10 Worst Games Of 1996

- Ooh yeah, we are back with yet another year’s worth of horrible titles. Fortunately, however, 1996 actually wasn’t that bad of a year, certainly when it comes to video games. On the awesome end of the gaming scale there was Super Mario 64, Tomb Raider, Quake, Tekken 2, Diablo, and Resident Evil, and that’s barely scratching the surface. Even those that were in receipt of lower review scores weren’t that bad. Still, there were games released in 1996 that were worse than most, and we’re here to share them with you today. Once again, we’ve looked into the GameRankings archives to find the titles with the worst review scores, and as always, they must have had at least seven professional reviews in order to qualify. Here are the 10 Worst Games of 1996.

Can you put all these "worst games" by year in one separate playlist? :) it would be nice for re-watching them
you know that YOU can do that, right?

I enjoyed Beyond the Beyond. It's difficult, and it's more like an RPG from the late 1980s than from the mid 1990s, but it certainly isn't anything close to terrible.
Agreed.
Definitely not a bad game and probably not deserving to be on this list imo. Was it great, no not really. But was it the worst of 1996, no way.
I remember loving beyond the beyond. My friend let me borrow it in like 98/99 and i kept/still have the save data on my memory card in case i ever cane across the game again lol
Beyond the Beyond was a good game, but the encounter rate was too damn high from what I can remember
I found it exceedingly tedious and with a life system that punished you for trying to grind. If I wanted this animation and a good game I could've just played shining force 1 or 2.
Gotta say, 1996 was a banger of a year in games when all but one game was still over 50%.
The video's a bit flawed because you have to remember 1996 is also the year Bubsy 3D cursed the world, but it didn't have enough professional reviews to qualify for the list.
That's just because gaming publications don't know how to use a rating scale properly. There were *plenty* of games released in the year that should be below 50%.
I enjoyed Cruisin USA on the N64 a lot. But I was also 7 at the time
It's hard to overstate exactly how much people loved the arcade game.
Yeah wtf easily one of my favorite games back then. The whole trilogy was rad.
Hell yeah. I even had the little peddle and steering wheel set for it. Good times.
Because it was good. I got it with my n64 for Xmas that year
@@Yourmomgoestocolledge I mean IDK about "good" but it was as close as we could get to the arcade. People underestimate how much that mattered back then. Frame rate dips? Slightly off controls? Doesn't matter, playing Cruis'n USA at home. The MK home releases were really similar for a very specific reason. We could play that shit at home! It really didn't matter if it was slightly laggy or buggy. That's not what we were looking at back then.
You get it.
Cruis'n USA was one of my favorite games back then on my N64. Fight me.
Me too.
Same! I played so much with my friend Mike back in the day.
I returned it
At the end of each race in Cruis'n USA, why does the lady always say David? Who's David?
We all had fun with Cruis'n USA. I don't know what this video is talking about.
Ross Scott did an amazing Phantasmagoria 2 playthrough thing. That game is amazing
That painting guy?
@@nickgarcia1292no, that's Bob Ross. Ross Scott is the Freeman's Mind guy.
I'm here to defend Puzzle of Flesh, haha!
I ironically liked it back in college when I discovered it, but it's quickly become a favorite of mine. Gotta love it having well written characters. Trevor was really a groundbreaking character for the time. But yeah, that mouse and wallet puzzle is goofy.
Also Dark Forces. Dark Forces is awesome. The PS1 version may be a downgrade, but I still loved it as a kid.
Also the final puzzle (the titular Puzzle of Flesh) is horrifically awful, completely non-intuitive, and leads to a pair of hilariously disappointing, crappy endings. But yeah: Trevor's great, and it's amazing to see actual bisexual and polyamory broached as topics as something other than "being unable to make up your sexuality."
Sad about the depictions of mental health treatment and...I mean the rest of the gameplay, really.
@@Alucard-A-La-Carte oh yes. OH YES. The last puzzle is the stuff of legend in terms of badness. I enjoy it otherwise.
@@this_connor_guy The actor who plays Curtis actually has a CZcams (and website that's designed to work like the game) where he does interviews and the like. Volume 3 is an interview with the Actor of Trevor which was a good listen.

