For some projects one must ask "why am I doing this?" Some appear simple and yet pose real challenges that test one's resolve. Through the patient application of honed techniques success is possible, even if those approaches need to be modified or run out of order.
And yes, for everyone who is itching to point it out, I know I flubbed the audio at 20:35. Better the audio than the painting ;)

I always love the polite shade Julian throws at clients who won't listen to his suggestions. It's basically, "You're entitled to your wrong opinion."
LOL Reminds me of a t-shirt I saw with the slogan "You don't have to agree with me. I can't force you to be right"
I wonder if they watch his CZcams channel? I totally would, but I'd also go with whatever Julian recommends 🤣
The nice (and most important) thing is that he is honest to the client. He told them what was possible, what to expect from the results, and what he recommended. This allows the client to make an informed decision. The client is entitled to their wrong opinion BECAUSE they were told that it's wrong.
@@renerpho I agree 100%.
Julian, master craftsman: *May I suggest that we replace the strainer with a stretcher?"*
The client: *"nEveR! soMeOne wrOtE soMetHinG in cHalk, it MUST bE vErY imPorTanT!!!1!"*
Julian: "there is so much overpaint here"
Me, who has never even touched a painting ever: How DARE they
My first time watching this type of portrait restoration expertise. I felt the same way when he critiqued the previous attempt at "restoration".
That's all of us at this stage lol
@@DaleDix As they say - too many monkeys in the zoo. You see it in any field of life where expertise at repair and rebuilding is needed. Homes, cars, artwork, even landscaping to properties. I've seen cars that were given multi-thousand dollar "Restorations" that sold at auction for tens of thousands of dollars and were given a re-restoration by the new buyer. When the cars were torn down by quality and excellent restoration shops that knew what they were doing and had passion in their craft, they would find rust holes in the frames and bodywork just filled with old newspaper and sprayfoam, paint that didn't bond to the metal and was coming off again the second a part was removed, wiring that was hacked apart and bodged back together, engine that had misfires....just a lot of crap work by people that took the money and ran, didn't care about what they were doing. The person that owned said bitch jobs never noticed the poor work either because they just bought it for clout and didn't see that everything was wrong.
Same with this painting here, I bet it found a new owner and the person seen the damage and how nasty it looked and knew that it had been bodged and wanted it done right.
I've painted some paintings I'm not proud of but even so, if someone just painted over them I would rage honestly. thats mine, not theirs. in all its wonky misshapen glory
Dunning-Kruger effect in action. It's so easy to feel confident in something after very little exposure.
"When we first met her, she was a mess, and actively falling apart"
Same.
I've never felt more seen 🤣🤣
*“Don’t You Want Me” by The Human League intensifies*
Honestly same, still falling apart even now 😔
She is me, and I even look like her ❤️
i love the whole part where he basically said "this hand sucks but if the artist drew a hand that sucks then god damn it i'm gonna stay faithful no matter what" and yknow what? thats hilarious and awesome actually
I couldn’t stop snickering during that section 😂
I’m sure the artist could never have imagined that in the future over 600k people would watch their painting be restored so lovingly, while also being roasted so thoroughly.
To the person who predicted Julian would end part 2 with "... The Lady of the Manor":: I think he said 'THAT Manor' just to spite you. Lol ♥
was just about to write that lol
i came to the comments just got this
and that's why we freaking love this man!
I remember that comment very well. Well predicted or... 😁
😂
I never thought I would see Bernadette Banner mentioned on a Fine Art Restoration channel, but I'm not complaining. Now we need some sort of cross-over.
It's the BCU! (either Bernadette Cinematic Universe, or Baumgartner Cinematic Universe - I'm here for it either way)
Agreed! Such a brilliant combination
@ HCCU
(Historic Creator Cinimatic Universe)
I hope they contact each other and we get a video about the clothing the Countess is wearing...
I love Ms. Banner!! Discovered both her and Mr. Baumgartner about the same time.
When he used the new paint I was like “wow that really spreads better than his old paint” and then I realized I may watch too many of his videos.
SAME LOL
There is no such thing as too many Baumgartner Restoration videos.
no but literally same
The chalk writing is in French and says "Vidaud du Dognon".
Vidaud is the last name of Marguerite Salmon's husband Jean Martial Vidaud whose title was Chevalier du Dognon (Knight of Dognon) and he was known under "Jean Martial Vidaud du Dognon".
Thanks for solving that mystery!
So is this the Lady of the Manor?
@@meeseification Either that, or he was simply a prior owner of the painting. But given the time period he lived in, it's probably a painting of a family member, either his spouse, or his mother.
