  • Here's a little video of me fixing a minor speed issue with an Akai record player, and then giving it a good clean and getting it ready for whomever will use it next.

    Brilliant video. I used G3 car scratch remover paste to clean up the cover earlier and it's like new. I found your video as I need to sort out the pitch pots. Will look at them later with the contact cleaner. Your video is one of the best I've come across. Thanks.

      Fun fact; I just found my own video trying to figure out the pitch pots, I completely forgot I did that in this video, haha.
      Happy to help! Sorry for the slow response!

    Great video thank you. I pulled out a 206 I’ve stored in a closet for 10 years, and ordered an AT VM95e to throw on. Actually got that for my Technics 1600 that’s also been stored. Hoping to compare them. Assuming the Technics is better but built quality on both is amazing.

    • @rollingtroll
      @rollingtroll  Před rokem

      The Technics is definitely the better record player, with quite a lead. Main reason being the suspended subchassis. It gives the Technics so much musicality that it almost sounds 'un-direct drive' good. AT-VM95E is a great match for either of them :).

    I have that same turntable and same speed control issue. Thanks for the video. I need to clean it. You're lucky to have the complete dust cover. My hinges broke so I just set it on when not in use. Those hinges break easily after time.

    • @rollingtroll
      @rollingtroll  Před 2 lety +1

      There were two type of hinges, in one the spring breaks through the (after all these years brittle) plastic. And then there's a series of hinges with slightly softer plastic. You could get friction hinges at a DIY shop, but honestly; With how much resonances a dust cover picks up, you're better off taking it off anyway. The player will sound better, especially if you play loud :D.
      Cleaning the pots is an easy one so if that's all, you're saved! Make sure your player stops properly and doesn't randomly start playing. If it does (and they often do) the spark killer over the power switch is dead. You can cut it out but you will get a 'pop' through your speakers every time you turn it on, and the power switch will wear out quicker. Ideally you'd replace it.

      @@rollingtroll just needs a pot cleaning. Works perfectly otherwise. Looking forward to cleaning it. Solid turntable. Nice that WD40 makes the cleaner now. Half the price of the competition. For something I'll use once in many years...better option for me.

    whats a good stylus upgrade for these? great video. oh in comments you said its average sounding - what is a beast one to look out for? can upgrading the stlus make it sound like a Ferarri?

    • @rollingtroll
      @rollingtroll  Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks! You would have to do a full cartridge upgrade. I would personally go for an audiotechnica atvm95e. Not too expensive, definitely very good. It will never sound like a Ferrari as this record player just isn’t that musical sounding. If you want to get a bigger upgrade, find yourself a nice Pioneer PL112D. The world still hasn’t figured out how good those are ;).

      @@rollingtroll Thanks very much :-) New hobby - I got this 206c recently for $100 here in New Zealand. so much to learn. esp when I tried to use it for the first time and found out they need pre amps lol. thanks for the advice - I will look into these recommendations, Cheers.

      @rollingtroll  Před 2 lety

      I don’t think you can on this one. Your best option is to pick a different headshell. That said; most carts are not that high. If you are installing an ortofon 2M; maybe don’t :)

    How does this turntable compare to Pioneer turntables from the 70's? I might buy one that is currently on the ads, but it has a problem that when it turns on, it spins non-stop and won't turn off. Is it a serious malfunction?

    • @rollingtroll
      @rollingtroll  Před rokem +1

      Really badly. Just get a Pioneer PL-112D in that case, it's a hidden gem :).
      As for that issue; It's the spark killer, you can replace it, or even just remove it, and the problem will be solved. But it's not a great sounding record player. The good Akais are the simple ones, weirdly :)

  • @aelxxs

    Hello, do you know where I can get my hands on one of these? They're hard to come by here in the states. I'm looking for a 206 or 306

    • @rollingtroll
      @rollingtroll  Před 2 lety +1

      First ask yourself why. If you want it to complete a rig, go for it. If you want it because it's a great record player, may I recommend something else? They are average sounding, at best :).
      I unfortunately am nowhere near the states so I wouldn't know where to get them. The models we have here are also 230v and I don't think you can switch that. If you have a power transformer from 110 to 240v though, you should be able to use it. Bare in mind that the stroboscope won't read correctly (as it's designed to work with a 50hz light source).
      I think your best option, and that's really always the case, is to check the record player categories on your favourite auction sites every day, and just be patient. It's how I end up with virtually everything I have and sometimes it takes months or even years, but that way you never overpay :)
