I like this episode, but have to admit the story was done better in TNG. Not the one where Barclay was afraid of the transporter, the one where Camel-toe went through an entire episode in a few seconds staring into the warp engine because someone with her abilities had died there. I don't mind stories like this, but they definitely shouldn't be overused; it's skating too close to multiverse.
Actually, your comments made me think of when we saw that Shyamalan film The Village. My wife, who knew nothing about the director and had been expecting an actual horror story, was confused, then outraged at the reveal. I actually blurted out loud to the entire theatre, "Oh, for chrissakes, it's the damn Truman Show!"