Yes, we cannot know for sure.
But Julian is the one who said she was named Marguerite Salmon in the first part video, which is why I went with Jean Martial Vidaud du Dognon, who was Marguerite Salmon's husband.
*sad french noises*
I was trying to solve iiiit
YESSSSSSS BERNADETTE X BAUMGARTNER IS THE CROSSOVER IVE WAITED MY WHOLE LIFE FOR
And my life is now complete
I was coming here to say the same. Recognized her hand as soon as it was on my screen. She is such a great historian / maker.
YES! ☺️
Wanted to say the same thing!!
Yes, as soon as he started talking about the dress (after mentioning Skillshare right at the beginning) I crossed my fingers for the two parts of CZcams I love most to get connected... Now I just wanna see one of the costubers to recreate that dress!
I can’t even imagine sending this painting in its original state to be restored and getting the beautiful clear portrait back. Breathtaking.
Exactly what i was thinking.
It is always a wonderful surprise, to get back a totally clean and clear painting.
But on a strainer. Not a stretcher :(
The end results always look better than I imagined it could in the beginning.
@@Tantejay With the PET/interleaved lining, a stretcher would have been superfluous, anyway.
Julian: Starts retouching
Me: "Oof, that looks terrible! Doesn't match at all!"
Julian: 15 seconds later...
Me: "Holy crap! Where did the damage go?!?"
Every. Single. Time.
I know right... You're looking at the mess he's making and suddenly it's all gone and you have to rewind to see what happened.
lol its the matched base color. the shadows give it shape. the details make it look alive. if you look at your hand, it has a base color, but there's also shadows, lighting color, blushes, blemishes, jewelry, a vein maybe running underneath, all those things make it look way different than just the flat skin color. same for textiles. it's actually pretty hard to match a base color by eye alone because of all this because you have to see past all of that AND match the color accurately. which is a mix usually of multiple different colors.
I've heard this before from my partner when I'm painting. you guys crack me up x) english is not my native language btw so if parts sound weird blame google translate. I dont talk a lot about painting online
This time it was... Not as good.
4:27 "My gosh, I can't wait to get retouching!" *grabs scissors and a hammer*
This part just killed me🤣
“I like the way it looks and it’s my studio, so there” ABSOLUTELY JULIAN 👏🏻👏🏻
Got to be the moment he gets his own back...all that bowing to history . BUT My corners are mine.
Julian preparing a pile of tacks as if he’s putting sprinkles on a cupcake
tack bae
now we need a tack-sprinkles montage with Moriah Elizabeth's famous "sexy sprinkle song" playing in the background
@@winkleperiwinkle808 Yes!!
@@TheOverratedDarkness Delightful image of Julian decorating a cake, applying teeny tiny sprinkles, one by one, using a specialized "sprinkle hammer" to attach the carefully folded fondant icing around the edges of the cake, because ....... that's just how he does it.
giving this the 1,000th like bc it deserves it
"Which means that my retouching can't be...focused "
*irritated sigh*
*mouse click*
*same line but better*
I actually love that. Your cinematography is polished enough that those small reminders that you are human and talking into a microphone for 30 minutes isn't as easy as some folks think is highly relatable
went through the comments to see if someone else spotted it, hehe ;)
In case anyone is wondering, this happens at 20:27
@@asimhussain8716 too many youtubers try to appear perfect and remove all the flaws and mistakes, he doesn't. That's admirable and it deserves to be noticed.
HAHAH I NOTICED THIS
Julian promoting Bernadette's Skillshare video in his sponsored segment is an absolute win for the historical dressmaking & fine art restoration community
I started laughing. I wonder if he realizes she is the Julian of the historical fashion world.
If I ever won the lottery, I'd buy an old painting that needed your expertise, then the first thing I would do when it had been restored, is to turn it around to admire your edges and corners. 😊💖
They are just so smooth and beautiful aren’t they?😌
Perfect subject for linking to Bernadette Banner! I'm amazed at how the restoration brought the subject's dress to life - suddenly you can see the patterned satin, the delicate, expensive lace, and the interesting colour combination of the red and green! I also love that she is so beautiful without being young, so much to appreciate here. I'm so glad she's saved!
She looks clever and kind.
I don't know what it is about this one in particular, but I think this is truly the best I've seen from Julian, even though it obviously wasn't the most technically challenging. Fairly challenging, though, with all the paint coming off and the terrible overpaint. Maybe that's part of it, the terrible condition of the painting contrasted with how Julian was able to retrieve so much of the original paint and put it back together. But also the skill of the painter in showing the beautiful satin and so-delicate lace, the lovely skin tones, and that she looks like such a nice person. Clever and kind, indeed, and maybe a hint of humour.
