edit* - thing is, as horrible as they are managing a superstar's teammates in his prime, they are even worse at recouping any semblance of equal value in trading said player away then historically... so based upon that track record(re: barkley to phx and/or iverson to Denver as examples 1&2 interchangeably), I hope they do all they can to keep jo happy and not wanting traded out, cause then we will all be served with, "hey we are young and have potential with the right moves later on.... look we just drafted MCW!!..." round 643 or some ish and be expected to like that ish piled high and putrid.... its so rad being a sixers fan... lulz.

Iverson dropped off so quickly because he didn’t spend enough time in the gym. He was naturally lean and athletic in his 20s, but once he reached his 30s, with all those injuries, he had a quick peak and then his body clearly just failed him. He gave it his all in the games, but even he admits he shoulda hit the gym more. And it probably would’ve prolonged his career because he played so physical and had so many injuries. When you’re young and tough as nails like he was, you can gut it out. But eventually Father Time tells your body when it’s over.
Also being was short by NBA standards, means you can’t do anything once your athleticism wanes

He had one of the worst work ethics in the history of any professional sport. I'm not saying he would have won a ring but he certainly didn't do himself any favors or get closer to winning a championship with his lackadaisical preparation.
I disagree. A.I was still a top 5 scorer even with Denver and that was with him having to take a back seat to Carmelo. And his field goal percentage was some of the best of his career in Denver as well. A.I never lost a step. All he lost was his respect from the NBA for his work ethic. That’s what ended his career.
I loved AI back in high school, but he was a huge knucklehead. It wasn’t until he started listening to Larry Brown and started thinking of his teammates that they finally started winning
5:02 Georgetown didn’t just offer the scholarship. Iverson and his mother went to alot of schools and begged for an offer. Luckily, coach Thompson of Georgetown felt pity for Iversons situation and offered him an offer after much pleading by his mom. In Iversons hall of fame induction speech, he thanks coach Thompson for “saving [his] life.”

After watching this video, now I think the story of AI is even sadder than I thought. NBA is such a brutal and competitive league that sometimes even talents like AI with those numbers cant finish their careers with a ring in this league. 76ers definitely wasted his 10 year prime. He deserved at least one ring.

AI, Phillip Rivers, Don Mattingly, The Sedin Twins are all examples of men who tried their hardest (for their mistakes) to get a ring, but other factors doomed them. For AI it was Billy King. For Mattingly it was a lack of competent management and ownership until his later career. For Rivers it was special teams fuckups. For the Sedins it was bad luck.
All 4 have 2 appearances in league championships (2001 NBA Finals, 2011 SCF) between them. No rings. That’s sad.

I feel like a lot of it had to do with the idea the Sixers had for building around AI
They had him be the ENTIRE offense and have the rest of the team be defense.
Then when they tried to surround him with scorers they got shutdown by the Pistons.
They didn’t properly surround him but it’s not like they needed a co-superstar, just a similar supporting cast to what Giannis had in 2018-19
Its a shame because they were aaaalmost there. They had the defensive player of the year, 6th man of the year, and MVP that season they made the finals. Maybe if they could have gotten Scottie Pippen on the backend of his usefulness or a Rasheed Wallace type player. There were a ton of declining players still looking for that elusive ring with the Bulls dynasty officially dead, too.
That said, it wouldn't have been impossible to build a championship team around him, but his ball dominance, size and lack of defense(outside his great steal numbers) make it tough to surround him with motivated, well suited pieces that can push you to that next level. There's a reason guys his size barely make the Hall of Fame.
Saweyrtuide blame Billy King he drafted larry Hughes and he backed out the Tracy McGrady trade in 2001 and Allen Iverson Got blackballed out the league

I was bout 7 in ‘01 but I remember riding round wit my parents after the ECF series victory and the whole city going CRAZY (reminiscent of the Eagles fans chaos in 2017 after winning the SB).. A.I. was and still is EVERYTHING to Philly, damn wish he won one wit us. Oh and btw, Marc Zumoff the legendary 76ers former announcer that retired last year (who you hear commentating in many Iverson games) has one of the GREATEST voices in sports history. His iconic “YESSSS!” is quintessential. Philly forever loves Iverson.

Been an AI fan for well over 15 years, I felt like what made him great ultimately led to his downfall. He fought hard every minute on the floor, with the passion that’s shared by very few. Man, he’s been my inspiration when I was still a kid. If you noticed, AI always showed love to the new generation not like some old heads claiming they’d be this and that. He’s always been real, prob too real for the world to appreciate

Found out about him during a highschool game. He was such a great player at his age. He was speedy but short. An amazing ball handler. Only player from Virginia I can remember to leave such an Impact on the NBAs modern day culture.

And by analytics standards, it was a terrible shot (low % deep 2). That's why AI has no rings and little post season success. He's a flashy, but highly incomplete player.

Iverson didn't allow his prime to be wasted, he lived with the situations and fulfilled the journey through his eyes. He will always be a champion and a Hall of Famer. Legend status. Iverson expresses how happy and grateful for the life he has after NBA retirement, he has a 50 million dollars trust account and a trademark that will be profitable for his family.

