Her greens recipe is honestly a classic one. But if you want to crank your greens up in the flavor department season your smoked turkey necks or pork, garlic, and onions while they're searing I typically go with pepper flakes, paprika, and a BIT of brown sugar and in your "pot liquor" instead of using water use a broth of your choice (chicken, veggie, or beef) add some Worcestershire, some matching bouillon flavor, browning, and a few spices you like. This is my own personal twist on my mommas traditional greens recipe.
Your recipe sounds gorgeous!! Hers was a bit basic, you were right!
You had me at brown sugar. Yes
Yes her greens were a bit basic.. but it’s the traditional way. I cook mine like yours except for the brown sugar.. I will try that next time. I love well seasoned food. And the smoked turkey necks are just everything! The flavor they give!
Yessss
I think I’m gonna need a plate after that description 👀
I love when the 4 corners of the diaspora come together for a video. I wanna try to make all of these.
Technically, Nigerians are not part of the diaspora. Nigeria is part of Africa. Therefore, it is not the diaspora. But I share your sentiment.
@@homoeconomicus5711 If they are of Nigerian parentage and born and raised outside of Nigeria/Africa aren’t the part of the diaspora then?
@@KatrinaE11 No. Typically when we talk about a diaspora, we are referring to people who are FORCED out of their ancestral homeland. Immigrants are typically not referred to as part of a diaspora. And when people talk about the African diaspora, they are typically referring to those who are descendants of enslaved africans taken out of Africa during the transatlantic slave trade.
I was going to share a beans peeling hack with her, it will be done in less than 5 minutes. The beans soaked too long before peeling.
So, what's the hack?
@@essenceofsoul27 Intermittent pulsing in the blender, but she let the beans soak for too long, for the hack to work.
Please Sisi come and help her... kai
@@emeraldblessings honestly
What’s the hack
Smoked meat, garlic and onion is what makes greens to me. I love the term “pot liquor” ☺️
With hot water corn bread
Its pot Likka! lol
I’d never heard the term and read it this morning in the book I’m reading (but spelt ‘pot likker’ - I can’t get over the coincidence of seeing it again 🤯 I’m in New Zealand 🇳🇿
@@cocoa_goddess6101 You speaking my language. That combo right there is everything.
pot liquor and corn bread
As a Haitian, we DO NOT eat legume for Thanksgiving. That's more of a quick, nutritious Sunday meal. We eat baked Mac, potato salad (with beets), Macaroni salad, Turkey, black rice, and sweet potato pie for dessert.
Facts lol
Same!!!!!
Same
Exactly I haven’t seen no Haitian person eating Legume on thanksgiving day ,that’s got to be coming from his household not all Haitian households.
@@jennif3roliv3 lmao 🤣 😂 😆
I'm American but my wife is Nigerian (I'm going to Abuja this week) if I could guess where the first sister slightly messed up was letting the peas sit too long they only need like an hour in water. The blender will do the rest. Also she definitely needed the moin moin cups.
Are the skins/peels removed before blending or does the blender just push them to the top making it easier to take out of the mixture
@@amykearns9470 after you blend it, pass it through a strainer and the skin won’t go through
@@joycee2199 nice hack
This was beautifully symbolic of our story and I bet it all came together to make an excellent dinner meal. This was awesome.
"Thanksgiving looks different all around the world". I mean Thanksgiving is definitely purely North American, but that cultural diversity in different households really is 🔥🔥
This was absolutely beautiful!
I just wanna say, THANK YOU for this. This was a dope idea
Loved the diversity of the food on this video and homage to each culture featured. Thank you.
this video was dope!! coming together across the diaspora is always a beautiful thing to see; much respect 🤎
I love this channel❤. It always speaks to me and helps me learn and appreciate different cultures of people that look like me. Thank you👏🏽
This video is so amazing. Every dish looked delicious. The cooking instructions and guides were perfect. Thank you all for making this video.