As a French direct descendant of Marguerite Salmon, I find this video quite moving, showing the delicate features of a lady of the XVIIIth century, who was living in a very old and charming feudal estate close to ours. Thanks to Julian and the owner of this painting for saving this "Lady of the Manor" from oblivion.
Hello Dominique, I knew Philippe Vallantin Dulac, he was a huge influence on me... is there a way for us to connect?🙌
Please, let me know if I can message you in a more private channel
As someone who's been following Bernadette Banner for years now, it really makes me smile to see her work highlighted on totally unrelated channels :)
I didn't know Bernadette had a skillshare course, that's really cool!
Does she have a CZcams channel?
edit: I think I could watch her for the same sort of relaxation this channel gives me. Sometimes I get ASMR vibes from craftsman videos...
@@Stadtpark90 yes she does! It's very fun.
She also has a book that's coming out in April which has all the basics of sewing and mending your clothes.
@@GirishManjunathMusic Thanks! Wow. Can’t wait to watch her.
@@Stadtpark90 yes! she does have a CZcams channel
I was surprised when you retouched the first hand, I thought the white dot is a filling medium, but it turned out to be a shape of a ring 😳
To me Quite honestly, I thought the Ring was to be just a little bigger, that could be just me of course.
That freaked me out. I was all WAIT A SECOND!
I was saying it’s a ring it’s a ring but nothing escapes Julian
@@dianaartdent1592 It's not just you. He kinda ganked it up.
@@dennisp.2147 i know I'm late to the ring judgement party, but I agree. Little ganked.
You couldn't even see the flowers on her skirt before.
As an artist myself, it makes me truly happy that conservators like Julian exist in this world. Sure, some things might be lost to time, but what is left can always be made whole again.
“It’s my studio, so there!”
😂 I love when Julian gets sassy!!!
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻❤️❤️❤️
Ditto.
You should collab with Bernadette where she’ll make the clothing seen in whatever painting you’re restoring!
I second this motion.
That’s a brilliant idea!
and Julian is wearing it whilst he works on the painting?
I third this motion. Bernadette is a precious treasure, she'd have an absolute blast with a project like that
This would be an amazing collab, I am sure there is an art owner out there who'd be happy to be part of that.
Ok. So Bernadette Banner's youtube channel is one of my absolute favorites. It was particularly unexpected but a welcome surprise to see Julian doing an add for her Skillshare class. I would have preferred some sort of collaboration about identifying and or restoring a historical costume, but hey, I'll take whatever crossovers I can get.
Ooh yes! Or maybe her recreating a dress in a painting he restores.
1:04 Hearing Julian talk about Bernadette is making my heart soar. It’s your influences combined that I’ve been considering conserving historical clothing!
I’d love to see the differences under the uv light after you’ve finished the conservation. I’m curious to see what the next conservator would see if they looked at your work in like 50 years as you do for your predecessors. Great work, as always!
Hearing Julian say "tidy" fills me with delight and glee and I have zero idea why. I'm okay with that. 😊
Same
I love Bernadette! So cool to see you shout-out her skillshare class 🥰
Can confirm, Bernadette Banner is an excellent sewing teacher! Excellent plug, Julian 👍
I started watching this when COVID started thinking it would kill 30 minutes but would be boring. Since then I've gone back and watched almost all the past episodes and look forward to new ones. I never knew this could be so interesting. This guy does an incredible job.
I think it shocked a good bunch of us when we discovered we enjoyed sitting and watching a guy scrape a painting for what seemed like a day but we didn’t complain and we signed on to do it repetitively! Who knew this was an important thing to do?!
Didn't even see he uploaded part 1 last week. Now i have an hour of restoration... bliss.
YOOOOO! Bernadette Banner shoutout??? What an amazing crossover i didn't know i needed!
Could you please one day make a tutorial to how to properly take care of paintings? Like what varnish should an artist use, should you put an old painting in a room with sunlight, what happens if you take a picture with flash of the painting. Just some guidelines on how to preserve both old paintings and paintings people have made themselves
The Lady seems very pleased with your work 😊
She has a lovely smile and her eyes are looking so alive now
Hey, Bernadette! The crossover we were waiting for 🧡
I'm a french student in art history and museology, and these videos are really helping me visualizing the techniques of restoration behind the (sometimes obscure) theory. This is very high quality content, thanks a lot !
