I wish the characters still showed some blood on the their damaged bodies in DBS... The fights would look so much more brutal.
Happy new year, man.
Surprisingly they did in this special. And happy new year bro!
We have that in the manga at least.
Oh hey not kenny
@@cheese6929 My name is not Not Kenny...😤
@@dlbutters7164 ok not kenny
I just wish the remastered really captured the grit and brutality aesthetic. The lack of blood and sweat on the character models doesn't sell it as a climatic battle.
@ESparda A.K.A.悪魔の死神 such a downgrade
Indeed it does not
@ESparda A.K.A.悪魔の死神 yessssssssssssssssss
Takahashi was amazing in the remastered one but I just like the original more. The animation was a bit more expressive
Wish the flying kick looked more epic.
Same the expressions on Freeza and Goku were amazing
That was for the Yamamuro designs, if Takahashi use his style like a Dbsuper Broly that remake could be more epic
My thoughts exactly
It couldve been better if they brought black the blood.
My biggest complaint for the new version is Goku’s hair look like Bananas, while the original look like hair or something that is flowy like fabric.
But that’s not animation, more design/character sheet thing I guess...
I absolutely adore how the new version handles Goku’s kick after he jumps off the wall, it’s soooo cool and dynamic
5:02 Shimanukis Art and Animation definetly was the biggest highlight for me.
And that Expression of Freeza just awesome
He's my favourite Z animator alongside with z yamamuro
facts
goku's spin after the reverse kick was dope
In my way Takahashi and Yamamuro are great together. I really liked the colours were so vibrant and Tate would have been great too due to his interesting fighting style animations.
Nah, Takahashi is great without Yamamuro, why do you think his work looked so much better in TOP and Broly? Yamamuro wasn't correcting him.
Think of how much better this special would've looked without Yamamuro corrections.
@@jasonone8726 I think you misjudge but you gotta remember that Takahashi's style was quite close to Yamamuro, Naotoshi Shida etc. So I think that the reason why his work looks different in the Broly movie is because it had a different director and a different animation supervisor. I don't hate Yamamuro's style but I hate his colour palette
@@Gaming_Hub_UK Nah, Takahash's work already look great before that movie, just look at episode 114 of Super, Goku vs the Universe 6 Saiyans, in that arc, besides the final fight, he wasn't being corrected. Takahashi's style is close to prime Yamamuro, not his modern stuff. Also, Takahashi designs in Broly were very off model to Shintani's, their art looks completely different, so he had nothing to do with it, if you thought that's why it improved there.
@@jasonone8726 your ignorance is astonishing. Takahashi is literally old school yamamuro
@@AyyyyJayyyy I know that, I'm talking about modern Yamamuro, his work is bad now. Takahashi is what he used to be back in Z.
I kinda wished they switched back Goku’s hair in the remastered version, idk, I’ve always had the headcanon that the blocky white hair we saw Goku, Trunks, and Vegeta have at first was the first grade, especially because when Goku and Gohan master Super Saiyan, and have super saiyan grade 4, their hair becomes the more detailed lined version. Even if it’s never explicitly said.
I honestly like when they had the less detailed version much more.
Yeah, me too.
I think it's a case of less vs more, it's better not to clog up the panel/screen with too much detail, we get the picture without seeing every strand of hair sticking up. I like your headcanon but then we also saw the blockier white-blond style even after they mastered SSJ, we saw it right after Goku and Gohan came out of the time chamber and when Gohan was training for the pre-buu saga tournament. But that can all be chalked up to a difference in animation style. I personally would have kept the more detailed hair for SSJ2, it would differentiated that form a bit more.
Pretty fair opinion. I love the animation of the second one and the style and gritty look of the first.
The style??
@@KuramaGeometryDash the art style
@@boxinthejack2166 buu > dbs > cell > namek > saiyan, the style used in the namek arc isnt that good for me
@@KuramaGeometryDash I think if dbs was drawn in Z style (completely done by hand) the notorious animation flaws and bad design choices would be non existent. and seeing how over time in Z the style gradually got better, if dbs was in Z style I think it would be better than the buu saga
@@iaminconstantpain4330 wdym z style? Z literally has multiple different art styles throughout
I just love that punch from goku in the original. It just feels iconic and freza falls down in pain. Just iconic.
