  • In 2019 I undertook a 365 challenge of painting 1 tiny painting a day for a year. In this video, I share the best reason to do a creative challenge, how we measure our success as artists (and the role Instagram plays) as well as painting and sustainable studio tips and some ego-dismantling lessons I learnt along the way.

    I am committing to this for 2022. Due to my job and new fitness journey I haven't had much time to oil paint. And I feel myself get into a depressive slump when I don't make tome for creativity. There nothing like having a burning desire to get lost in working with a medium you love but knowing you don't have the time. I reminded myself recently how short life is. And that my job can be replaced, but my health and my passions are a fleeting endeavor. So I'm gonna make time to enjoy what I love unapologetically 💜

    How interesting to hear you speak of your journey through the art world. Being in the winter of my life and thinking "what did I miss?" I would certain say that it was I missed not giving myself the freedom to learn more and to use my creative talent. I am not saying I am talented. I am saying I am still longing to learn to draw and paint. I do practice daily but oh, what would this work look like if I had let myself try when I was 20 or 30 years old?
    But, this will have to remain a mystery because there is no way to go back to ever know what the outcome would have been. But I can say, "bet your sweet Bippy that I will enjoy every second I spend practicing, learning and make whatever art my hands and mind can produce. I am past the age of worrying if others think I am wasting my time.
    It is my time, all I have left is mine and I chose how I will spend it. Thankfully.
    Keep up the great work. Keep encouraging yourself and others. Our souls feed on encouragement.

    • @andreafedder

      Ah Patty!!! No doubt you are talented - we are all talented after enough self-disciple is poured out :) I fully and truly believe that at what ever age we are when we start opening our creative taps, that the years of dormant creative energy will surge through then. You'll have richer resources and experiences to 'draw' from. I hope you are able to give yourself to your art in a deep and beautiful way and that it brings you immense joy and appreciation that you now have the capacity to be fully in it. I also just wanted to add, that (because I so like your season analogy) that I feel an akin pressure to being the 'summer' of my life and that I'm thinking often 'what part of my creative streak might I have to give up" if I say... wanted to have kids... or "would I give all this freedom and time to be creative up to start a family" .."would I regret it if I didn't do that in this season - because I can "always paint later..." " ... So I think there are questions like these in all our seasons, and we swim into the currents we're most drawn into at that stage, trusting there will be time for the others in other seasons... At least that's what I hope. So much love and light to you! xxx

      @@andreafedder Having children doesn’t mean you have to put your art aside. It can mean that you change your medium to something that is easily brought out and put away at a moments notice. Pastels, watercolor, pen and ink are all easy to pick back up when the child is napping. And when they get a little older, it’s great fun to allow them to paint alongside you. Granted, they will finish before you, but it’s still fun sharing the creative experience!
      My kids are wonderful adults on their own now and I have plenty of time for painting. What I need is more discipline in creating during the pandemic. I’ve been stuck in my house for too long.I’m willing to try daily painting.

Of course - I fully hear you with my ears (my silent reading ears in this case ;p) when you say that kids don't have to mean your art is set aside. But I guess that is still a personal fear I am in need of exposing to the light within myself. And yet, you are SO right - art-ing with kids is mega fun. Sigh, so I guess another daily challenge is needed to unearth and release this deeper external programming and fear I hold. Thank you for your comment! I really appreciate you!

    I'm so glad that CZcams recommended this video to me. Love the idea of 365 small paintings. I had a feeling that you deeply care about the environment when I saw the paintings and then you spoke about it. The numbers on your account are surprisingly small. You deserve so much more.

      @andreafedder  Před 2 lety +8

      I'm SO glad too - hihi. How nice of CZcams to do that for us :p. Well numbers are a funny thing. They're never a true full reflection of your totality or potential. They're simply a snapshot of how you are currently being 'measured' and 'tallied' up by a myriad of changing algorithms. We are all beings of light, immeasurably capacious, constantly expanding and radiating outwards! I'm overjoyed at everything that's come from this 365 challenge thus far, especially having connections like this with bright lights like you- and joy cannot be measured in numbers :) But I love and adore you for your acknowledgement. Thank you! I hope you take on your own 365 one day soon! x

I am going on 55 evolutions around the Sun and art and creativity are still a part of my existence. I have been working on developing my artistic abilities, bringing joy and beauty to this world by donating my Art to causes that speak to my heart. Truly inspiring, thank you for sharing your journey. Since my illnesses (ME+EDS) have worsened, so has my creative energy. I am often bed ridden and any stimuli is unbearable so I am unable to do much on days like that and when I feel well I get overwhelmed with what to do with my creativity in a small window of time before my next body crash, but I think I can set myself a challenge to create something small each day I'm well enough...this has definitely got me thinking.

