- Alright, folks, it's a whirlwind week, and today we have the Giant Trance X. It’s new for 2024 with a bit of a departure from the previous version. It’s now quite a bit better on the descents without giving up all that much on the climbs. It’s still quick and sporty, but it packs a bigger punch these days. Stick around to see what it’s all about.

By far the best bike reviewer
Love to hear it! Thanks!
100% I live somewhere with entirely different terrain and I still love your reviews
Seems like alot of local brick n mortar bike shops love Giant. Maybe cause good margins and support etc. I only buy at local shops to support these awesome folks for making my day in a hobby I love. Thank you!
I think a lot of industry folks and shops can see that Giant makes a hell of a bike. That’s probably why shops like them so much. Consumers tend to see them as cheap and lame - which they certainly aren’t. And yes they’re a pretty good brand for shops to partner with for the most part. They’re pretty fair and easy to work with.
@@bikersedge I've only been into mountain biking again since covid started, but Giant has just seemed like a brand for newbies and boomers. Basically, people who haven't really researched more of the options that are out there.
It’s unfortunate that a lot of people see them that way. Some of my favorite bikes have been Giants.
@@bikersedge The new 2024 trance ebike seems to be great value. I saw a video from a Canadian the other day showing it off, since it hasn't released yet in the U.S. due to too much old inventory still in the system. It even comes with carbon wheels at a relatively affordable price.
Damn your pumping these reviews out right in time for the spring season! Glad to see more of my favorite MTB review channel, can't wait for more E-MTB content as well as I'm considering joining the dark side
We've got a lot of that in the hopper too. Stay tuned.
Great review! My wife had the 2023 Trance X 29, your assessment 100%. Nice improvement on this model.
Yeah. I love to see these updates.
@ehosey2
i still have my 2018 Trance 2 with the 27.5 wheels. Still a great bike. I have upgraded the shifter and RD to XT. I am still running the Fox 34 Rythm but replaced the rear Float DPS with a Fox Float X. However, the stock dropper post needs to be replaced and would like to upgrade the 23mm stock rims. Now, Giant releases these new Trance X models and I am torn between upgrading my Trance 2 or moving to the new Trance X1. Only thing I am not certain on is moving to 29 inch wheels. I am 5'8" and ride a medium but thinking maybe a small size with the 29r. Fantastic reviews by the way.
Solid review! How does it compare to the updated/burlier Occam LT? You had a shootout between the 2 bikes a few years ago that was great.
The Occam LT get's quite a bit burlier than this. The new SL gets less burly than this. The new Trance X sits between those two but still slightly more DH focused than the previous Occam.
both my elbows are roasted on both sides from riding. I even make sure to ease grip pressure. does thi likely mean i need my bars closer?
I'm glad Giant has finally caught up to modern standards. It only took them like 6 years? I've always loved the Trance, such a versatile and reliable bike, but I always had to modify mine to make it better at going fast and steep. Nice to see it is now capable right out of the box.
Yeah they’ve been on the pedally side for a bit. Stoked on this one.
Love your reviews! After all the trail bikes you have reviewed recently, what’s your pick?
I own a 5010 if that helps!
@@bikersedge is that a basic santa cruz trail bike?
Is the black one only available in Canada? I only see a grey one on the Giant website.
In the US there are two builds in the carbon frame. The 0 and the 1. The one I have is the 1.
Looks a great all-rounder, as someone who is generally in between sizes I like the idea of the reach adjustment!
Same!
@@bikersedge interesting how close this is getting to the previous Reign 29 (160/146mm travel) actually, at least on paper. Natural comparison for me as I still have one (2020 Adv 1), but I imagine a while since you rode one to compare how they feel? I would expect the Trance X to be a bit more poppy and supportive feeling but will have to try it at some stage to find out! Its probably a logical update path for me when the time comes, don't think I'm badass enough for the new Reign 😅
I always thought the previous reign 29 was more of an all mountain bike than an enduro bike. It’s been a few years since I’ve ridden one though so I can’t really make many comparisons. I remember that previous reign riding big in terms of geometry but not the most forgiving suspension feel. The trance is almost the inverse. Rides maybe a bit more agile but the suspension feels easier to get along with.
How would this compare to the pivot switchblade?
Not sure. Haven't ridden that.
What tires do you like for dry conditions
For dry hardpack I’ll take a minion front and rear. For dry and blown out I’ll take an assegai and minion combo. Big fan of Conti tires lately too. I’m running an argotal and kryptotal combo right now.
If 95% of your riding is at places where you start and finish at a trailhead car park so therefore any downhill you get is directly proportional to the amount of uphill riding would you recommend this platform (Trance X) or the Trance 29er 130/120 travel Fox 34
Depends on which one you care about more. If you want the climbs to go faster get the previous one. If you’re willing to put up with a tiny bit less efficiency (the trance x is still a great climber) in favor of a better time on the descents then get the new one.
Whats the difference between the Reign and Trance? Seems almost identical.
Travel, geometry, leverage curve. I agree there’s a bit of overlap but the reign rides much bigger.
I didn't calculate the angles but my 2023 trance X29 has currently a 185x60 dpx2 shock and a 180mm rst stich fork, total randomness and inappropriate parts but I like it better like that 😂
Dayum. Getting wild over there.
Is the standard Trance also getting redesigned for 2025?
Not sure. Haven’t heard anything.
@@bikersedgealso David Arthur is teasing the new Anthem .
Damn you may talked me into this bike as my alternative to my eMTB 🤔🤔
This is a great one if you’re looking for a balanced ride quality.
Literally best video describes exactly what I want a fun lil bike to go with burly ebike
@@kevinmanzo862 it would be a good combo.
Uhm….Hightower maybe?😊
Seems geo and use & etc mirrors the HT3.
Pretty different feel. The HT rides bigger.
Sounds like a good "first MTB" bike.
It would fit the bill.
This guy knows how to review a bike
If he could only figure out how to ride them that would be great.
Which of this new crop of 140mm bikes would you have if you lived in St. George?
For what I like to ride down there I’d take the Instinct. If I lived there I’d just lap grafton until my legs fell off.
If you climb more, stick with the old trance x, if you descend more, go with the new Trance X.
Close. If you climb more the old Trance X is probably better. If you're more balanced between uphill and downhill the new one is the better option.
@@bikersedge How much better is the old one in climbing?
@@Lenser 10% roughly.
@@bikersedgeI'll take the 10% climbing advantage and keep my 2021 TX Advanced 😊
@@bikersedge and how much better descending is the new one?
The Trance X is no longer a Trail bike, it's an All Mountain bike through and through.
One could say that. Except it’s still very balanced between uphill and downhill.
@@bikersedge Exactly. All Mountain.
@@SteveSUX2BU Then what is a trail bike?
@@bikersedge The regular Giant Trance. Less travel, lighter weight components. Less aggressive geometry.
@@SteveSUX2BU so a trail bike prioritizes climbing?
