rates are cheap up there. We don’t ride year around and less traffic.

    Bike was left brand new Sir! Quick question Max. I have the same bike and I have been trying to replace the tank bib but cannot find the way to remove it even removing both screws that seem to hold on place the dash. What am I missing? Thank you and stay safe.

    Hey John! I always wait for your videos and they are especially interesting to me as I have the same bike in the same color even. Unrelated question, At 14k miles I need to replace my rear tire for the second time. I check the air pressure every time I ride and set it at 40psi for the rear. I never have a passenger, but at 290lbs I am a big guy. I do have the Harley Tallboy seat on the bike. The tire wear on the rear is even and tight in the middle and, while we do ride fast and in the Florida heat, I'm not doing burnouts or anything like that. It just seems like I should be getting mileage out of that rear tire. Some have suggested I run a lower air pressure to distribute the weight across more surface area like 37 psi. The front tire is still the original and will probably need replacing soon but can probably go close to 20k miles. Any thoughts? FYI I'm using the exact Harley branded Dunlop tire that comes on the bike. This time, I'm going to try and change the tire myself. Do I need a tube with an offset valve? I'm sure you get bombarded with questions so any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi #John. One question I have is, what happens with the damaged parts? Do you get to keep them? Or do they belong to the Insurance company?
    Reason I ask for example is, your primary cover is only scratched and therefore is still in good working order and can be used again without a problem and therefore one can use it as a spare or can sell it.
    I know that in my neck of the woods all damaged parts are owned by the Insurance company.

    Hey John, hope flmm goes well. Another year i cant go cause of my travel schedule. Completely off the repair subject. I noticed when you took off the primary cover that it seems the rear primary cover has the shifter hole for mid controls. Is this correct? Reason i ask is that i want to put the controls from a street bob on my18 Fat bob. I dont know if i need to change the rear primary as well.

    Question ... so when harley checks your bike do they do the whole bike? ie the frame or bars, and how do they check that? I’m asking cause I finally laid my 2019 CVO Road Glide down ... I know how you feel bro lol. But I can’t wait to get her back and ride again! Oh and why is it that one dealership will tell you “XX” amount of time and another dealership can do it in lesser time?
