  • With the Sharks winning the NHL Draft lottery on Tuesday, they'll likely be taking Macklin Celebrini with the first overall pick. Just how good is Celebrini and how quickly can he make an impact in the NHL? TSN Director of Scouting Craig Button joins 7-Eleven That's Hockey to discuss.

It's a fallacy to say that the Sharks have been a terrible team for a long time. I think people have forgotten that the Sharks were playoff teams and (mostly) Cup contenders from like 2000 - 2019 with 17 seasons of at least 90 points from 2000 - 2019.

Doug Wilson screwed them… Over commitment on contracts …. Hanging onto certain players too long like Thornton and especially Burns…. And letting Pavs walk in favor of EK65… I wasn’t liking what Grier was doing as far as getting rid of Marquee players like Meyer and Hertl but now I like a lot…. He’s not doing what Wilson did by hanging onto certain players for too long and he’s acquiring draft picks and young assets….The Sharks have two first round picks this year… #1 and #14 (Pitt for EK65) …. They haven’t made the playoffs in 5 years… but Grier understands it’s a rebuild and is now going after draft picks and building through the draft….. This kid they are going to draft #1 is going to elevate the Franchise for a long time? They may even be better than the old Sharks? We’ll see?

We were contenders for 20 years, we've been bad for 5 seasons. Now we have started a great rebuild. Our Top 6 of the future has Macklin, Smith, Eklund, Musty and Zetterlund with guys like Bystedt, Edstrom, Guschin and Bordeleau to fill out part of the bottom 6. Need some defenders and a legit goalie of the future and we are on the way to being contenders for another 15 years

If Couture can come back next year and not be a shell of himself, then the young guys will have 2 centermen, with him and Granlund, to learn from and be mentored by. If they hadn't traded Hertl at the deadline then they would faily deep at that spot and be able to form some sort of offensive game but alas, they don't.
Their issue will be defense and goaltending, they should be able to score a little next year and not have to use 4th line players on the second and 3rd lines.