Cruis’N USA sold well because it was a budget release. It was £30-£40 whereas most N64 games were £70 at the time. I actually really liked it, I’d been looking forward to it coming out and just ignored the poor reviews. One strange thing was that at Woolworths where I bought it, they had a policy at the checkout where they told you it was non-returnable, presumably because of the reviews.
That's a lie.
At no point in time did most N64 games cost 70 quid.
@@incumbentvinyl9291 Yes they were, I literally remember getting Turok and it was £70, or if not then £69.99.

Oh yes worst games time! I've watched a 10 worst games of x year video before and I'm gonna give it everything I've got
The PC Version of "Z" on sale on Steam is sadly a re-release based on the mobile port. If you want that real "Z"-feel, you will have to find your old disc or buy one on ebay.
Great videos. Also I really like your background music. Such chill vibe.
Your videos are actually the best content on CZcams rn I've watched them all. Will be buying some merch soon
I remember watching a Phantasmagoria 2 let's play years ago from a guy who has since disappeared into the ether, and the game was interesting at the very least
Do you possibly mean Spoony? Cause dude had his issues but was a great content creator
God I miss Spoony’s vids
Yeah, it was Spoony. I really enjoyed him at the time, idk if his videos have aged well, but I remember laughing until I was crying and couldn't breathe a few times, and his Ultima videos were really good.
But he really just kind of went off the deep end and I think he probably wasn't great towards the other people at TGWTG/Channel Awesome based on how his side of everything all fell apart.
@@scootinand his Ultima and Phantasmagoria videos still hold up, they're still amazing. But yeah, dude went off the deep end. Severe depression and bi-polar 2 has ruined him beyond ever making a comeback at this point. It's a damn shame
@@SquareGoGamers I loved Spoony!!!! His Final Fantasy X and XIII are some of the best memories watching game reviews
You didn't finish Sports Time....have you watched basketball before? Have you played a basketball game? Whether yes or no, are you going to give it everything you got? How am I supposed to know these things if you don't tell me?
Mortal Kombat Trilogy specifically on N64 is actually my favorite MK of all time. The 2nd game I ever played (first being OoT) as a toddler the blood scared the hell out of me so my parents would go to the options and turn off the blood. I was also terrified of Sheeva. I don't understand how people consider the n64 version the worst. I played the PSX version a few years ago and they don't even feel the same, PSX version feels off
I poured many hours into MKT in N64 way back when. Still love it, especially when you input the debugging code. It's so much fun.
And it's still the only version ever that had Khameleon as far as I know
The spoony ones lets play of Phantasmagoria is epic.
A random spoony reference in the wild..? We *do* live in strange times.
Oh wow that’s a throwback. I wonder how he’s doing these da- Oh…
@@HFRC56 Phantasmagoria 1 is epic but not Phantasmagoria 2 A Puzzle of Flesh
I was a big PC gamer in the 90s and love the 1st phantasmagoria game a lot. The second one was so weird. People are being murdered and then you find out it's aliens at the end? If they would have done a similar story about a demonic spirit that inhabits your husband and then tries to kill you for the entire game - yet at the end you slice his head open with a lopsided guillotine to avoid death. What a game the first game was!
You probably didn't get the story the exact way you should, in Phantasmagoria 2. But you can always try again now and I'm sure you'll get the AWESOME plot (and twist) it has in the end. :)
Oh I liked Phantasmagoria 2. It was pretty fun and campy. It's dumb in the best way possible
Phantasmagoria 2 is having a resurgence lately since the lead actor has been interviewing the cast and crew involved and digging up the old shooting script. It's getting a lot more love now than in '96.
To be fair it's not very fun as a game and pretty bland overall but the great production value for the time make it worth to play/watch a let's play at least once.
Spoony does a great lets play on Phantasmagoria 2.
Still have never herd of it

I loved Dark Forces, and all of its sequels and spin-offs.
The PC version of the original is a true classic!
Yeah this is my first and last video from this.👌
Puzzle of Flesh was a good game.

