A softtail standard “2001” was my first Harley because of the price and I loved that bike. Right up to when a hit a dog on the interstate and totaled it in 2007. I have many great memories of it. Harley needs this type of bike for people wanting their first one. Then again I love all the Harley’s I’ve had sense then but the standard give me my start.
Just got a 2021 Softail Standard. I love the shit out of it. I plan on putting bags on it, a highway bar, Memphis shades fairing, sissy bar, and either rear seat or luggage rack. Even without all of that I love the barebones look of it. It was exactly what I was after. This was the thing I didn't like about it too. Should have been more differentiated from Street Bob. I'm also not a fan of the digital clamp speedo, would rather have seen a dash and "analog" style speedo. Especially since I think I saw some blurb about "old school customization".
Also wish it was forward controls rather than mid. Thought the whole point of FXST/FXSTC was to get that bobbed chopper look. This just doesn't have that despite the polished bits instead of being totally blacked out everywhere.
My softail was a blank canvas when I bought it and now with my understanding of the additional items that I wanted. My softail is absolutely amazing and perfect!!!! For me!!! Exactly what I wanted! So awsome!!! I love Harley!!!!
Growing up in the 80s, this bike looks like the HD that I remember - Chrome and spokes. Love it. I'd change the Pipes to V&H, Air Cleaner, to polished alum, and hopefully you can still get a chrome rear fender brace, Pearl White tank and fenders. And lastly, a real speedo. @@PAULY-P Yeah, I agree. I like the street bob, but I'm on the fence about getting one because of the limited tank capacity. I'd get a lowrider, but hate the graphics on it and it also has too much chrome. Hard to get a simple bike that can do some good miles between gas stops it seems.
@@caffeine_strings5698 Try aiming for the wider forks over the narrow ones. You'll be amazed how much better the stability is. Like the WideGlide, FatBoy, Fatbob, Deluxe, etc. Deluxe has chrome though.... The Slim is like the StreetBob but with the wider front end and partially blacked out. Id go for that over StreetBob and it has the 5 gallon tank!! 130 front tire and 150 rear. Good luck!
@@PAULY-P I really want a M8 though. And I'm gonna have to go for one of the more "modestly" priced ones. Been saving up alot, but I'm not a big earner.
@@caffeine_strings5698 You'll have to shop around. I have a place near me called "Road Track & Trail and they have a 16' Blacked out Fatboy for only 8 or 9k with low miles. Nothing wrong with the M8s except the scissor gear sound they make. Sound more jap to me. The frames are 65% for stiff and have the rear mono shock and are overall a tad lighter than the twin cams. I just thought you would like the Slim if you like the streetbob. Otherwise get a nice 103 twin cam. They look good and have enough power. Also is a proven motor and sound better than the M8s. The 103 will be better for your wallet. Heck, i picked up an 09' StreetGlide last yr for $6800 out the door and only 29k miles. It does just fine for me. I whip it around as easily as my softails. Good luck on your search.
well i have a 2003 heritage softail classic with the power commander i bought the bike from the originalowner with 27,414 miles on it for $7900, it has been garage kept since day one. the guy took real good care of it. the bike runs great and rides just as great. got forward controlls with 16 inch apes with 3 inch risers. and thunderhead 2 into 1 ehaust. with all the chrome extras. i love the bike and the way it handles. and sounds not to mention the looks and compliments... gladi bought the bike
This "entry level" Harley is a good idea. Just need to get younger people into the game. Great platform for also breaking in the younger crowd in the ways of customization to make a bike their own. Dodge had a thing awhile back where you built your vehicle online and they shipped it to the legal middleman where you could pay more. Neat concept.
Richard Alvis I agree that it’s a good idea ... but the price needs to be lower ... I’m not a Harley hater by any means but I was just at a “motorcycle mall” looking around and it’s amazing what you can get for $13,000 outside of Harley ... Their big twin entry level bike needs to be under $12,000 to work in brining in the new younger crowd ...
Stage 1 kit with heavy breather and Vance & Hines Pipes, saddle man renegade solo seat, Burleigh bars highball 16 inch, remove rear brake light , fit blinker / brake light kit. Sweet bar hopper in Australia for around $25k . Thanks Harley
Interesting price point. In Canada it’s $15,499 + Freight/PDI + Tax = $18,300 out the door price. This is way to expensive for a bike with nothing on it. For this price I can buy almost any bike from any other manufacturer and it will come loaded with everything (Traction control, Cornering ABS, driving modes, Slipper clutch to name a few things and a longer base warranty). Great idea for the bike, but again they missed the boat on pricing. It should have been $10,000 out the door. Love your videos. Ride safe.