I love that there is a desire to highlight Nigerian cuisine. Like seriously, love that. AND I am frustrated that y’all haven’t been able to find Nigerians who are comfortable with cooking our traditional dishes.
💯 Especially since so many African Americans are of Nigerian descent.
@@mpearlw Nigeria didn’t exist when we were transported over here
@@mpearlw you dimwits have to stop talking about their Nigerian heritage it leads to comment like the one above mine
@@mrkjsmooth16 ok my Benin heritage, modern day Nigeria. What was your point?

I don't know what haitian household he's talking about, in my house we have roasted or fried Turkey with Mac N Cheese, and Russian potato salad and rice and beans
What's a Russian Potato Salad?
@@brownskinbeauty. Salad Russe is potato salad with Beets and and carrots.czcams.com/video/y_qbjLiiYRw/video.html
@@dellytancyl524 Yo, he added corn and beans to the russe salad. I love and hate how we have different versions of food😭.
@@jessicamompoint1849 when I was a kid everyone added peas, but that got expensive in a hurry in the 90s so everyone I know stop using it but corn is new to me entirely.
@@dellytancyl524 But it doesn't look bad 🤔 I might try it.
Looking at the the crispy skin of that pernil.... my arteries are telling me nooooooo but my belly...my BELLY is telling YYEEESSSSSS!
perfect vid for my lunch break!! 😋 happy thanksgiving!! 🦃
Happy holidays! Everything looked so good!
Everything looked sooo good, Happy Thanksgiving ! ❤️😍🤤
The link up was a nice touch 👌🏾👌🏾
I love this video. Hope y'all do one for Christmas as well 😁❤️🤗
BABY THAT PERNIL NEED WAY MORE SEASONING. AND THE SKIN SHOULD BE PEELED BACK ALMOST OFF. U WANNA COOK IT FOR AT LEAST 5-6 HOURS.
At least 5X the amount of seasoning my she used lol
I’m not Puerto Rican but I am Black- if you ain’t sneezin’ it ain’t seasoned 🥲
Love this so Much!!!
This was really cool. Thanks for the video
this was a top tier video , kudos 👏 🙌 👌
Last year we did an International Thanksgiving where we had dishes from other cultures traditional served on holidays. I did a Pernil and let me tell you the crispy skin only lasted a day and a morning, the rest of the pork lasted 2 days. That jawn was soooo good. I definitely want to try the Haitian Legume.
I did my Pernil a little different where I pounded fresh garlic with the seasonings and only stabbing the meat not the skin. I just cut the skin underneath straight to where there was a flap and added adobo on the top. I then used an oven bag and let it cook in it own juices.
😂 I read your comment and, as a vegetarian, I thought ‘oh fantastic - I love legumes, and it’s probably vegetarian!’ - nary a lentil to be seen?! I’m getting a schooling in this video 👍👍
@@NZKiwi87 You're not the only one.🤣When I hear legumes I think beans too. lol I just wish there were more Haitian restaurants in my community so I could try this first then make it. Learning how to make Epis was a game changer for my cooking so I can only imagine what this would do.
Everything looked amazing. Food is such a universal language.
I aint never had legume for thanksgiving. Its gotta be the party meals that you don't get on the regular like haitian mac, potato salad, etc...
As a Nigerian, we will def have moi moi as well this Thanksgiving
Oh no , honey ! Drew , nobody cooking legume on Thanksgiving maybe that Saturday/Sunday but not on Thanksgiving.
This was adorable
Ki sa??? Mwen se ayisien🇭🇹🇭🇹🇭🇹, NOU JAMN MANJE legume pou thanksgiving. It’s always djon djon, makawoni au gratin, fritay (turkey), and red potato salad
Not every Haitian household is the same. His family makes legume, and that's cool.
@@jessicamompoint1849 exactly!! As if we’re supposed to make the same thing for Thanksgiving.