@@WheresPoochie It sounds like A Hellraiser Sequel
I enjoyed playing NBA In The Zone 2 and I still do to this day. You were able to change the control scheme and that’s what I did to play it better.
What is the background music throughout this video??? It's so chill and I love it. I want to be able to play it while my students work in class. Thanks!
Whats the name of the song you use during the Top 10 list?
Duude, I not only played almost all of these games but I have 6 of them still on my shelf hahahah
1996's worst games seem better than a lot of the other years.
Puzzle of Flesh was good.
Great reference with the TARDIS. 1996 was the year Paul McGann became the 8th Doctor.
Worst games of 1996.
*Bubsy 3D is not included*
I have it on 'good authority' that Neil Buchanan and Marseille approve that cheeky reference
Don't know if I should be pleased or disappointed in myself that I recognised the thumbnail from phantasmagoria II instantly...
I played Beyond the Beyond, it wasn't amazing... but it's not a 44. 60 at least
I low key liked it. It inspired Golden Sun later
07:13 - It looks like Phantasmagoria features the Angry Video Game Nerd!! XD
Loved the Neil Buchanan bit, very funny!
Mortal Kombat Trilogy is unironically my favorite game of 1996 but I understand why people didn’t like it or were tired of the same Mortal Kombat formula by that point. It was basically my dream game though lmao.
I don't know. I don't ever remember critics putting heavy emphasis on frame rate back in those days. So seeing so many games on these lists criticised for frame rate issues raises questions.
It definitely was talked about, usually not in terms of "FPS" but in terms of the game being "smooth" or "choppy."
Beyond The Beyond? Isn't that where Adam Sandler got that universal remote control from Christopher Walken in the movie "Click"?
0:52 Pretty ridiculous to put Sonic 3D blast in the same boat with Bubsy 3D
The year is 2022, you just got your doordash delivery, the only time you leave your room, only to do research on what the worst games of 1996 are. The day is now complete
Do these game scores count many of the magazines that were around at the time or just the handful of video game websites from the time?
If they weren't counting magazines, then Bubsy 3d might have made the list.
I really liked the port of Cruisin' USA for the N64.
Lol love the Simon Miller appearances
Crusin USA was one of the first games i played as a 5 year old way back when on the console. always thought it was cool back then. Hilarious to see it all these years later as an atrocity. i could probably still pick it up and get some nostalgia from it. good enough.
As a kid I fuckin loved FMV games, now not so much. Fahrenheit on Sega CD, Fox Hunt for PS1 and Phantasmagoria killed hours for me growing up.👍
I actually enjoyed Andretti Racing, Z, and Crus'N USA then again I was younger then and me and my friend laughed our butts off when we lost a mission in Z and got called a ahole for it.
Samson's curse and the fact that running away from 90% of all battles was a more viable tactic to the game then fighting, are the two biggest faults of Beyond the Beyond.
Why does Puzzle of Flesh look like an Angry Video Game Nerd episode?
You know what came out in 1996? Bubsy 3D
By following the rules you set up, this list has nothing to do with reality. These are - just games. Disappointing to some, playable. I can create a list of 10 fighting games from 1996 worse than every game on this list. There's only one game on this list I don't know and maybe it belongs but I doubt it.
It's not just that you don't put in the work to understand 1996, it's bad info.
My guess is they were going by European releases? It wasn't released in Europe until late 1997. Did they do a 1997 video?
They did show it in the intro as being in the bin, so I'm guessing it didn't have at least 7 reviews? And no it isn't in the 1997 list either, I checked.
@@TotalAnimeFreak456 That's the point - the 7 reviews rule doesn't work for games from before reviews were commonly available on the internet.
Most games won't have 7 reviews, reviews will likely have to have been added in a more self-selected fashion, and many of those reviews will not be from sources from the time making their value less.
It's not the worst games, it's the lowest 10 scores from a questionable set of reviews on maybe 10%-20% of major games.
It's not bad info though is it? If TTJ said here's the worst games from 1996 and that was it then it's bad info. There are pre cursors setup across the series which means that the info provided is accurate. Your issue is with the format. That format exists for about three different reasons, most notably because these were games a number of people had experience with.
Except Bubsy 3D is actually good and the best game in the Bubsy series. I've played all of the Bubsy games, and the one I enjoyed the most is by far Bubsy 3D. The controls are a little weird, but they are very responsive, and once you memorize the layout the game itself is amazing, and as opposed to the other three 90s Bubsy games, 3D is very forgiving in its difficulty.
Btw I beat Bubsy 3D around 45 times.
Beyond the beyond was a grind for sure, we pretty much only played it because we didn't have much for the PSX at the time, very slow, very unremarkable, and a random encounter every 4-8 steps it seemed .. fun fact, it was made by the guys that made the Shining series, Shining Force, etc
Phantasmagoria 1 wasn't nearly as bad a it's sequel, and probably just as bad as Gabriel Knight 2.
I really enjoyed Beyond The Beyond. I started playing it when I got it home and it didn't leave my PlayStation until it was completed. It was challenging but not anything I would call overly difficult. The story was fairly generic but it was enough to keep me interested and wanting to see it through. It may not be the most amazing RPGs ever created but over the years, I've finished 3 or 4 more times at least.
Do you play Shining games before?