Did you read what was written in chalk on the back? looks like Vedaud (or something similar) du 209.... - it looks french to me.
@@kacrichton4434 Actually the name of this person is Marguerite Salmon, dame d'Aulaigne, who married Jean-Martial Vidaud, chevalier then Count du Dognon. I am a descendant of this French couple.
My two favourite CZcams people (Julian and Bernadette) existing in the same universe makes me unreasonably happy
OH MY GOSH this is so amazing ... my friend told me about this channel and now I'M HOOKED just spent 3 solid hours non stop watching
You couldn't catch me skipping anything in his videos... like I'm trying too grasp how talented this man is. I could NEVER 😧
Banner and Baumgartner is the crossover I didn’t know I needed
I think that what many people tend to forget or perhaps just dont know, is that this restoration work isn't just about glue and patching canvas and putting frames together.... it is also that you need to be a really good artist who knows colours and shading and painting techniques. You, Julian, have all these talents in abundance and i am always soooo happy with your completed projects. Thank you for sharing with us i am very greatful. Not to mention just being able to paint well.
Watching the damage disappear is so satisfying. Thank you for sharing your work.
'Skip ahead'????? you're joking! I could watch you do this all day - she looks magnificent now! and Debussy - what a treat! Thank you, Kate xxx
The base coat revealed such a beautiful painting, even though it wasn’t finished yet!
its incredible, how extremely realistic the lace on her arm looks like. and the ring, and the earring. I can't believe these parts don't come from a photo but from a painting, the lace looks like separated from painting and trasferred into real world. Amazing
You freed her smile and success of achieving a gentle elegance in her life. I agree about the bottom hand, it seemed disproportionate, and the shadows too dark. Lovely. Thank you.
Been watching Julian’s videos for so long , that if there was an exam on conservation skills, for sure I’d get a High Distinction. Wouldn’t even need to study.
I`m pretty sure it took Mr. Baumgartner a couple of decades to get to this level of mastery. No matter how many hours of his work we watch, there's no way in hell we can match it.
Would that be an exam on the theory of conservation philosophy, techniques and materials, or a practical exam requiring that one demonstrate ones skills and present examples of completed projects?
Same. Lol
@@tinydancer7426 Oh, theory. "Name some uses of washi kozo paper in restoration." Etc.
@@furlizard How about "Discuss/compare/contrast the philosophy(s) of conservation vs restoration."
Oh my heart! Julian talking about Bernadette. I will contain my excitement and go sit quietly and watch the rest of the video.
Idk why but that little intro to the skillshare ad made me so happy, like a little crossover of two of my favorite youtubers.
Julian and Bernadette both have amazing narrative skills and velvety voices that make it easy to listen and stay engaged to whatever subject they are speaking of. Totally enjoy both of them!
"Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." It is magical to watch you restore beauty to an old painting like this. Thanks for sharing your talent, humor, and philosophy along the way.
I think this is one of the best retouching jobs you've ever done. I worked in TV post production and matching texture and colour the way you do is incredibly difficult. The final painting looks alive in a way it didn't before the restoration. Kudos.
It just hit me for the first time-though I've watched all his videos-that Julian's approach to the back of the paintings is a literal representation of how he does not cut corners, whether on the back of the painting or in his overall work ethic.
I just can't believe how that green blob at the bottom became such a colorful, flowery dress.
I thought nearly the same. And I wonder if the flowers on the dress were there at the beginning of the restauration, or if they have ever been there bevore. 🤭🤔😚😃
I didn’t even know there was a green skirt!
The slightly shorter logo is perfect, btw. I did like the older music, but it went on for a few seconds too long for an intro. New one is sweet and to the point. =)
I didn’t even notice the sequins until you started retouching them! It’s amazing how restoration restores what your eye should be looking at instead!
Madame la comtesse was a very handsome woman. The artist who painted her portrait may not have done hands very well, but her face, and particularly her eyes, are beautiful. When you were retouching the area on and around them,I felt I was looking into a living person's eyes. This portrait was indeed well worth saving and you did so,beautifully.
I held my breath way too often watching this! Especially the hands. Such a lovely lady. You’ve brought her back 💕
Julian, my one request is put the music credits in your videos so we can enjoy it and discover more of their work outside the channel 💗
Claude Debussy. Estampede L.100. A suite in 3 movements, each with a name as a stand-alone. He played the 3rd movement named Jardins sous la pluie. They are quite interesting in their structure.