That was a good one❤❤❤
The thing I don't like about these videos is the people in the comments "Haitian households don't....Us Nigerians wouldn't ever....", and then proceed to talk negatively about the food or person. Maybe the participants should specify what goes down in THEIR household, as opposed to their Culture. Since everyone within a culture doesn't do the same thing. These participants in this video were great, but as a whole, when you compare our videos (participants and comments) to similar ones; we have more negativity. Why? The constructive criticism is good. People giving some tips to the first lady on how to get her beans to peel easier, was nice. The shady comments about the Haitian dude and his legumes were unnecessary.
It’s just that legume isn’t a special occasion food in Haitian culture in general. But he explained in comments that it’s a family favorite so they have it in their family. But most households wouldn’t have legumes.
Oh no baby, that “perkneel” needs WAY more seasoning in it cause I know them juices tasted like vitamin water 🙃
😂😂😂
I love pernil, yours looks so delicious!
Love it !!!
I was surprised the greens only took 45 minutes to cook once added. I feel like my mom always did it for hours.
Them collard greens needs more time I'm used to dark greens, they usually take all day in my house we let them cook overnight so we can have them for thanksgiving but she can hand that cornbread over here I haven't had any cornbread all year and it's a damn shame.
I need to try that cornbread recipe!
I love me some cornbread 😍
Jiffy mix with a twist does it during the year, but holiday season I need it from scratch!
Change the Africa to Nigeria in the description please
No offense, but I’ve never seen anyone have legume for thanksgiving in a Haitian household. We usually have the traditional foods like macaroni au gratin, potato salad and such. Legume is a hearty dinner for the weekends or a random week night lol
Regardless, I loved how this video showed the many beautiful cultures of the diaspora through food 🥘❤️😋
I was about to say the same thing but I was saying to myself. Imma let him do his thang 😂😂
In his Haitian household, they apparently do.
Exactly !
I wonder what part of Haiti his family is from ...... I learned that different parts of Haiti do things differently...
Beautiful ❤️
This was a great video idea.
Great recipes! I would’ve given my greens about 20 more minutes though.
Gonna have to try the epis! Sounds so good
Oh no ma'am, pernil is not pronounced like that. Also where is the sofrito? That pernil needs LOTS more seasonings.
Yes sis! Lol I was like … what? And I’m Jamaican and Haitian.
That pernil wasn't right.
😂🤣
I was saying the same thing where's the sofrito. But every culture is different.
not only that i cannot believe her mother told her to use water instead of a MOJO!
I love this video. My bf it’s from Nigeria 🇳🇬 n I’m from 🇵🇷
Beautiful people 😍💓
Ehen. I'm gonna give it to the channel for not having her make jollof rice. Everytime its a Nigerian cooking, they're making jollof. And she tried for the moi moi!
Very true
Please invite someone with Angolan etnicity the food is so good yall will enjoy it, i never see my country being represented :(
I remember jasmine from the date my fit “car edition”
I don’t eat pork but definitely interested in trying the second recipe with the beef.
Nice, unity amongst US! Enjoy!
Drew representing Haiti 🇭🇹🫂💕
This video makes me so happy! This holiday doesn't have the best history, but for the African diaspora, celebrating it is not about any twisted version of American history, but about sharing love and gratitude through cultural foods, tradition and togetherness.
Moi moi is my favorite thing in the world 🇳🇬 ❤😋
Ig Jasmine found her a man Cus just 2 months ago she was Lookin for one by they outfit 😂
Everything looks good 👍🏾 🇭🇹
I was hoping that there was pernil for the Puerto Rican one, and I was not disappointed. I also made pernil for my family this thanksgiving (my husband’s family never had before since they are white/Ukrainian American).
I also am black so of course I made my greens and baked Mac. But for my greens I did smoked Turkey neck and whooohhh that pot liquor was something serious 😩😩.
I love Pernil!!!!!
What is this Zoe man talking about? I never had legume on Thanksgiving.
