Mercedes is a character I didn't really vibe with on my first 3 Houses playthrough, as I thought she was rather boring. However, upon doing a Mercie Deep Dive, I've come to really love her, to the extent that she's definitely my favorite 3 Houses character, and possibly a top 10 Fire Emblem Character of all time for me. In this video, I dive into her backstory, her character traits, and her relationship with others.
Hopefully this will help make up for the video I made about how bad she is as a unit.

Also I just want to acknowledge the gigantic black hole of missed opportunity that was neither 3hs nor 3hopes giving Mercedes and Marianne a support, what happened there
I also find that rather strange. They're both highly religious, have poor relationships with their adoptive fathers and have Crests that negatively impact their lives.
Mercedes has 3 things going for her.
First, her personal skill makess her the lowest maintenance pure support in the game. She almost never needs a turn to heal herself, and is healed by doing what you probably want her to do anyways.
Second, she is just barely durable enough to not immediately explode when hit. Some enemies will still do her in one, but she actually will get to use her self healing pretty often. Especially if you get her armor certified.
Third. By the immutable laws and bonds that form between we degenerates, in crystalizing the invisible facts of fictional characters, I can say with confidence. Mercie pegs.
Just... feel it flow through you. You already know it to be true.
Oh, and yeah, good person, too.
Something that I like is that you get a special scene after defeating the Death Knight (AM) in case you've completed her paralogue with Caspar. I think it makes her feel more meaningful to the story than a lot of other characters.
The bit about wounded healers really resonated with me, I'd never heard of that term before, but I suppose I was somewhat familiar with it, as through my own observations of my life and those around me who have had to deal with similar issues, I noticed that "people who have been traumatized and/or abused seem to want to give others what they felt they lacked during the hardest periods of their lives, even, or especially if they continue to lack it."
For me, that's a desire to never feel as though the people around me think of themselves as alone and isolated, I always want to be there for people if they need someone because too often in my own life I needed help... and nobody came.
Welcome to the Mercie enjoyer club! I also initially thought she was kinda boring and just nice but seeing all her supports changed that. I do love that one support where she goes off on Lorenz too. I think it demonstrates a certain amount of self-respect that shows she's done some healing, even if she still has some work to do in that department.

Mercedes is my favorite 3H character for many of the same reasons you listed Dani. I love her unwavering kindness and gentle strength. Mercedes’ personality also reminds me of one of my dearest friends irl, so I find it very easy to connect with her. She’s the one unit I always recruit no matter what route I’m playing.

So there's some interesting localization changes with Annette and Constance.
Constance and Mercedes' affection for eachother is downplayed in english (which seems to be a theme for same-sex pairs in the english localization). Backing up a little to talk about the sisters thing, Constance just calls Mercedes big sister instead of Mercedes in Japanese, which you can't really do in english which is why it just drops in occasionally in the supports, though oddly, often in a different spot from the Japanese, where there are no "sister sages", for example. Additionally, Constance refers to her other personality as a seperate her, so the english line "I am as a sister to you no matter which face I present" is in Japanese instead "If "she" is a little sister to you, big sister, then that means she's my twin". So instead of beginning to speak of eachother as sisters, they treat eachother as sisters already. The ending is roughly the same until after the revitalization of their houses, where in Japanese it is:
Throughout the two's lives, they were bound together by a deep love and respect that went beyond friendship. Even after receiving their titles, it is said they continued to spend time together like sisters.
So yeah, definitly could still go either way, but a close bond for sure.
The Anette A support is identical until Annette says she loves Mercedes more than anything in the world, where the conversation then instead becomes:
Mercedes: Oh, is that... a confession of love? That makes me happy
Annette: Ah, uhm, I wanted to say I like the sweets you make more than anything in the world!
Mercedes: Oh, is that the case~ love you, Annie
Annette: Ah, I love you too! Mercie, love you!
Which means that instead of throwing in a joke about how Annette maybe likes Mercedes' baking more than Mercedes herself they just play it entirely straight with them affirming their love for eachother.

