- This is not Asbo 41, by the way!
This machine was brought in yesterday, with reported engine noises. After checking and attending to some of the more basic components which can cause noises, it was time to take a look inside, where a rather grim discovery was made.
If you have to strip it Paul would you show us the process ?
Thanks. If I strip and rebuild it, I will probably discuss various aspects of the job!
Good find.
Are the con-rods usually that oil coked on the Enfields? She's been running very hot it seems.
I am beginning to suspect the true mileage covered by this machine may be much more than the 6000 showing, but if the engine has been slogged for 6000 miles, it could be genuine mileage.
I believe the engine on the current(soon to be discontinued) models was re-designed due to this kind of problem.
Well, that's not good, but nothing that can't be fixed! and after, maybe some instruction on how not to slog the engine too, cheers Dave
I had this same problem on my Machismo 500 which is the Electra X. The big end bearing was shot. I think that might have been the case with this bike Paul? I am now in Australia but really miss this bike. I know it has some issues but boy when it sings it sings really good. Mine in India is a 2009 and I can tell you the late models didn't have the spray clutch issue. I removed it for the fear of going but it is intact when i removed it around 25000 kms.
Looking forward to the rest of this strip down.has it been worked hard paul was just looking at the back end of the silencer on the film .not seen many blue like that with heat .not that far back or is that normal for one of these.anyway am sure you will get down to the bottom of this and all corrected.thanks again for the film.
6000 seams real new for that kind of problem but shit happens.
6000 miles, that's less miles than the Tiger Cub expected life for the big end, which was around 10000, but that was in the hands of a sixteen year old.
Paul what is the expected life of a big end on a Redditch Bullet 500 ?
Just like Tiger Cubs, big end life depends on good servicing and not labouring the engine in high gears under heavy load. Many Bullets fall into these traps, but doing 45 - 50 mph in top gear everywhere is not necessarily being kind to the big end and slogging will see them off in no time. The Redditch [and even Indian] plain big ends are usually very good and wrongly assumed to be weak.
Is that a burn ring on the gudgeon pin? Has the rod got a twist/ bend in it? 🤔
The gudgeon pin looks like it has been a little hot, but it is fine, although the conrod has a lot of carbon on it, I don't think it is out of shape. I am also not convinced the mileage showing is genuine.
@@paulhenshaw4514 I was going to say similar to Hugh. I guess with piston slap it may push the gudgeon pin across one way or the other!
@@davidrenn6897 I think the slight play in the big end caused hammering to do this.
@@paulhenshaw4514 yet the badly worn bushed big ends don't seem to do this! Would it be the longer piston skirt supporting better?
@@davidrenn6897 Possibly, although they also have alloy conrods, if that might make some difference.
After hearing this, is it really just the owner to tell what happened to leave the engine in that state after just 6000 miles?
I'm at exactly the same situation with Sam's Electra but, she has done 26,000 miles.
I'm trying to figure out how to remove the engine without removing the centre stand (maybe that's not possible without suspending the bike or propping it up?)
Please let me know if you progress further. Especially if you use some modified bearings
Hi Jason, I made quite a few videos during the rebuild work on this machine. Here is one from the end, which includes a ride, but other shorter ones discuss the engine work ... czcams.com/video/E2EEMHgTLRQ/video.html
@@paulhenshaw4514 Thanks Paul.
Did you remove the engine from the frame to split the casings.
Ours looks like the gearbox will prevent that. And the centre stand will have to be removed too?
@@jasonreeves6325 Yes, the engine has to come out, then the gearbox has to come off. You will need to steady the bike and support it, as the centre stand and lower engine plates have to be swung out of the way.
If you want a Royal Enfield get a British one
Indian ones can - and should be relatively cheap, the British ones had much better build quality and are worth more as a result.
It is funny how the Japanese do not seem to have trouble with roller bearing big-ends, I wonder what their secret is?
The British used them successfully for decades, too. It is probably a combination of bad metallurgy and the fact many RE riders seem to like to slog their engines, which is no good for any big end.
Expensive miles...
Was this due to lack of oil changes?
Possibly - I don't know the history of this machine and the mileage done might be much higher than that shown on the clock.
Thanks Paul . I have the same engine with regular oil changes.
I will stay calm and carry on.
Is that connecting is anIndian made?
The whole machine and its components are Indian made.
@@paulhenshaw4514 ...how can you get spare parts...! Am living in India i can get any parts of AVL bullets.
@@johnroyte4213 Thanks, I shall inform the owner.
I gave my Electra X away because it was a pile of junk.
I bought one new, worst pile of crap I have ever seen!
It came with a porus head! It leaked oil from the head, the electric start was rubbish,it broke starter sprag clutches by the week, even after a spark delay device was fitted!
And the kick start was dangerous to use because of a violent kickback!
All I can say is stay clear!
Reading between the lines, I take it you are not a fan of them?
very weak audio
Sell it get a Honda 😁😁🤘🤘
Not mine to sell and I have a Honda already, thanks!
Typical Electra X pile of rubbish.