You found him the guy who cares about practice probably as much as any coach in the history of the league. I think that's telling to me aboyt the issues the org consistently has the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing. There's a difference between delegating responsibility to a GM and using your ability to veto decisions when it's necessary and a complete lack of being on the same page. It'll hurt your team over and over

I'm a Toronto fan and I was so impressed with his 2001 playoff run. It was weird how the Raptors were the #5 seeds, but they still kind of felt like the favorites as the #1 Sixers were a one man team. But that one man somehow pulled off. Respect to him!
I don't know, Iverson has had plenty of help. Especially when he first came in the league. His rookie year he had Stackhouse who averaged 20ppg and Derrick Coleman with 18ppg and 10rpg. And Clearance Weatherspoon with 12 and 8. The following year again he had Coleman with 18 and 10. Stackhouse with 16ppg. Jim Jackson with 14ppg and Theo Ratliff with 12 and 7. And had Joe Simth and Tim Thomas coming off the bench with 10ppg and 11ppg. He just ran everyone out of town because he couldn't play with them. Him and Stackhouse could have gone down as one of the greatest backcourts ever but he didn't want to share the ball.
If that's what you call "help" then lord.
stackhouse and jim jackson are the kind of scorers with no defense and with the same but a worst skill set of AI with no playmaking. Coleman was basically a washed webber who can shoot midrange with some post ups but nothing else. Those are not the kind of talent to build around AI. AI needed either shooters or a true floor general pg who can shoot and playmake(not snow).

That’s…. Not how it went at all. The sixers tried many times to get Iverson a running mate. They just never got the right one. Whether it was Jerry Stackhouse, Larry Hughes, Tim Thomas, Mutumbo, Matt Harpring, Keith Van Horn, Kenny Thomas, Chris Webber. Didn’t matter. None worked out. The Sixers shelled out money but Billy King was incompetent and Iverson was extremely hard to team build around regardless of how good he was.
@@GabeCerebro ok, so here is the thing, most of the secomd stars the sixers signed or traded for to play alongside Iverson were exactly what arenas was talking about: kucoc, cwebb and van horn for example were passed their primes, so they were discounted second stars, the sixers didnt have to pay them at the top of their game, but hoped each was close enough to such to fool the fans into thinking they were honestly trying to provide allen with that running mate he needed, which they weren't, see arenas's reasons... larry Hughes was a rook, on a team friendly just drafted contract and at that was the most idiotic decision larry brown made while he was with the sixers... they could've had Paul pierce, but instead took larry cause brown didnt think pp would still be available or some nannerz or such.... pp woiuldve been ideal... and lastly stack and iverson apparently hated each other to the point stack tried to fight ai outside after a practice or game or something if i remember correctly.... so yeah, point being, gilbert isnt that off base with his assertion as you seem to think..... /blahg.
Iverson wasn't a player to build a championship contender around. Carmelo Anthony is the same way. Both guys only made one real deep run when they were the primary franchise players on their original squad.

I was a 7th grade Sixers fan when they lost in the finals. I finally got my authentic iverson white Jersey this past year and I’m so happy I have it.
Damn. And I got a Hardwood Classic Iverson Jersey last Saturday from his game against Barcelona for a good price. I'm honestly liking it.

Allen also could have spent more time with his teammates, practiced, took less than the max to help build the roster. He could have had a much longer prime if he took care of himself.
It's so interesting that the coach he wanted fired for so long left to be a champion immediately in other team. There are always two sides to a story, but for the looks of it, the coach had a little more reason to him. Iverson could accept one role, one style of play, one way of living off court and one way of playing basketball. The opposite of a coach's mindset, who always has to change and improvise because the season is long and everything is swapped from one game to the other. Iverson is the one who couldn't accept he had to practice more, he could play differently when needed and, in the later seasons, that he could start from the bench.

Just goes to show that no one talent wins a ring. You need others around them, and a good organization. And all those things pull away from each other.
Superstars want preferential treatment, which hurts the team and organization. Other players get jealous and want more minutes, more money, etc. which hurts the superstar and organization. And the organization has to be smart, tough, diplomatic, and brave, and that is rare, and steps on the toes of some superstars and players anyway.

Listen I'm gonna say something that alot of people are gonna disagree wit but idgaf. Allen Iverson is overrated. The sixers did not fail Iverson, they didnt waste his prime.
I dont care how many times you bring up the 01 playoff run, the reason he never won a championship is because he was a selfish selfish player. He wanted the offense to go through him and him alone. He ran Jerry Stackhouse off the team, he ran Larry Brown his coach off. He never shouldve been playing at the 2 because he was severely undersized he REFUSED to play PG. His massive narcissistic ego is what cost him a chip, he was never willing to sacrifice for long term team success. Allen Iverson was an agent of chaos. As a player definitely one of the best skilled athletes we've ever seen but statistically it was common for him to shoot no more than 42% from the field. 15-35 is what you could expect from him. Imagine if he actually let the front office build around him he wouldve been WAY more successful.
But I see A LOT of idiots in these comment sections putting him up there in the Top 5 SGs of all time. He's certainly no better than Kobe, he's not better than Dwade and not even to mention Clyde Drexler like give me a break.
In the end people will just see the flash and dash then blame the front office when in actuality it was Iverson himself who held himself back from true greatness.
