Saving an Endangered Species while also Making Money - Zebra Pleco Breeding with Jeremy Basch

- Jeremy Basch is one of the countries best pleco breeders and is known for breeding some rare fish. Today, Jeremy shares with us some secrets to breeding an endangered species called the Zebra Pleco (Hypancistrus zebra "L46"). Steps must be taken to keep this species of fish alive. It is up to people like Jeremy to ensure that this fish does not go extinct.
Although the preservation of this species is of most importance, there is some serious money to be made by breeding this fish. Commercial retailers are known to sell these fish for upward of $250 each. While only having small batches of babies, there is still a steep reward for hobbyist who can help keep this species alive for years to come.

haa you didn't se the little pleco baby hiding underneath the cave entrants when he picked up the cave at 7:02 ? beside the twig. So cute. Those are so expensive her in sweden. A tiny fry as that in one of my tanks and i would be afraid to sneeze near the tank in fear of money go down the drain. Great video again.

Great video dude. I had the privilege thanks to Rob and Jeremy yo visit the fish room within an hour of getting off the plane, and even being so tired my eyes soon woke up seeing this awesomeness in person. I'm starting out with bristlenose, and I'll definitely need to learn patience as they have some growing to do yet!
I've been thinking about it forever and just last morning I thought "I really need to make a decision about getting some zebras, and I just got this 40 gallon". Of course as soon as I say that I get the notification for this video. Can't wait to get my hands on some!

When I first heard about zebra pleco's, the price scared me, then I fond out they were endangered and breeding them could help the species, now I WANT THEM! and selling them to get more tanks for them would be nice too :) Thank you so much for this video, like a serious thank you, and a huge thank you to Jeremy for his tour of his fish room!

Before the bann was put in place? Is that why they are so expensive is because you can only get bred zebras now? Also, I'm curious as to how/why they are endangered and if it's up to us to keep them from extinction or if there are any conservation efforts being made along with the hobbyists.

This guy is on it! No way he telling us everything, I wouldn't! Imagine getting a handle on breeding this fish! They go for £150 here in the U.K.. I guess I'm going to need a breeding group to get a pair from, that's £1500-2000. Then pray! Big gamble. Good luck to the guy :-)

I dig the pleco caves, it looks like they were made out of clay. Does anyone know what type of clay you use to make aquarium things? I would assume it has to be baked, not airdry type, but I could be wrong (would like to be wrong lol)
Also, does anyone know if using Polymer clay for aquarium stuff is ok? I do a lot of work with that stuff, so I would love to use it more (I have a "tree" I made in one aquarium that I made a platform for out of Poly clay and have been using it for years... things survive in the tank but that doesn't mean I am not slowly poisoning them LOL. I would like to know to be sure)
Oh my goodness that's a great question! I've been making things out of polymer clay myself for a long time but have always been afraid I guess to put it in water I don't know if I'm more afraid of destroying myproject or my fish Lol! LOL JK

I'm not sure wherabouts in the world you are but in England I bought all my different size caves from Ebay
Hey Jeremy, is it true that Plecos need to have wood to survive?
I'm not Jeremy but driftwood is completely necessary for some plecos (wood eaters) becuase it helps with their digestion which is crucial to their survival. But generally driftwood is recommended for pretty much all plecos. But the carnivorous plecos like leopard cactus pleco ( L114 ) dont need driftwood to survive but it's always good to put some in the tank with them.
As far as I saw the prices... you can make a ton of money from breeding this kind of fish
I had a chance to get a colony of Zebras at one point and due to my habit of shooting myself in the foot I passed it up. I do however have a colony of L052 butterfly's that are limited import so rare-ish. Rob are you still in possession of that Kiln? If so I'd like to see if we could work something out for a bunch of caves at a later date.
Im protesting the Zebra Pleco’ They are not even endangered and the High price is marked up by sellers who inflate the price’ I know like 4 or 5 breeders personally of this pleco so they are far from rare’ If people protest the price will drop’
Rare is relative, in comparison to other species there are less available, clutches are smaller & farther between & since export/import of wild caught Zebra L46 was banned there are less available in the industry which drove prices up, supply & demand. L46 prices are right up there or even a little lower than other Pleco species with same restrictions.

Evan Rules there are supposably some species of ghost shrimp that so breed in freshwater although most do not

I think it could be generally better if your camera and thus video focused more on the fish and aquariums instead of the fishkeeper. Only the voice is important to hear, not to see him talking. After all this hobby is 90%+ about watching aquariums and their occupants.
