  • This video shows some of the differences of the Ventrac tough cut over the Steiner. After using both decks for almost the same amount of years I sold my Steiner deck and got the Ventrac. The models discussed in this video are the Ventrac HQ680 and the Steiner 75-71300. If you would like to check out more on the Ventrac HQ680 just click on the link below.

    I have never seen any Steiner equipment first hand. The view you provided of the steiner version of tough cut revealed a feature that would have led to significant damage very quikly in my application; that bar that crosses the front between the wheels. That would be mangled very quickly in reclaiming my fence lines from multiflora rose and olive. I did manage to destroy the left side wheel yolk on the Ventrac and it is a HEAVY steel part. I have also managed to bend the left most blade baffle, the rounded under deck debris guide and will need to pull it back into original shape. I have my anti scalp wheels set high and my wheel kit set way higher than yours, I cut at 5" blade height to allow thick and tough turf on very steep slopes. Tip, consider the "All American" blade sharpening jig with 40grit flap wheels for blade sharpening. Works great!

      I never really liked the wheels to the far outside. The main thing was I couldn't load it on my equipment trailer easily at all. If it would lift straight up without having to put it in transport mode would have been nice. Them wheels always got in my way. I will check out that blade sharpener also, Thanks.

    My Neighbor has a Steiner and I have a ventrac. We worked together on a hillside mowing and his machine went up the hill better than mine every time I would spin out where his wouldn’t. But mine will mow sidehills that his won’t do. So it’s a little trade off. Ventrac is more comfortable we both agree. And easier to put the ventrac in high speed for goin down the road.

      I think its the tires. My bar treads were great pushing dirt and snow, But when you would angle the blade it would push you sideways more. With the tires on the Ventrac it wont push me sideways. You just cant beat the comfort and layout on the Ventrac.

    I recently purchased a Ventrac 4500Y tractor (diesel) and the HQ680 deck. I was very, very disappointed in the reliability of the Ventrac deck. The main drive belt would be frayed after several hours of use and it would break by 10 hours of use. The dealer kept checking the deck and replacing the belts under warranty. After this occurred numerous times, they said it was my fault because I was raising the deck with the blades engaged. So I stopped doing that, but the belt continued to fail. Then the dealer said it was my fault for not running the engine at wide open throttle. I have the diesel engine and I like running at 2300 RPMS to get peak torque and to make the engine last longer. The deck cuts fine at that speed. To me, it seems crazy to run WOT to make the drive belt last ! I am not sure if my deck has a quality issue or if this is a design issue that affects all of the decks. But I am not a happy Ventrac customer.

    • @steiger256
      @steiger256  Před 3 lety +8

      I am not sure why the belt would be doing that. I have 16 hours on mine so far and it is like new yet. I will say, Make sure you run WOT. The Kubota engines are designed to run at 3600 RPM. It is very hard on the pumps to run lower RPMs as well. I would run wide open and see if it fixes it. The blade speed increases a lot at full throttle as well. It may not be spinning blades fast enough to cut grass and be hard on belt. I really hope you can get it resolved, Because I love my 4500 so far.

      @@steiger256 Thank you for replying to my comment. You are correct that the Ventrac belt life improved if I run the engine at wide open throttle. But I can't live with that. I have never heard of a deck that destroys the drive belt if it is not run at full speed . The Ventrac clearly has design/manufacturing issues. I returned the Ventrac deck and purchased a Steiner deck. What an improvement ! I can run the deck at any speed I want to and the drive belt still looks like new.

    • @steiger256
      @steiger256  Před 3 lety +5

      @@bobmcmillan7896 I am glad it helped. I will still strongly suggest running the engine at full throttle while mowing. It is hard on the hydro pumps running lower RPMs as well as many times running lower RPMs also increases fuel usage by making the engine struggle more. The cut quality is way better and the grass cuts better with running high RPMs also. The Steiner deck comes with standard lift blades. I purchased the high lift for my Steiner deck when I purchased it. The Ventrac comes standard with high lift blades. Running lower RPMs may not suck the grass up as well running lower RPMs as well. Running full throttle mowing is probably less harmful to the machine than running lower. I know at full throttle it is screaming for a diesel, But its designed to run at 3600. You will also notice running full throttle that the machine steers better and lifts quicker as well. At least your belt problems have been fixed. I hope all this information has been helpful.

      Bob, I damaged (and I blame myself and the job conditions - not the equipment) two tough cut belts. The application was clearing heavily overgrown fence lines of olive, rose, and mixed brush. The cause was heavy woody stems or branches getting inward to the Ventrac's belt guard causing the guard to rub and even schred the belt. The first time, I smelled burning belt, stopped abd reshaped the guard. Soon after I smelled belt burn again and the belt broke before I could respond. New belt, reshaped the guard, again, and repeat with same ole, same ole and damaged belt. I reshaped the guard again and tossed it into my scarp pile. Replaced betl and ran/running still with NO belt guard and belt is still in good condtion after 4 years of frequent use. I run the new side discharge 72 inch de,ck, the big rotary broom, the boom arm mower, and was running the contour mower all without that danged stupid belt scherdding guard. No problem. I do not run tough cut at full RPM very often, the "sweet spot" for torque on the Kubota gas engine seems to be about 3000 to 3200 rpm. I sometimes run it slower.

    Fun fact the ventrac and steiner were invented by two people named Steiner (im pretty sure they are related) (steiner inventor- Rudolf Steiner) (Ventrac inventer - Marvin Steiner)

      True. The Steiner family made the first Steiner tractor in the early 70s. They sold the company in 1989. In 1998 the came back out with a new company Venture products. They made the Ventrac tractor from 1998 to present. Dallas Steiner is the CEO of Venture products. Ventrac was the pioneer of this turf equipment. Ever since they came back out with there turf equipment, Ventrac has been in overdrive coming out with new attachments every year. I loved my old Steiner, But I am in love with my new Ventrac.

      The Steiner brothers made Steiners in the 70s and 80s. They sold Steiner in 1988. 10 years later they started a new company called Ventrac. The original makers of the tractor is now Ventrac. I did 2 history videos on the company and am currently working on a 3rd video. Look up steiner or Ventrac history to check them out.
