      Lead vocalist Bono wrote the lyrics in response to the notion that it is possible to identify a person's religion and income based on the street on which they lived, particularly in Belfast.

      Growing up my mom and dad had this album on cd. We played it at top sound every Sunday before church. My parents were raging addicts who couldn’t save themselves. Christ was their only reprieve. This song was the last on the cd. We turned it as loud as it could go on our massive speakers and we shook our tiny house. We shook moms china off the piano. She was furious. Dad thought it was more important that we felt the music of God. He was right. Mom died of a suicide overdose in 2008. Dad died of cancer after a 60 year battle with addiction in 2017. Although I lost him in 2009 too.
      This drumming is the core memory that I feel today when I turn it up in my car and I feel God holding me. I feel my parents holding me. If that drummer is only going that hard for me and me alone. He has done his service in Christ. That is the reason Christ inspired him so much that night. So it could impact my life in a small North Carolina town.

    Fact; 2 guitar players and 1 keyboardist is needed to do what only The edge is capable. lol

    How is this song about heaven? It’s a song of hope in THiS lifetime - where there’s no division of religion, wealth, class and race. In heaven, there is no need to hope for unity because everyone is united by the blood of Christ.
    To me, the reason for this performance is a lame excuse to cover this song in a Christian concert. I understand that it’s fun to play bc of the musicality, but misinterpreting this song and using that to play this song in concert is pretty sad...

    • @KoachKarl
      @KoachKarl Před 3 lety

      I can understand that. It does have a sense of hijackinf to it. For me, the song speaks of my desire for part of heaven to be realized on Earth. Where neighborhoods aren’t divided by wealth, religion, class, race. That will happen in heaven. But what am I doing to help “thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven” become a reality? U2s song is a catalyst for me to do what I can - while I Hope for the future.

    • @meganclick6002
      @meganclick6002 Před 3 lety +1

      U2 itself has interpreted it in this way.During the Elevation tour, Bono prefaced it with Psalm 116, and during 360, Amazing Grace led into it. In both performances, the streets were basically heaven.

  • @JeffWiersma
    @JeffWiersma Před 7 lety +1

    Yeah this song is most definitely not about "all of the attention in heaven being on Jesus," and the lyrics don't go "dance in that HOLY rain."
    McChristianity at it's most cheese dick. We've done this song at my church for decades, and we do the real song; I.e. without the televangelist monologue before and the lame lyric changes.
