Elysium is writer-director Neill Blomkamp's follow-up to District 9, with Matt Damon and exosuits and futuristic weapons. It was a letdown, though, thanks to one key thing: it had the wrong story/plot. So in today's Anatomy of a Failure, let's see what that means for Elysium and what to keep in mind when choosing the plot for your movie to explore your movie's special world with.

    Elysium (2013)
In a future in which the privileged reside on an Earth-orbiting space station named Elysium and the less fortunate live on the surface of the blighted, overpopulated planet below, one man dares to defy the strict anti-immigration laws that separate the two disparate worlds in order to save all of mankind in this visceral sci-fi action thriller from District 9 director Neill Blomkamp. The year is 2154, and the division between social classes has grown wider than ever before. As the rich enjoy a life of luxury and access to cutting-edge medical technology on Elysium, the rest of the human race contend with poverty, crime, and disease on the surface of planet Earth. Meanwhile, hard-line immigration laws ensure that only those who have been explicitly approved will ever set foot on the elusive paradise in the stars. 36-year-old Max (Matt Damon) lives in an L.A. shantytown and earns his living by working on an Armadyne assembly line. He's had a rough past, but he's struggling to stay on the right side of the law when he realizes that his only hope for survival after being exposed to deadly radiation is to elysium exosuit scene heist scene everything wrong with elysium honest trailer watch elysium full movie online free 4k clip hd best moments best sci-fi movies worst sci-fi movies reach Elysium. Should Max succeed, he will strike a major blow for equality in the eyes of his fellow surface dwellers; should he fail, it will mean certain death. In his quest to become the hero who can restore the balance between the rich and the poor, however, Max must first do battle with Elysium's hawkish Secretary of Defense Delacourt (Jodie Foster), who has devoted her entire career to maintaining that division, and whose key enforcer Kruger (Sharlto Copley) is notorious for his brutal tactics in driving out illegals. With the fates of millions hanging in the balance, Max sets his sights on Elysium and never looks back.

    District 9 (2009)
Director Neill Blomkamp teams with producer Peter Jackson for this tale of extraterrestrial refugees stuck in contemporary South Africa. It's been 28 years since the aliens made first contact, but there was never any attack from the skies, nor any profound technological revelation capable of advancing our society. Instead, the aliens were treated as refugees. They were the last of their kind, and in order to accommodate them, the government of South Africa set up a makeshift home in District 9 as politicians and world leaders debated how to handle the situation. As the humans begin to grow wary of the unwelcome intruders, a private company called Multi-National United (MNU) is assigned the task of controlling the aliens. But MNU is less interested in the aliens' welfare than attempting to understand how their weaponry works. Should they manage to make that breakthrough, they will receive tremendous profits to fund their research. Unfortunately, the highly advanced weaponry requires alien DNA in order to be activated. When MNU field operative Wikus van der Merwe (Sharlto Copley) is exposed to biotechnology that causes his DNA to mutate, the tensions between the aliens and the humans intensifies. Wikus is the key to unlocking the alien's technology, and he quickly becomes the most wanted man on the planet. Ostracized and isolated, Wikus retreats to District 9 in a desperate bid to shake his dogged pursuers.~Jason Buchanan

These orphans are unable to afford the treatment and only have two days before the poison kills them, so they must break into a house in Elyisum to illegally access the machine. Usually wanting to live is the starting driving goal, and as the story progresses stakes increase to add gravity and weight to the character's actions, if you keep "I want to live" as the main focus through and through you gotta either do more with it or add bigger stakes than it, one life on top of another is falling short, making everyone a citizen of elysium should've been the original stake-rising goal, then you could make it so that there's a twist, like that Elysium is just a smaller space station, that humans from up there had been expanding to other planets and had disregarded earth as a whole, say leaving it in charge of the president while the intergalactic government rules over several colonies that span from earth to the entire milky way, and he has not only to bring down the magic medic capsules but he also ends up exposing the crimes of the corrupt government to the expanded humanity, raising awareness and bringing change to earth turning it a patrimony of humanity as the cradle of humankind.

It is in my opinion. He argues that the protagonist has "no life" to return to once healed, which is wrong, because even tho his life sucks, he wants to make it better, as he doesn't want to get involved with crime and wants to "climb the ladder" at his job.
Even without this, not wanting to die is motivation enough for anyone who's put in that position.

But you put everything so clear, concise, and entertaining the way cinema can be. If anything, why do you think filmmakers get this stuff wrong so often? Is it that some productions are so big the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing? To me, the mysteries of cinema shouldn't be that mysterious because they're in the movies themselves which are recorded and can be played back, that's the whole point isn't it?

Giving him a grander purpose, developing the girl and her mum a little more, interconnecting the overthrowing plot with the reason why the protagonist was rushed and injured, reducing the severity of the entire overthrowing thing and giving a proper reason as to why they can’t have the healing pods on earth.
Doing all this could have made this one of the better sci-fi films.

The why to everything is “rich people are evil” with no basis in any reality or world, including the world the movie creates.

I remember when i first saw Elysium i was pretty young, a teenager, and it was probably the first R rated film my dad took me to see actually. I remember feeling like the story was “random” that it was just kinda this contrived series of events to justify the world the movie created.