Honestly this is a tough decision. The remastered version looks really good, and the animation is great, Takahashi did an amazing job. The problem though is that it lacks emotion. The modern art style looks good, but it’s almost artificial in a way. Maybe it’s because of nostalgia, but I gotta say, the original might be better simply because of that rough look, and the animation isn’t that bad either. There are times where you can really feel it. The iconic gut punch also sells it for me
Has nothing to do with Nostalgia, and people have to realize liking the older style isn't because you're nostalgic it's because it is ACTUALLY better.
When you look at the 2 styles in the video, Goku's face looks flat. It doesn't look as if he has any sorta dimensions on his face.
It's VERY flat. The hair is also quite stiff, with no flow to it, it appears to be like a Lego wig ontop of his head.
The lack of definition in the muscles, reduced depth in the characters and the overall muted colors of the scene were a bit of a let down.
The impact was decent but in the case of Original Z style the characters have depth.
Goku's face doesn't look flat and has some semblance of depth. Notably the way they drew in the jaw/cheeks. It sold it. The hair isn't just stiff, it actually flows.
Example: Freeza going for the punch, Goku ducking.
Original: hair goes backwards, following the fist that is going through it.
Super remastered: hair just stays there as the fist enters with no movement.
The modern artstyle is absolute garbage. I’m glad we’re probably gonna have Shintani’s style from this DBS Broly and forward judging by the praise he got from fans and animators and the criticisms from fans and animators that Yamamuro got.
@@GeekedOutNeckbeard The speed in the Super remaster is just right
@@leonardofarias8843 has nothing to do with the speed of the fight, which is more true to the original Manga.
But the character models are just plastic garbage. The scene in the original is superior because of a number of factors. If you prefer manga-true animated scenes, by all means enjoy this! But for me, it's more than just that.
The modern one looks synthetic, the way the characters do not blend to the background, the lighting and shading which feels plastic, and the intensity. Yes, it goes quicker, but the reduced facial expressions and injuries holds it back so much. It is worse.
That short animation was my fav scene out of all DBS. Why? It displayed real emotion, struggle and every move felt like there was force behind it, the colors, voice acting and the soundtrack was great. Wish they kept doing dbs like that.
If they had more time on the show, we probably could've got more like that.
Hisada and Shimanuki had such tasty solid drawing in Z, there was always so much volume in their character art whether it was with Maeda or Yamamuro's sheets.
I believe the biggest problems with the remaster come from the extremely thin outlines and the colour usage.
The animation is stellar but some of that expressiveness and grit from the original is missed when there's no texture in the pen and no thickness to emphasise said texture.
It also feels like the sky is strangely detached from the scene. No sharp brown or green shadows to really give things depth.
The original is better for its brutality. It just feels primal, and I love it.
Very complete and insightful breakdown!
Been seeing your channel get recommended more lately. Whatever you’re doing, clearly you’re doing it well. Subbed.
Thanks mate!
love the breakdown its helping me alot in my own animations im working on
This channel is really showing me a new way of looking at the series.
lovely channel, keep up the quality vids big man
love the content man, you're easily my favorite dragon ball youtuber
thanks mate!
Either fine. I wish super when it was on looked more the remastered Freeza scene than how it was, though super did start looking better towards the end and episode 131 did look amazing
Ep 131 looked phenomenal
I think the start of Super, the first 3 episodes, showed how good it could've looked if the animators weren't rushed.
I definitely prefer the original. The thing I love about this fight is that it's two incredibly powerful characters battling it out on a doomed planet. I feel like the battle damage, the animation and the atmosphere (especially the red sky) really get that acoss far better in the original version.
