- Back in the legendary Power Station (Avatar Studios) where “Born In The U.S.A.” was recorded, Max Weinberg, drummer for Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, shares some insight on the drum sound behind the classic track.

shocking footage - Max in a T-Shirt!
I’ve always thought Born and Dancing were two great examples of studio drumming. Dancing basically doesn’t have a single fill throughout the entire tune whereas Born has a monster fill at the end of every four bars. Both are perfect for what they are and that’s why Max is a beast of a player.
"IT SURE IS MAX"
*dead face*
I love Springsteen, but Weinberg should have had songwriting credits for Born In the USA. It's his drumming that makes the song interesting musically.
Max and Charlie! Two of my favorite drummers of all time.
Weinberg was a HUGE part of Springsteen's sound at this time period. His Charlie Watts inspired fills are
perfect for this song. Rest easy Charlie. We could never forget you.
Max kicks ass on drums!
One of the BEST drummers ever!
Watch his son play with Slipknot you’ll see who’s best
@@DominicMaliksi yeah it's Max
@@ryanwakley1640 Yeah right...lol
His son can do more with his feet than Max can do with all limbs!
In all due respect...Max isn't even in the top 100 "BEST" drummers of all time.
Indeed, there are girls on CZcams...that are better than him!
@@cassandragarcia5548 I guess "better" is in the eye of the beholder. Most experienced musicians (Ie musicians that have toured, recorded on well known records, etc) will tell you it is FAR easier to play with a lot of "chops"/fills and showboating then it is to play consistently on multiple hit records. That is why there are thousands of flashy drummers but very few Jim Keltners, Hal Blaines, JR Robinsons, Steve Gadds, etc.
Max you are the best drumer in the world forever & you max is my favorite drummer in the world forever
Ahhh, this is great. Love these behind-the-scenes glimpses.
I miss Max and Conan together
It must be so odd for a musician to record a song in the spring of 1982 and know that they really had something amazing - and then the album doesn't get released for another 2 years!
So happy for him, and his son!
Terry Hesticles Isn't his son in Slipknot?
Yuuuuup!
One of the coolest drummers!
I can see ringo in those fills. love it!
Charlie Watts too
In this video you can see him at Ringo's kit! czcams.com/video/wJTjjAXDZSY/video.html
I didn't realize the parallel between Street Fighting Man and Born in the USA, but now that I've heard Max mention it, it makes complete sense.
Check out Springsteen's SXSW keynote speech. He talks about how he ripped off the Animals for Born to Run. As soon as you hear it, you can't unhear it.
This guy can drum I seen him do a solo I never knew he was that good he wailed that shit
Max has got to come back to Conan's show! He's a big part of the comedy and music of the show.
In the book written by Max, "The Big Beat", there was only one drummer missing from those included. Unfortunately, the time line for the book could not allow this missing
drummer. That would have been Max Weinberg himself...one of THE most important Rock drummers of our time...style, strength, finesse, timing, chops...Max had it all...
and this is just my own epilogue for his phenomenal book....THANKS, MAX!!
Sounds so different to hear the drums isolated like that! Great talent to have😊
That and Bob Clearmountain. Thank God for that guy
Eric John
Had to scroll through all the comments first to see if anyone else had beat me to referencing Clearmountain and the sound he helped create on that track. Absolutely legendary album for drummers, thanks to him.
Happy 70th Birthday Max
I envy talented musicians.
That tight ass bass drum! 🥁. Man, he's great.
Max is a solid as a chunk or granite
Crazy, Dad and Son in 2 legendary bands.
Kiwi son? Legendary band ? 🙄🙄
@@enniogatto6785 Jay Weinberg for Slipknot? You can think what you want about them but Slipknot reached legendary status.
Max un grande batterista !!! Carismatico bravissimo!!! 😀😇😅😍😘🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶💎💋🌟
My next drum teacher max weinberg
Max is a great drummer, but when I see him, I always think of Conan first. Max led a great band on Conan and was in so many great skits. He's hilarious. Loved Max on that show. 👍
Go Max !!! 🍻
One of the best
Utter legend.
max is a fucking legend
Even as a 15 year old, Max's drumming on this song gave me goosebumps as it does today!
Do we have more details on the type of snare drum and heads used? I GUESS a Ludwig Supraphonic but is there somewhere a documented source?
With a coated Ambassador batter, and Ambassador Snare?
That's what I would guess.
Guitar Center Bites- there, fixed it for ya.
nice
Max, what do you think of your - what they've done with your?? - drum sound on the Nassau releases?
I don't know how they could screw those up. Why didn't they have Bob Clearmountain do those shows? Listen to his stellar job on the Tempe 1980 show. He should be doing all these Archive releases.
Max Fucking Weinberg
Wow.
Love
Different left hand grip for this song?
Top man
I (stupidly) thought "I can do what he does, and he's a top session player!) right up until the 2:22 mark. Then, I shit my trousers and feared for my hands and reputation. "Hit it out of the park". Yeah, I'll say.
Max should make video with Drumeo
I learned how to play drums by listening and copying Max Weinberg, Frank Beard, and Alex Van Halen. I am still inspired by Max Weinberg's drum skills.
Why Max is not with Conan anymore?
So why can't I play the drums huh?
He wears glasses.
Where's Labomba
You cant hit them all ❤😂
Wonder if he still hates the Smashing Pumpkins.
Why would he? How could anyone ?
Tap tap tap
Avatar or the Power Station just closed it's doors, and was bought by the Berklee College of Music.
He rushed the beat at the start
Good for tinnitus 😂😂😂😂😂
Is this the same disgusting company that smashes up worthy instruments and throws them in dumpsters ?
Damn he gained some weight huh..oh well
Not a very good player, nothing special here, incredibly ordinary.