I am currently looking for a copy of Z. looks fun :)
A steep difficulty curve actually means the learning was very fast.
My best friend and myself enjoyed Cruisn USA (and Cruisn World) a lot. But we were like 6 or 7 at that time
I don't think anyone who bought Cruisn' USA in '96 was disappointed really, we all knew what it was and how it played as a mindless arcade game. Also it was one of only a handful of games actually available for the system that year, so most people were just happy to have a game at all.
It might be rose colored glasses I’m looking through, but I remember Cruis’n USA being awesome!
The problem with Contra: Legacy of War (For me at least) was it strayed too far from what made the series great before. That, and the "3D" didn't really help it here. It wouldn't be until the PS2 that polygons would be enough to support a game like Contra.
Sportstime on a list? What a day
You kept saying “arcade version” in the MK Trilogy section…
…There is no arcade version of Trilogy.
Contra legacy of war was also released on the Saturn aswel

The thing about something like Dark Forces is, that if you have it on PC or Mac, why would you even bother with the PlayStation version. The console version was made for those of us that didn't have $500-$1000 to spend on a PC or Mac. And for a console port of a game that was specifically designed for PC, it's pretty damn good.
I played the hell out of Cruisn USA! 🤣
It's nice to see a picture of Simon
Is that Simon Miller from Whar Culture on Captain America's body?
The fact these lists just draw their 'opinions' from Metacritic scores proves their is no real profession judgments happening here. Metacritic is the corporate worlds opinions...not gamers. Just because a game didn't sell well...or 'professional critics' (ha) had a bad first impression of a game doesn't make it bad.
Andretti Racing on Sega Saturn has to be one of the worst ports that I've ever experienced on that console. The PS version is alright, but the Saturn version looks flat out broken.
Outtakes from the "Plumbers Don't Wear Ties" episode of #AVGN begin at 7:12 lol
I've still got my copy of Andretti Racing on the Saturn. Was a pretty decent title for the time.
I actually really enjoyed Cruisin USA as a kid. I played it a lot with my mom and my granny.
Street Fighter Alpha 2 Arcade and PS1 released in 1996 was so fun
Coming from someone that doesn't like racing games that aren't Mario Kart, or Road Rash, Cruisin' USA and Cruisin' World were lots of fun.
Thank GOODNESS Bubsy 3D isn't here, because it's not a bad game at all! It's genuinely one of my all-time favorites both on PS1 and in general. The controls are a little weird, but once you get used to them, Bubsy 3D is a total blast!
And if you think I'm trolling then let me say this straight: I actually like Bubsy 3D and my opinion matters just as much as anyone else's opinion.
I sincerely want you to do an episode of “What Bubsy 3D Means to Me”. If anything it’ll CERTAINLY stir the algorithm!!
@@daisybutinhertennisoutfit I actually really wanna do a "Why I love Bubsy 3D" video, maybe when I have enough time heh
Waiting for the "how dare you rank -insert game- so low!" when its done through what reviewers at the time thought, not Triplejump's opinion 🤣
I’m genuinely surprised I didn’t see the ps1 port of NHL 97 here, that game is one of the biggest examples of why the “make 2D game but in 3D” mentality of this generation was so flawed (but it does border on being so bad that it’s good).
Looking at Contra i feel sad that everybody felt the need to jump to 3d at that time,oh if only some titles stayed in 2d just for one more game they could have become classics.Mortal Kombat 4,Earthworm Jim 3d,Lion King:Simba's Mighty Adventure,Alladin Nasira's Revenge and Contra LoW,these could have been something special, but instead their place are on the lists lik this one

I am one one of those owners of Cruis n USA but I didn't mind the crappy frame rate since I remember playing so many games on my PC at 20fps I got use to it. ATI RAGE PRO can hardly do Direct 3D in a Compaq Presario so my N64 felt more powerful

Still have my Playstation USA version of Beyond The Beyond.
It was always going to come in for a lot of hindsight flak. Due to FF7 being released a year later and showing just what could actually be done with the Playstation.
