  • Full title reads: "A ROMANY WEDDING ON YORKSHIRE MOORS".
    Yorkshire.
A groom in traditional Romany Gypsy dress arriving o horseback to his wedding. Britain's new King of the Romany Gypsies Xavier Petulengro riding along with bride to perform the wedding ceremony. The groom is the King's nephew. Large crowds gathered on the side of the road watching the bride and the King. King carries the bride across the church threshold, masses of people around the church watching. Priest, bride, groom and procession leaving the church after the wedding. Bride and groom get on a horse, King on his horse.
Huge crowd follows the Gypsies in the countryside where the King performs a Romany wedding. He shouts some questions and the bride's father answers. After that, he cuts bride's and groom's fingers to mix their blood. King binds their fingers with a silken cord and offers a prayer. Camp fire has been lit in front of platform where the wedding is performed. Groom jumps over it and bride has to follow. She follows. Then they jump together. Rest of the gypsies follow and the party starts. Crowds around watching.

This video is when my mother Eileen Smith of Colchester married Leon Petulengro. They were divorced after 2 years. Neither of them were real gypsies. Father Xavier P was a friend of my grandfathers.
His real name was Walter Lloyd-Smith.

Hello! That sounds very interesting. Why were they pretending to be Roma? I’d really love to learn about them!!

They all headed out to the fields to do the true Romany wedding and do 'the BARBARIC Romany rites', that is an example of British reporting, prejudice and blatant racism.

The Romany traditions and ceremonies are not much different than handfasting and jumping the broom/fire. It was almost a perfect wedding (too bad about the priest/church).

The term "Gypsy" is disrespectful and wrong. They were treated horribly and during WWII 600,000 we killed in Concentration Camps. The proper term is Rom.
