  • I have already discussed some aspects of this machine's full engine rebuild, but a new conrod, big end and piston didn't quieten the engine as much as I had initially hoped. It turned out there were some other culprits for some of the noise, on top of those worn items.

    Congratulations Paul on getting this bike running so well. You've said that this model was short lived and had several issues, which is a shame because it is certainly a good looking bike. I'm sure the owner will be pleased with all the work you have done. Stay safe. Cheers. 👍👍🏍🇨🇦

      I love the look of the lean burn engines, and Pauls attention to detail is outstanding. The models were mainly short lived due to the ever developing need to get the emissions cleaner, resulting in the C5 EFI models. I still want a trials version of the electra X.

    That cam lobe was clearly worn Paul , and as the cam lobe only runs against the cam follower I would have suspected the cam follower surface would have been worn dished and also needed replacing . looks to me as this engine has been abused , done more miles than recorded or run with incorrect oil or all of the above . I used to run a 1989 350 Enfield daily ,only fail I had was the kickstart pawl . Keep up the good work and the vids . Loved your knowledge on the different models on the earlier post .

      Thanks, Dave. That follower was dished, hence the follower and pushrod rising and falling as I moved the cam in and out, but i was able to clean up the outer circumference of the follower face to improve things to some degree. Removal and replacing of that follower would require removal of the top end again, and some rather fiddly work.

    Engine running with surplus power even before the piston and rings are seated. Really, an uncomfortable noise seems to persist on the right side of the engine, close to the elevators. If it were Norton, Ariel, BSA or Triumph, you could go straight to the rods or the impellers. In these R.Es. models I do not know how to say it, because there is a nr. large number of moving parts rotating, running sideways and rubbing. The type of engine to use high quality oil in any rtegime of use. The information and the usual and relaxed return were too worthwhile. Grateful!

    Do you think that the inlet cam could be starving a bit for oil, or it was just a bad hardening job from the factory? At first when going along on the rides, I couldn't make hide or hair of where you were going, but I think I know where your going off by heart, to the point when you arrive back home, I say to myself, home sweet home.

    One might suppose that the origin of the 'noise problemme' is associated with non-linear intake cam lobe (08:49) ? The contact patch being worn.
    Viewing the Cam-gears, & their housing, everything appears bone-dry: i.imgur.com/m8BMjpe.png
    Before filming, did ya steam clean it...or shoot a can of Brake Cleaner on that area ?

    • @paulhenshaw4514
      @paulhenshaw4514  Před 3 lety

      Hi Amelie, no pressure washing or cleaning with solvents were done there, although I wiped it out with a clean cloth before oiling the cams etc on reassembly. Also, once the oil I caught was put back in through the filler, this compartment would also partially fill with oil again, so it wouldn't run dry. Just a case of premature and / or excessive wear for some reason.

    • @paulhenshaw4514
      @paulhenshaw4514  Před 3 lety +2

      The cam follower runs in a bush, a bit like a valve guide. There was no play, but the follower face had more wear on it than I would have expected, although I was able to clean that up to a degree.

    • @paulhenshaw4514
      @paulhenshaw4514  Před 3 lety +2

      It sounds like piston slap, but it is not. The piston is new, the bore is good, ring gaps good. Also, the noise is more prominent with the engine warm, piston slap is most evident with the engine cold. This is almost certainly timing gear related and the sound is reduced [but not gone] after work in that area.
