Ruby is brilliant, she found her calling. All her side roads in life led her to this point to teach and bring this to the forefront.

I love Ruby,I think she does great work trying to raise awareness and look at alternative ways of us developing more resilience and better mental wellbeing.Mindfulness is a practice that can take many different forms, essentially it is about developing self awareness and recognising negative thought patterns and emotional states, like recognising when we are stressed, angry, sad and so on.We need to teach our children emotional intelligence.

Found this so interesting. Thank you Ruby! My Mum is a mental health nurse, so I have large empathy with people suffering with these diseases. Love you for using your voice for this!

Ruby interviewing Jim Carrey - another very intelligent person - in the Dorcester, I think, is still one of the funniest things you can watch on youtube.

ref the negative comments below , the thing I noticed and admire is that Ruby never tried to talk about stuff that wasn't in her chosen field ... are we not allowed to be honest ? It takes courage ,when faced with questions , to not compulsively give an answer that you don't know squat about.

Just remember folks, everybody understands differently. In that, she reaches a audience that opens an idea that they were searching for... Better yet how it's delivered, like she says. It doesn't really matter what's done in the past or how she talks. Works for you, then that's all there's to it. Thanks Ruby!

The kid who I work with, showed me a brilliant way to get the negative outside of himself.
It is a little routine to go bring his hands up and down and go moew pushing the negative out of himself. And then it does not matter who is around, he keeps going until he is in the "green zone". Then he is calm.
He taught me a great way to destess.
He has adhd and ads. And this calms with his visiolisation.

Ruby is an absolute star and lioness for sharing her mental health journey and vast knowledge. I think Jim AK was not the best interviewer but got there in the end by allowing Ruby space to talk. Very interesting thank you.

My mindfulness moment came decades ago, when I heard Enigma and their songs. To this day, that rhythm is to slow me down and this of the slow and still countryside.
It helps me to disconnect and turn into myself. I find it much better than alcohol and cigarettes. (I have been drinking for about 7 years)
And as an Aries person, I need water to calm me down. I go to water, being in water to calm me and disconnect from everything.
Maybe try the water to calm.

My Dad probably had Clinical Depression but still survived the Great Depression and WWII to have two children. I myself had Dysthymia (a minor version of depression) It was debilitating! I have no idea how my Father lived through it! It is very painful! I would rather have had something else.

Ruby just talks random stuff that makes some sense, but she just hops around all over the place. Listening to her go on and on just gives me a headache!

    • @CountScarlioni
      @CountScarlioni Před 9 lety +1

Sadly I have to agree. As a long term sufferer of mental illness (specifically bipolar disorder) I thought this might make interesting viewing, but I found Ruby lost a point more than she made one. A shame because when she was coherent she was excellent.
I too have a long list of well-meaning people whom I wish I could slap for all the years they told me to cheer up and snap out of it! All that ever did was imprison me even more inside my head and I fully agree it's something that society has to get away from.
As always though Professor Al-Khalili is superb.
I've tried Mindfulness CBT and frankly I don't feel I gained much from it. I can see how it can work for some but it's not a one size fits all. I think you need a certain kind of personality for it to give real results and it's not a personality I have.

    • @brucecolemancfo5087

CountScarlioni I also have Bi-polar. I spent years as a Buddhist studying meditation and mindfulness and it got me nowhere. I'd have the odd good experience once every few years and that's about it.

Bruce Finnie It's probably because she's hitting the nail on the head about self-awareness. You mightn't possess any, and so it's all going over your head. I've lived with depression for 43 years and she sounds like a guru to me.

Really??? You can't follow? She makes a lot of sense to me. Perhaps because I've been around chronically depressed people and ive been familiar with the mindfulness cognitive approach. For me, it was utterly insightful