You are the CZcams channel I never knew I needed 🤟
As fan animator of dbz .....i love ur vids bro....keep up the great work👍👍👍
I preferred the colors and atmosphere of the old. It had a very final battle esque feel to it. However, new's animation and choreography feels more true to the kinect feel of the manga's fight.
I love the way you break down the choreography of the fight scenes.
I like that judo chop frieza did to gokus neck that had barely any effect.
I'd pay to see a Shintani cut. He has been improving so fucking much lately.
Great Vid! But just throwing this out their you should do a video analysing naotoshi shida and his style, going over the shapes he uses for shading, his poses, and overall approach to characters and animation, just throwing that idea out their, also is it just me or does the frame at 2:34 look like a modern naotoshi shida pose with the crazy hands?
Brooo you read my mind haha, for a while I've been thinking of doing a breakdown on his style similar to the masunaga video and the shapes he uses for shading was going to be my first point! Maybe I should make it sooner rather than later...
I never noticed this before but frieza is really tough. For a guy who was supposed to be a spoiled tyrant that was never really challenged throughout his life he takes a lot punishment and keeps going. It really contrast with his behavior in his first form as a guy that would even chase vegeta himself when he took the dragonballs
I don't care what anyone says the original will always be iconic. However, Takahashi is on another level his animation is so fluid and really makes the scene so much more dramatic and entertaining than it was supposed to be, a very unique art style. Also many chief kisses to his art style. It's always consistent. I don't think I've ever seen any of his characters off the model. Lastly, his perspective angles and shots of the characters are what really tie everything together, that's my favorite aspect about his animation. He understands the perspective and angles of the characters very well.
great videoooo
I know right 4:29 DBZ’s sound affects are just amazing
6:13 That kick was nuts
I really dont care for the plastic look the characters have now a-days. Also would like to see more blood in super to make the fights seem more brutal and dire.
Blood is still in the manga, plus Shintani will be the new character designer.
@@jasonone8726 is it confirmed?

@@AyyyyJayyyy nice
I kinda prefer Takahashi over shintani
Nice video! How did u get the renewed fight in hd? Been looking for ages
After all those years i still enjoy rewatching the original dragonball z series...
Guess what i dont rewatch.
You guessed right.
ion fuck with the original
I feel like the remade version had nicer art and did the more direct adaptations of the Manga better, but the changes made in the Anime like the impact of that punch and the sky's color changing and the Anime-exclusive stuff just edges it out.
This is one of those times where I much prefer the new version. Takahashi and Otsuka did a wonderful job bringing the original manga panels and choreography to life, much more than the old take, even if Yamamuro's style ain't my cup of tea.
Always have and always will love the original animation style. Even with the all the uncorrected mistakes for some reason that old style felt more... real! I'm not even sure why. I have always disliked the modern DB style, the only exception being the Broly movie which hopefully will be the new normal.... though unlikely.
I love your videos
I think Yuya Takahashi was really making the animation look like the manga.
What i liked about the older original version was the original SSJ Hair, it wasnt meant to be spiky cool as if you applied hair gel to it, it was meant to look like actual fire, when Goku "killed" Freeza and we saw his regret face, what really made the scene so epic was his hair flowing looking like actual golden flames, it is simply impossible to get that aesthetic with the changes they made to the SSJ hair in the cell saga.
The remade version looks too glossy and CG, the OG Z version has that film grain and imperfections in the art that give it a natural look...hated everything about the way Super was animated. Thank you for this break down video man!
*Dbs Epispde 5 will remember that*
@Zayaan Mohammed haven’t looked because of this exact comment I made
The newer animation was very cool, I loved that spin Goku did before landing. But I just can’t get behind that art style 🤷 it’s just too plastic-y.
Takashi's work is smooth and you can feel the speed and impacts, but the atmosphere and artistic choice of the original airing still wins me over.
If there was a mix between the style of the original and the animation and dynamism of the Remaster,it would be amazing. Hehe.
Nice video
I like both of them but for nostalgic reasons the like the og alot better also I love classic dragon balls art it looks less plastic and stiff
Keep in mind - this new one is not a weekly series' piece!