I got an Electra-glide standard the day after it came out. I paid under 16K for it. They sold 2 of them that day. Went back to the dealership about 3 months later (it's 150 miles away) and they had 30 of them in the showroom. Apparently they are selling. It has the security system and cruise. I don't need a radio. Great bike.
This will probably cannibalize the Sportster, to those that are on the fence/new rider with a bike they’re gonna trade in anyway, and they”ll just get this softtail. 🤷♂️
This bike is what defines the word "cruiser". The style is so minimalist and that's what a cruiser should be. The chrome finish on the rims and handlebars and some other parts make it more attractive. I think the only difference between the street bob is that the street bob has an optional abs, if I'm not mistaken. ABS is important.
I like it just the way it is. I wouldn't sink a dime further into it. I'd pay it off as fast as possible and enjoy the hell out of riding it everywhere. (And I'd take some of the money I've saved and do the adult thing, like paying off a few of my other bills). Your videos really are some of the best John. Thanks.
I'd fix it to fit me. I'd take a grinder lightly to those fins to get that highlight back. I don't like the purely black jugs. Tubeless conversion of those rims. Cobra Neighborhater Exhaust. Saddlemen Tuck and Roll Step Up seat. Find a good chrome air intake. Swap the 5inch headlamp for the Softail Slim 7inch housing and put that new Adaptive LED headlamp in it.
I just put a set of the neighbor haters on my softail standard along with a quick release windshield and a 2 up seat and saddle bags , I love it but I think I want the single seat back . Lol
Öhlins suspension right away, stage 1 tuner and 2-1 exhaust, T-bars, saddlemen seat, new lights all around, powder coat wheels, chop rear fender, fairing, MX pegs, eliminate chrome as much as possible.
Got one back in March. Loving this bike! Really fun through the twisties! So much more so than my street glide. I'll save that for my long distance rides. Anyway, first thing that had to GO on the Softail was the "dog bowl" air filter. Also needed a tad bit wider seat for my lady hips. But overall, a great addition to our stable.
I also have a 2003 softail standard injected. Just got done rebuilding the engine. Went up to 98ci, andrews 37b, port polished and cc the heads down to 72. CF pistons 9.5 to 1. Power commander, Baker dd6. Hydraulic clutch . Etc etc etc. Very quick and very fast. But most of all, VERY HAPPY
Super bike. Got a 2020 couple days ago with 100 miles on it. Probably saved a buck or two buying from owner (more like 7-8K) over dealer. Fwd controls went on yesterday, took 2 hours but my 62 y/o knees love them. Slipons are in the mail. S&S gloss black teardrop is next, have to buy another tuner for this one guess.
Glad to see you back John. First of all from a women standard my first bike was a street 750 I loved the bike it was a great starter bike but it had the trade-in incentive and I ended up trading it in on a 2020 heritage classic 107 that by the way has chrome spoke rims. I think again from a woman’s viewpoint the sportsters for women are not always a great pic for the shorter woman I was going to get a sportster but It was to tall and it cost too much to have it lowered and the street 750 fit me very well. Then when I went in to see what I could get for my trade-in I had my heart set on the white deluxe but I sat on all the bikes even the street glide standard the Road King, deluxe and the heritage I know I like the bagger or the classier look so I didn’t really look at the slims or the street Bob’s or the fat boys that much. After my whole day of shopping I fell in love with the heritage I am a girl that likes chrome so I ended up getting the 107 I’m not into a lot of power so I got the 107 with the chrome💗 I think this softail standard will be a great first bike for women that necessarily don’t like the top-heavy sportster or the street 750 that they don’t like the looks of. I think I would’ve gone for that bike and looked at it in my beginning shopping days for a Harley if softail standard was available I might’ve went that route looks like a nice bike. Just this woman’s point of view. Thanks for all you do

Dual disc fork lowers, mag wheels, a tall riser setup with a low bend bar, upgrade the cam, 90 elbow intake and 2 into 1 pipe. The plate bracket would get tossed in the can IMMEDIATELY, possibly a 2 up seat for the kiddos, LED headlight. Lastly a detachable sissy bar and upgrade the rear shock

Needs a 5 gallon or more. Anything less is a sportster tank.
@@caffeine_strings5698
Try aiming for the wider forks over the narrow ones.
@@caffeine_strings5698
You'll have to shop around.
Oooo. I can see a test ride coming. Top stuff Mr Maxwell...
Great Vid Brother John
Change out the tank looks like the streetbob tank when they changed it it just doesn’t look good in my opinion
It actually the breakout tank
Well, either of you guys are wrong. Unless it’s the softail standard tank...
@@TheHarleyTech you are correct sir
HD wtf have u done to the softail image?