As an Nigerian American I can confirm everything that she said is true😂😂
the legume!!!!!!!!!!! love to see it
I’m Puerto Rican and black my mother makes Pernil every year for thanksgiving AND Christmas… everyone seasons differently but I don’t think it’s enough. Oh and the way she is saying Pernil that is not how we pronounce it
Do they usually add some sofrito??
She didn’t season it enough. Her pronounciation got me like: wtf
@@SammiTheSweetheart327 yes sofrito
Everyone who makes pernil does not necessarily use sofrito. I do not and I was taught by my grandmother who grew up on the island. Garlic is a major player in making pernil or a whole lechon. Pork should be cleaned incorporating lemon or lime juice or sour oranges. That also helps to marinate the pork. Adobo and oregano is a must. Some folks also like using black pepper, comino and even sazon. There are variations in the method just like everyone doesn’t necessarily cook arroz con gandules the same way.
@@canelaboriqua2003 Taking notes lol. That sounds really flavorful though. Thanks for sharing 💜
Um…was hoping for a reaction scene to all that yummy looking food!
Yessss c’mon moi moi!! 🇳🇬🇳🇬🇳🇬
sweet
Aww I wanted to see them eat
You guys could include Jamaica please
Where was the finished product of the moi moi? 😅
Honestly wearing a hair net is the best way to go people. I’ll never forget I was eating somebody’s food and I found 2 long pieces of hair in my food and I’ll never eat nobody’s cooking never again.
Suggestion... For the Moin Moin, use Nigerian Honey Beans instead of Black Eyed Beans. The skins come off in 1/4 of the time!!
Always have to check with the master chef: Mom or G Ma...that's what's up
Lmfao I don’t know what haitain has legume at thanksgiving 🥴😗but okkkk guess we all different
Some of us have legume, and some of us have our turkey chopped instead of whole. That's the beauty of Haitian households.
Why didnt you just say Nigeria in the Description instead of Africa?
You thumb yourself up.
@@PennyMsElite no?
@@justinwinn01 Yes I see it.
@@PennyMsElite you stand corrected Sis because the person is right, when are Americans going to learn that Africa is a continent and not a country, I am Nigerian but I have enough common sense to know that the foods we eat are completely different to the foods they eat in South Africa, Central Africa, Northern Africa and especially East Africa. It’s really not that hard 🤷🏾♀️
@@PennyMsElite i didn't, idk what else too tell you
I don’t think my mom ever made legume for thanksgiving. That’s way too much energy for a fake holiday.
Hay hayyyyyyyy, that’s what i was gonna say. i have never seen legume for thanksgiving 😂
The first girl is gorgeous!
Bro….,Nigerian Queen is soooooo beautiful. That pleasant face and smile…..plus the hair. Sis is just gorgeous
Drew went off with that Legume!
Africa and Nigeria are not synonymous… Africa is not a country, please don’t repeat the ignorance of those who don’t know better @cocoa butter
Exactly, thank you!
Let's acknowledge the roots of this holiday as fellow oppressed people.
Pernil 🇵🇷 👌🏾
Alrighty 😁
When he put prego spaghetti sauce in the legume my heart stopped 😞 you don’t put tomato sauce 🤢you but tomato paste

The legume was sad but why did it get three minutes of shine????
You didn't season the greens and where is the macaroni and roast
Wait?????????? Where’s the sofrito? Sazon?
I'm biased for our rican food but it was her first time she didn't do no rice no other stuff sadly lmao

Those greens are too green for me. I want my greens to slow cook to the point where it gets that deep green color. Like grandma used to make and then it just melts in your mouth 🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤
Isn't Thanksgiving only USA? I was thinking this was about different cultures doing their own take on it. Watching the video I got confused. Probably just being stupid! Any info welcome. Loved watching all the recipes. Food is love all over the world!
sir we don't eat legume on thanksgiving 🤦🏿♀️