@@DaniDoyle Yeah, I would imagine. I want to do a proper side by side of the localization at some point, but I need to find the time. Whilst japanese three houses still never quite manages to say it explicitly (though Cathmir comes extremely close), the subtext is much heavier. For another example, in Edelthea A Dorothea is quite clear that it is men who no longer interest her, rather than love in general, and their ending refers to [her] beloved emperor.
I'm glad you've come around on her! I loved her from my first run of the game, and was really happy that she was able to get through to Sylvain since that boy really needed to talk about his problems(my sweet, problematic son). I made a mad dash at the end of my first playthrough to make sure they ended up together lol.
Lovely video, I really enjoyed getting a closer look at a character I had also initially deemed as basic.
I really enjoyed Mercedes' character when I first played 3H and she is one of my favorites out of the cast, but I never really knew why. I think you put into words a lot of the feelings I had all those years ago in a way I couldn't have back then. I resonated with her so much, and now that I have grown and started pursuing my own career in mental health I see it even more. Still gotta work on that self love but growing is part of life no? For someone reason, I -a very religious lesbian called to care work as a consequence of multiple traumatic experiences who is now a pastor-felt very drawn to Mercedes as a character from my first go-round with Three Houses. Who can say why, one of life’s mysteries. Anyway, very good video! ❤️🔥🤘🏼
Bonus fun fact, my halloween costume for the social distanced halloween hangout on the seminary quad in 2020 was basically a _very_ budget Mercedes cosplay!

Great Breakdown! Mercedes is a great character, and essentially the mom of the Blue Lions. She's the one they would go to if they ever need emotional support, and I think we all appreciate having thise kinds of people in our lives.

Looking back on it, I was disappointed by a lot of the story aspects of 3h, but the funny fantasy anime dating sim srpg being a cover to tell multifaceted stories about people growing past and reacting to trauma is something I am satisfied with

had a similar experience with Hubert. during my first playthrough i found Hubert mildly annoying and combatively unimpressive. coming back to it a few years later i paid more attention and realized that he acts almost the same way i did at his age, especially his devotion to Edelgard. and as a unit he was far from terrible, not the most impressive but he's still a natural dark caster. i also played Persona 5 between my first and second playthrough of the game, so hearing Robbie Daymond earned Hubert a lot of my favour

Mercedes is a great character who I think is done a bit of a disservice by being mediocre in terms of gameplay and having (IMO) a mediocre dub. Not an awful one but the sing-songy Minnie Mouse voice grated on me. The "wounded healer" thing is really interesting, especially as it recontextualizes her personal skill. That she heals herself by healing other people isn't just part of the gameplay, it's who she is.
I do really like a lot of the 3H queer rep even if the way they handled the distribution of these characters was kinda questionable (for God's sake why are they all from Adrestia?). Dorothea and Yuri in particular feel like queer characters who have plenty going on besides being bi, but at the same time being bi is also a very real part of their identities. A massive step in the right direction.
I know I've mentioned this in a comment on another video of yours, but I'll say it again here: as an asexual man of faith, I find that Mercedes is an absolute breath of fresh air. A character with real personal and emotional depth who successfully portrays that there's no need for there to be contradiction between faith and sexuality. She's queer and shows no need to hide it, and she's devout in a way that legitimately shows care toward others and isn't self-righteous. 11/10, one of if not my absolute favorite LGBT+ character in any media I've ever consumed.

ahhhhhh okay youve totally changed my mind on mercedes. she always seemed maybe a little bland to me but... idk being a disabled transfemme trying to enter the helping field leading by insight and empathy.... idk i get it i totally get it. one of my favorite three houses traits is that they'll slip surprising insight or intelligence to their characters, like dorothea, sylvain, claude (just the raw amount of social intelligence this boy has... like its alot), ede, i mean the list goes on. i love that they will make them maybe a bit cartoonish on the outside, but have real character and motivation and depth below the surface, often accompanied by the ability to see past other character's bs, just like Mercedes can. anyways i forgot where im going with this but love the video!