KostaAtlas replaced it with the dynas image. Like photoshop for middle schoolers.
All I took away was your job is to ride different motorcycles back and forth . AWESOME 😎
Finally one I like , cant wait,to get home and get mine
I want it!! Needs forward controls and a mustang seat.
thats what they want fool
I wanna see a CVO Road Glide Special Standard for under 25k.
Lol.
S Defiel I wanna see free Twinkies at Harley Davidson dealerships
Cvos are worth every penny they are very nice...
@@dennism103 Yes, they are _very_ nice, but one problem ... you can't customize them. :0
well i have a 2003 heritage softail classic with the power commander i bought the bike from the originalowner with 27,414 miles on it for $7900, it has been garage kept since day one. the guy took real good care of it. the bike runs great and rides just as great. got forward controlls with 16 inch apes with 3 inch risers. and thunderhead 2 into 1 ehaust. with all the chrome extras. i love the bike and the way it handles. and sounds not to mention the looks and compliments... gladi bought the bike
Glad to see they are listening, I liked the Electra Glide Standard.
Good analysis man
Hate that tank
this is the video I was waiting for
Used that bike comparison last night. It is very helpful
Prices on the new backers are Ludacris you can buy a brand new car AC power everything cheaper than a new Harley bagger
If you guys ever need another rider to help with these fill ups, I volunteer my services. 😂
Stage 1 kit with heavy breather and Vance & Hines Pipes, saddle man renegade solo seat, Burleigh bars highball 16 inch, remove rear brake light , fit blinker / brake light kit. Sweet bar hopper in Australia for around $25k . Thanks Harley
Been wanting a Harley for about 5 years now. I think this may be the one! Love the look of it, and the price.
It's hard for me to believe that they are calling it a Softail standard.
Standard sounds better than Basic.
HD has lost touch.
A 5 gallon tank ! That's the only thing keeping me from, buying a Street Bob, Fat Bob or now......Softail Standard .
Jeremee Gartner I agree. When the Dyna went away, the larger has tank went away as well. A flipping 3.5 gal tank ? ( I think ). What gives ?
It's 3.5. I have a fxbb and I can agree. It needs a bigger tank, if just for esthetics alone
@@Paniconthenet I also have an FXBB, goes 150 miles before reserve, that's plenty.
@@stephenfleming7056 mine's is stage 2 and I get about a hundred miles to a tank... I'm also always in the throttle. But mainly it would look bettef
Stephen Fleming yeah I have a ‘19 fxbb and the tank is plenty big
I was thinking something similar; it's like a Sportster Plus
Dave Beals
I’m sure Harley “Hopes” this happens , since the Sportster will prob get replaced by the new water cooled Custom bike coming soon.
@@elithegreat6463 At the least, it would allow the MoCo to skinny down the Sportster line.
Looks like a Street Bob not a Standard.
Right?! They need to bring back those solid mag rear wheels and traditional gas tanks!
@@timonstettler8403 Absolutely! and the rear fender.
Nice adjustment to a softail, wouldn't be a bad lil scooter for around town or quick runs...🤙nice video man subscribed cant wait for more
Dude. Cause of you. I just purchased mine. Thanks for the review
It's ugly. Looks nothing like the old Softail Standard. It has a Dyna Lowrider rear fender and an ugly gas tank.
Lol
Just bought one of these today, plan on changing the primary cover to black and a new exhaust system other than that I’m more than happy with it
Öhlins suspension right away, stage 1 tuner and 2-1 exhaust, T-bars, saddlemen seat, new lights all around, powder coat wheels, chop rear fender, fairing, MX pegs, eliminate chrome as much as possible.
I just bought my 2020 street bob February 15 loving my street Bob
I love you for this!!! Thank you sir
I have a 2003 anniversary edition standard and I love it I think it be a good everyday day bike and a good start out bike for a new rider
Thanks for all you do
I have to 2018 street Bob blacked out love mine took off the tank emblems and USB box under tank and add my touch on it and for my longer rides have the The standard touring bike and road king great videos keep up the great work
Dual disc fork lowers, mag wheels, a tall riser setup with a low bend bar, upgrade the cam, 90 elbow intake and 2 into 1 pipe. The plate bracket would get tossed in the can IMMEDIATELY, possibly a 2 up seat for the kiddos, LED headlight. Lastly a detachable sissy bar and upgrade the rear shock
I rocked a street 750 for 3 years and miss it a little but love my fxbb
My first Harley was a 2007 FXSTC Softail Standard Custom. This new standard looks smaller (wheelbase wise), but it's nice to see a bike like this from Harley again. Now if only it had the same tank and rear fender as the old FXST.
