DAY 9 PREVIEW: Two-time champion John Isner headlines day two of the men’s ASB Classic.
The 37-year-old American won the title in 2010 and 2014 and is always a huge threat with his serve, having landed 13,990 aces during his career, more than anyone else on the ATP Tour.
Isner takes on French qualifier Gregoire Barrere in his opening match. If the match is forced onto the slicker indoor courts due to forecasted wet weather, Isner’s serve will be even more of a threat.
At the other end of the age spectrum, another American of interest has a wildcard into the main draw and is seen as a rising star in US tennis, having cracked the top 100 in the rankings (92) at just 20. Lefthander Ben Shelton is the youngest of 13 Americans in the top 100 and had a win over tournament top seed and world number three, Casper Ruud last year. He takes on Argentine Sebastian Baez in the first round.
Defending champion Ugo Humbert, a late wildcard into the main draw, takes on American qualifier Christopher Eubanks.