This piece is a part of movie special edition - and this was just a flashback piece, that literally ends where the video is stops.
It is paced like that and drawn like that with A THEATRICAL MOVIE BUDGET AND PRODUCTION and it supposed to be a HIGHLY PACED flashback sequence.
And considering ALL THIS - it looks like THAT!
It barely holds any ground against the original piece, it's overdragged and sluggishly paced already, and it's have almost no any work with the surroundings or anything except for main characters movements - that are executed LIKE THAT, with such problems I pointed out already.
This is A MOVIE SUPPOSED TO BE HIGHLY PACED PIECE that barely holds anything against A WEEKLY SERIES' EPISODE.
Idk bout sluggishly paced man. The main problem was that it was somewhat too fast-paced and so the big moments like Frieza getting gut-punched were glossed over rather than emphasized further like in Z.
@@forgottenrelics1197 well, if you going to put OUT some unnecessary slow-mo - there is going to be more than enough space for giving a better impact for the main punch in the gut.
3:14 that slow motion is hilirous
Thats why i love what they did in dokkan, its basically the remake, but in the old style, just perfect
Cool.
Imo, takeuchi's art was great, but his animation... Hisada's supervision was just awesome and Tate created amazing movement without sacrificing art (cof cof...)
On the other side, takahashi's animation and art was great but yamamuro designs dont fit in such a dark scene.
Z backgrounds were way better also.
How does modern tate sacrifice art for animation
@@akhil6826 by almost making stick-man animation with a lot of smear frames giving it a good sensation of movement
I think a part of the problem is the shading on the new version it's to artificial and look like moving action figures if the shading was less plastic I think the remaster would have the edge.
Well, such problem is the thing I wasn't even noticing now, it's already like the basis of all of DBS art and ALL episodes have it. And they're all have bad quality in this regard. This alone makes them horrible.
Just by that I can't name any DBS era art good - they're all bad.
@@SuperSaiyanDate There's some episodes of where they scrap the plastic highlights and those episodes look very good, but these episodes are few and between.
@@SuperSaiyanDate Gonna ignore a good chunk of Goku Black and TOP? The broly movie looked even better
@@ihatemotionblur_3255 how?
The Goku Black arc is one of the worst.
ToP is nothing better also.
Broly movie looked better than those of course - just because this is a movie with a movie budget and production time.
@@SuperSaiyanDate You definitely haven't watched the TOP if you think it's bad.
What i dont like about the newer one is Yamamoru's correction
I dont like his art style in super
This part of Goku vs frieza is my favorite part of the whole fight 🔥
I'd say the new one is animated a lot better
older version is really good unlike the digital latest animation feels like dry and lifeless
So many details in animation back then, something I wish Super would improve on. Supers animation just feels static to me.
I think the "static" feel might be more down to the character designs or perhaps the limited animation/reused cuts in some episodes due to Supers terrible schedule. Because outside that there where some splendid animated sequences such as Naotoshi Shida's cut of Jiren vs UI Goku or Naoki Tate's cut of SSB Goku vs Frieza. I encourage you to check out some AMV's of them amongst many of Supers other staff :)
czcams.com/video/UNVWtma-5I4/video.html&ab_channel=DBanimators
@@forgottenrelics1197 My favorite DBS episode was episode 122. Hands down best drawn and animated in the series besides the final battle and team battle with Jiren.
Original for me. The remaster was just that, a crispy redraw of the original fight with smoother animation and just being shorter. But the original captured the emotion better. The remaster just feels like something someone had to do and just did the "norm"
2:36 I can't be the only one who saw Josuke in the flashes
I see Okuyasu.
I'm pretty sure you two are the only people who saw Jojo characters in those flashes 💀
Damn they are both good. Takahashi shoudve save that kind of animation for remaking super season 1 and 2.
You make it sounds like he'll do the whole show, plus this was 2 years before Super went off air.
are you going to analyse dokkan battle's art?
