I always shoot in apurture priority AV or shutterspeed priority TV for fast moving stuff. learning in manual mode us a goid tip, but if you are out and about, there is not much time to dial everything in. Specially if you photograph animals or vehicles

I get round that by setting up 3 custom profiles. 1 for landscape, 1 for animals and 1 for people. If I need to change settings, I pick the closest custom profile and amend from there. I do the same on the video settings. It has really helped a lot!

I once was part of a Facebook group and a wonan was trying to figure out what she liked best in photography, but she was looking for a camera. So people were telling her to get expensive cameras with lenses, and I just told her to try out with the camera on her phone. I got a lot of hate for that, from some "professional" photographers, who told me, that that was the worst idea ever, and that she needed to try out with an expensive camera. I did not stay long in this group. 😂

      🤣🤣🤣🤣
There’s nothing wrong with using a phone, especially if you don’t know what you ultimately want to shoot!
I personally don’t like shooting with them but it’s not because of the pretentious ’they are not real cameras’ brigade, it’s because the sense of immersion is not there for me. They don’t sit well in the hand ergonomically and it just takes me out of the moment. I know you can get handles and rigs etc but it’s just not my bag!
I can imagine the responses you got!!!🤣🤣🤣

@@davidmuirphotography exactly. I even showed them that people actually win awards with camera phones. I photograph a shitload with my phone and Canon EOS R10 with 18-150mm lens.
Been photographing for a few decades now

Where are you based Johnny and how are you finding the R10?

    • @JohnnyBoy-mt1lj

@@davidmuirphotography I live in the Netherlands. I really enjoy the R10. Never had a full frame camera, so not missing that. Was looking at the R7 also at that time but that was a bit too expensive. Previous cameras are M5, 100d, 350, so I'm in the Canon team 😆 The menus are simple to navigate and the quality is good.
Love the lens. But its not water sealed, which almost messed up my 100d, which has the same issue.

@@JohnnyBoy-mt1lj you have a few years experience on me. I started with a Canon M50 after some bad advice (ditched it after 4 months). Went all in on R5 and that was my first camera truly. I loved it and as you say, the menus were intuitive. It’s forced me to learn quickly and I wouldn’t change that for the world.
      I blew a RIDICULOUS amount of money on lenses. I’ve had a 14-35, 24-70, 70 - 200, 50mm prime, 50mm nifty fifty, Sigma 150 - 600 and a 100-500!!!
I got rid of some to afford others and now have RF 15-35 2.8, RF 24-70 2.8 and the RF 100-500. I’m really happy with that and only have a 70-100 gap which I can live with.
It’s fair to say I am also in the Canon family!!!🤣🤣🤣

Wish someone had told me to just go straight into the manual setting. Would have learnt much quicker.
Same with capturing in RAW. So much miss information at times.
Definitely invest in a tripod. I got a cheap one and it's such a mistake as well as a waste of money
I'm just really getting going with editing. So I definitely need to practice more. 😅

@@davidmuirphotography Done a bit with my phones mostly.
Got my camera about 3 years ago and really didn’t do much with it until the last four or five months
Struggled really to get away from the dependence on intelligent auto.
Think it was lack of confidence to use manual setting.
Was what someone else said a while back about conquering confidence for me to think I will force myself to do just manual setting. Really best thing I did as I am really enjoying my camera now.
Hopefully all my trial and error will come good. I’m already starting to see my experience starting to develop and if I start planning compositions properly. I think I will start to get photos I can be proud of
Learning to edit is helping as well because I can see my photos properly on a larger screen
Just wished I had seen advice like yours earlier
Just got to keep going out and using the camera

      That’s an outstanding reply!
I was definitely the same when I started. Someone told me to get a smaller, easier to use camera as they would be easier to learn. I bought a Canon M50 and immediately hated it. £750 down the drain! I then decided I wanted a Canon R5 which was £5k at the time and everyone said I was mad because it was too expensive, too difficult to use and I was too inexperienced. It was literally the best decision I ever made. I’ve always believed that you get the very best you can afford and then that way, you can never blame the gear, just the guy using it!
I started off by shooting everything, wildlife, street, landscape, candid and portraits. I look back at them now and they are legit terrible but I always smile when I look at them because each one, to me, is a lesson I learned.
I am now in love with video production and it is much the same thing. I didn’t know what I was doing a year ago and I’ve had soo much more to learn but it has been exciting and ridiculous satisfying to see even a little progress.
As with everything in life, you just have to stick at it because repetition is the Mother of skill!!!🤗🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

      @davidmuirphotography Yep I got a Canon M50 as well 😂
I still have it and may get some use from it if I want to VLog or something.
The DJI Osmo is a bit out of my price range for now. Something to save up for.
I was quite proud this past Christmas. My mum and Dad took some of my photos I sent them or put on Instagram. They made a calendar for me as a present.
Average smartphone photos at best. But photos I took and have meaning to me that I can relate to.
Seeing those has inspired me a bit as well as they like them as well.

That’s an incredible thing that they did for you!! I have yet to make a calendar but I think 2025 will be the year. Need to start now though as I know nothing about scaling it up to bigger numbers!
You will never forget they did that, especially if it motivates you to get out for the rest of your life!🤗🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