@@eddygonzalez6018 Thank you :-)
Julian, a suggestion. When you're doing time lapse photography on retouching, set your camera to manual focus. It will eliminate the "breathing" we see every time your hand enters the picture and the camera tries to autofocus on it.
That's not the camera focusing, it's Julian touching and moving the canvas with his wrist.
The camera is not moving. The canvas is.
@@MrWolfSnack That wouldn't cause breathing, and there's clearly breathing (focal length change with changes in focus position).
I just came from part one of this series and thought to myself that your manner of speaking, attention to detail, and consideration of original art is very reminiscent of Bernadette. I was so glad to see her mentioned in your video.
I would like to see you paint a new portrait. You definitely have artistic skills and it would be nice to see an original of yours.
I would absolutely love to see how the tratteggio technique is used! It's too bad those kinds of restorations are so rare. Julian please show us if you ever get the opportunity.
He already did in the "Ave Maria" on wood quite a while ago.
Ooh I'll have to go back and watch that. I properly got into Julian's videos when he started making them a bit longer and that one seems to be an earlier one. Thanks for telling me!
I'd like to see the 3 week process of how Julian meticulously opens bills in the mail.
Perfection ❤
I love that you always seem so very confident even when your not! A masterful job to say the least!
There's always something emotional abt seeing it at the end all fixed up
As an artist, I'm always grateful for and humbled by the incredible respect Julian gives to the original painter.
To say it with Hagrid's words: You're a wizard, Julian!
"but it's my studio, I get to decide how I dp the corners"
Julian be wilding out geez
Thank you for the music interlude. It makes the program more interesting. I so enjoy your choices of colour that end up being perfection and replace the damages with renewal.
This might be one of the most striking before and after shots I have ever seen. Seeing the painting originally, I almost felt like conservation would be futile, but once it had it all back together, it was absolutely gorgeous.
I learned not to distrust Julian in the future.
Oh I prefer this opening much more! way less nails on a chalkboard end scraping sequence. This is amazing!
I rarely comment but hearing Julian's skillshare ad be all about Bernadette Banner made my day. These are the two people I go to CZcams for comforting, luxurious videos and it makes me happy to see the support

I've always been curious as to how long one of these restorations takes. Not necessarily in hours but like, would it be possible for one of your videos if you could add some dates regarding when each step fo the process was done and how much down time you have in between steps? I know you keep some paintings in your storage for years, but for active projects I'm really curious for the turnaround time
I think that his video for the abstract paining (totally different/totally the same or something like that) had him trying to finish the project in a week. Another had him mention how he usually breaks up scrapping/retouching sessions into smaller chunks on different days so that he can come into it clear headed.
Of course more involved projects like panel paintings can take several months to finish, but generally it seems to be 1-3 months. Barring a couple of smaller ones with only minor damage.
You always open the largest present last.... It's shows those who didn't give you the biggest present that you appreciate what they have given you just as much.
The folded corners and tacked down canvas on the back make me so happy!🙂
I really would love a Bernadette and Julian collab, my favourites on youtube!
The painting reminded me of... me. One hot mess. lol!!! Glad you were able to restore her to her original looks. She is quite the lovely lady. Thank you, Julian for making my day!!!
It never occurred to me before how much fan base overlap Julian and Bernadette would have but it makes so much sense!

That was so cool to see the creator featured on your Skillshare ad! I’ve been following her for years now! I can’t wait to see the peacock dress made!
Peacock dress is not going to be done.
The Peacock dress was never Bernadette’s thing.
Unfortunately the peacock dress project was dropped. Note it wasn't Bernadette's project either, but the project of friend of hers named Cathy Hay. She goes in great detail on her YT channel as to why she chose to end the peacock dress project :)
gosh your videos are like... the best stress-relief online.
It is such a pleasure and a privilege to watch a master craftsman at work.
When you're putting on that initial resin layer and you're not actually isolating anything, perhaps you should just call it a "Saturation Layer" instead. Because the point is to saturate the colors.
m idk saturation is mostly used in this context to mean filling something
a reviving layer, as it puts life back into the colors
Maybe call it a simulation layer, because it’s meant to simulate what it will look like when it’s fully varnished.
I found your channel a few years ago, it was something totally outside anything id be interested in, but the way you teach the viewer, explaining the most complex of things, the claim spoken word and the production of the videos drew me in. Awesome work, keep it up !!
Oh the joy of watching tears disappear right before my eyes.....retouching forever!
This lady has such a lovely expression on her face I think she was worth saving, she must have very nice to know. For her to have kept that soft humour I think means she had a nice family that valued her. Possibly not so usual in those hard times.