The problem is Takahashi got corrected by Yamamouro. Think the opinions would be different if it was just him
Modern Yamamuro = washed
I overall liked the Original fight more. Yeah the Special is more polished and define one of Yamamuro's better modern work with Takahashi on board, but the original definitely had more impactful scenes and additions fr the manga.
The original one gave wayyyyyy muck more thrilling feeling than the remake version. In the remake version its jst two people are fighting. But in original version there is tension thrilll ........ Man dat 90s animation had weird magic...Todays anime dnt have that feel that 90s animation had....nd i dnt knw y..
The new one was animated by Yamamuro, not Yuya Takahashi.
It's animated by Takahashi and Ken Otsuka and supervised, directed and storyboarded by Yamamuro.
Hello I am Japanese so I can not write English will but I like your movie
That's ok and thank you :)
takashi was ok because of yamamuro shit there, if it was only him, would be an amazing remastered scene.
Is it black sky with red cloud, or red sky with black cloud? :P
YOU FOOL!💥
Everyone seems to dislike the plasticy look, but I think it still looks great. I prefer the original due to its impact, but I love how fluid the second feels
Whats the remake?an episode?a movie?
Ive been told that it was resurrection f but its not there
It's can only be viewed in a Japanese extended version that is a combination of the Resurrection F movie and the Future Trunks special.
overall I like the remake better, but I much prefer the dark red sky of the original
Yeah I liked how the colour of the sky changed during the fight.
Oh how i miss the times of blood in dragonball :,(
Good animation and movement in the remake, but worse artwork overall (IMO). They went with the plastic DBS look and the green sky/unsaturated colors bogged down the seriousness of the scene. Especially when there's less blood as well
Honestly the art is stronger in the newer version animation too. But the problem is the colorinf is squeaky clean and the lines have no personality. Plus lack of blood and battle damage. I think the direction the originalis also stonger. Both have strengtha and weaknesses. I personally think the original has the edge because of rhe overall package. It feels more dire.
OG is King
DBZ series shimanuki is the best animator during that run.
where Is the blood for god saken? the new version looks like a kid version, didnt like at all.;
The og makes me feel like a kid u know brings me back to He man and thunder cat vibes yes I’m only 17 but that’s what I grew up on my dad is nearly 50 and it’s what he watched so when I first saw dbz I feel in love
Takahashi is godly
How many pictures of Kim Jong Un do you have
Hey
You should try animating in stick nodes
The new animation lacks detail. Original animation was more detailed and dramatic. Like that more
The special is censored, instead blood, we get shots of spit and cuts, battle marks are reduced in blood or changed, DBS syndrome *we can't have any excessive blood and it has to be PG*
Dbs airs in prime time when kids are watching. Thus it can’t have too much of that. I don’t really mind though
The old one of course
Oh u cant beat, the new one is stil to stiff and feels like the anatomy is always from one angle
I feel like you’re just giving excuses to the old animations so they sound better than what they really are, and that in turn kinda insults the new animations.
The old one is good, but the new one follows the manga more closely and is more fast paced. It’s fantastic and WAY better than the old one.
If you’re just shafting the new animations, then don’t bother making these “comparisons” because all you’re doing is shilling the old one, likely because of nostalgia.
A weapon to surpass animeajay
dbz goku looks a little more menacing and the background was darker but animation on dbs is way better
We new more blood & ripped clothes
3:23 This is the original? I don't get what I am watching.
It's the original from 2:14 to 4:48
I like takahashis more. His looks sharper and more detailed. But shintanis is the best
can anyone tell me who was the character designer for the Namek Saga?
Minoru Maeda was character designer from the original series all the way through to the Artificial Humans Arc arc and Movie 7. Tadayoshi Yamamuro was then thereafter the character designer for the movies while Nakatsuru was for the Buu arc and GT.
@@forgottenrelics1197 up to cell saga? I thought that was yamamuro cuz of the complex shadows and stuff

It changed to that around the Cell saga, when Goku and Gohan got out of the chamber, that was full power SSJ.
