The ending of the song was about his friend Joe Hughes who sadly took his own life at the age of 19 (by jumping off the Menai Bridge about 3.00 a.m. on 28th December 2010). Ren wrote the song Freckled Angels about Joe and dedicated the album of the same name to him
Man, this is one deep song. His childhood best friend, Joe Hughes, took his own life, this song is about their grief from his loss. A really beautiful and haunting tribute. They honored his memory in such a respectful way and expertly portrayed what grief can do to the people left behind after losing someone you love. Besides the fact they’re just so damn talented, super theatrical and emotive, and their being so in tune with one another. Masterfully done.
Oh then I guess I missed the meaning entirely, no knowing the context of that story.
@@zack_reacts yeah, you kinda need the backstory for this. His whole freckled angels album is a dedication to Joe. He is their freckled Angel 💔 Also the I don’t think you were too far off in your assessment even without knowing the backstory, because the emotions he’s singing about are of his own grief and you did get that.

Ren & Chinchilla have an incredible musical chemistry - they are like mirror images of each other. Ren refers to her as his musical sibling. Chinchilla said that finding Ren, from a musical point of view, was like meeting a stranger and finding their sense of humour is 100% the same as yours. An extremely rare thing.
Ren was the person who didnt get to his friend Joe when he jumped off the bridge. He was running to him as he had been on the phone with him and missed him by just a minute or two. He lives with that everyday. He was his closest childhood friend. They never found his body.
I am sure he views his sin as not getting there in time.
He has done various tributes to Joe.
He tells the story in an interview with Knox Hill.
So I thought I would see how many songs that Ren has on the internet. With his bands like Trick the Fox, The Big Push and Ren's original songs. I have found at least 80 and that is not counting busking and not saying that animal flow acoustic and the mask video are 2 different songs, because there are a couple that are like that. I did include his cover songs. Holy crap.
I’ve never been more grateful that this stuff is being documented for us all. Some of the greats only have a small portion of their stuff recorded, if at all, & their early bands usually only exist through interviews & books. 💜

This is such an achingly beautiful song, and such a powerful performance. Both of them demonstrate their vocal talents on this one. They are both just genuinely nice people too - no pretensions and no arrogance in their characters whatsoever. They both fully deserve the exposure they are starting to get and the fame that is surely in their future.
Having spent 2 years in jail in pc i can very much relate to being stuck in a room. For ren he had a lot more things to occupy his mind than people who are incarcerated. When you are in a room with 1 other person for roughly 22 hours out of the day with very little to occupy your time all you really have is your own thoughts. In that situation you go through a lot of soul searching. You go through a lot of intense thinking. You become wiser in a way. Being stuck behind bars whether its actually in jail, your body is the jail or your mind is the jail it really does play tricks on you. No more locked doors

As usual, great reaction. Thank you for continuously promoting Ren and other artists. As for "How to Be Me," Ren's best friend, Joe Hughes, committed suicide on the 27th of December, 2010 by jumping off a bridge; his body was never recovered. Ren alluded to it in one of his songs, stating that he lost his best friend before he was 25. The pain of this loss is evident in a few of his songs, "Freckled Angels" being one example. It is dedicated to Joe Hughes. Someone else commented that the video was shot at the bridge that Ren's friend jumped from, however, others have stated that this is misinformation.
Ren's and Chinchilla's live performance of "Chalk Outlines" is still my favorite song, partly because I can relate to it due to my own daily struggles. Although, losing your best friend to suicide is also something I experienced when I was 19 y/o (almost 38 years ago). “How to Be Me” definitely runs a close second, though. I would recommend you check out their busking sessions in Brighton, performing “Sexual Healing” (Marvin Gaye cover) and “One Dance / Drunk In Love” (Drake/Beyoncé cover); those performances are of a much lighter mood and very enjoyable.
I hope you will continue to dive into Ren's and Chinchilla's catalogs.
I didn't know how to express things I felt in my own life until I heard the line in Chalk Outlines "In the gallows I balanced on my toes so I can breathe." I managed to put that feeling behind me, but I'll never forget it, and I'll never forget that so many people have to go through it. If I knew what it was that helped me put my darkest days behind me, I'd bottle it up and hand it out to everyone who needed it. I'm sending best thoughts to you!

It perfectly describes my daily struggle over the past 25+ years. Ren has been able to express through his songs what I have been unsuccessfully trying to communicate to others regarding my mental, emotional, and physical struggles. It is only by God's grace that I am able to keep going. May He bless you and yours.
Sometimes it's not about obsessive, mathematical analysis of lyrics. Sometimes it's about feeling, flow and emotional build.

You've reminded me how CZcams supresses the word "suicide" when it's a word we should use in order to shed light on a tragedy. You and I understand what self-deletion is, but the term is not as impactful to the people who really need to grasp what depression and mental illness are, and how it's possible to make a rash decision. This song is about missing his best friend who jumped off the bridge they are on. Talking to the dead...talking to his friend. He forgot how to be himself without his friend. PS I didn't get it the first time either. Listened again after knowing and it broke me.
Joe jumped off a different bridge than they are singing on. They might even be singing on a roof top.

I did not know that at all. I try not to learn any sort of context so I can give an authentic reaction as if I have zero idea and gather what I gather by watching. I do that on purpose, so unfortunately sometimes, I will completely miss.

This isn't The Menai Bridge in N. Wales that Joe Hughes jumped from. It isn't even a bridge. There is a brick wall and glass doors visible in the background several times in this video. There's no need to romanticize Joe's tragedy or the devastation it caused those left behind with something we read social media. I understand our tendency to add our own spin, and someone clearly did at some point not too long ago.

I'm loving your reactions, but wanted to point out that there are some people who've read somewhere and repeated that the song was recorded on the bridge Joe Hughes jumped from. I don't want to harsh on those people, but the story isn't true. Anyway, ths song is achingly sad, and its performance is no easy task, given some complicted harmonies, and singing it in unison with such precision. It's stunning.