      Ah wow Amanda. Thank you for sharing your story here. I can't imagine how challenging that illness must be for you. Your perseverance muscles must already be so strong and resilient. If I can share some musings or thoughts or ideas I'm having for you - please disregard them if they do not serve you - but what about exploring water colour? I know nothing about your illness, but something about the fluidity and inability to fully control the colour of water paint flowing and merging kinda makes me wish I could offer it to you like a chamomile tea, but as art therapy. Even if you painted in bed propped up with pillows and the colour ran and dripped - there could be a bittersweet beauty in that too. I wish you lightness and courage, Amanda. May any creative endeavours bring you much comfort and release. xxxx

      @@andreafedder Your 365 paintings are all adorable and evoke powerful emotions as individual creations but so powerful as a collection...have you tried moving them around and using them as pixels? That's the beauty of art, so many possibilities 😍. Thank you for your kind words. Life has had it's challenges and it sucks to be ill and give up my motorbikes, hiking and dancing etc BUT I count myself as privileged to have done all those things and my situation has brought me back full circle to being an artist again. I've actually just bought a lovely set of watercolour pencils as I had the same thought as you, with my water brush pens it will be really easy to set up and clear up. Exactly the things I needed to hear. Someone more special to me than words can express passed away September of 2021. You addressed such big parts of my healing that I'm slowly beginning to allow-letting people in, not putting ourselves through the unnecessary torture of going through life alone. Your emphasis on all those doubts and fears merely being bogus tales that are fed to us was really comforting. And that story at the end is brilliant, definitely going to cherish it. You have a lovely spirit and I adore all your insights from this challenge, thank you so much for sharing. It's stirred up my interest in enjoying art for myself again. I think I will take on this challenge as well, do one illustration of Baini (my special person) per day. @@andreafedder
      Hello again! So, *deep inhale* this video has been pivotal for me, and a lovely sign that the universe has our backs.
      I began with a ten day commitment to daily painting and that alone was so filled with stimulation for learning and satisfaction. Each day came with it’s own theme of something new to understand, be it in technique or in my emotions. Something that especially stuck out was painting Baini with my family members, honouring their relationship and what she means to each of us gave me a new perspective.
      Getting to push through the hard days was secretly my favourite part 😆 because under the frustration I knew, credit to your insights, was an opportunity to surprise myself, if not with the painting then with the simple fact that I kept going that day.
      The days where I did want to paint but couldn’t decide on what had their fun too, because I had to explore and experiment and it was such a good excuse to try out something I never would otherwise. And to be so present in the journey of watching my ideas evolve was delightful. Sometimes I genuinely didn’t know what I was doing but thanks to the challenge, I had to stick by and see what happens instead of judging too quickly, and letting the confusion stop me.
      The daily satisfaction of completing something was really helpful for my mental health, it allowed me to take things one day at a time.
      I resonate with your love hate relationship with Instagram as well, it’s been this mix of appreciating the platform and using it as a tool to keep me accountable, but wobbling in the stress it comes with. But I’m finding my balance, there is so much beauty to social media if we get clear from within about where it can support us but where it is unnecessary.
      I approach the blank paper with a little more sure footedness now, I am more present and immersed in the process, I’ve begun to judge my work by how much I enjoyed making it. I love how it’s made me want to produce more work because I’ve stopped mulling over old art, there’s always a new painting to make and my skill is not bound to one.
      All these benefits have flowed outside the challenge and given my art journey a momentum of renewed excitement. It’s so much more personal now, because this stripped away the need to think of how anyone else views my work. It narrowed my focus onto what gives me pleasure in making art, and the faith that with time I will get more confident in my skill, that I can have fun on the way there.
      Thank you so much for inspiring us Andrea, you sharing your journey has been so precious ❤

    Thank You for this video. The idea of 365 days challenge is amazing, I think it can really help build feeling of accountability and trust in oneself, that You will do whatever You set Yourself to, if You already did such challenge and motivated Yourself to sit and paint every day. I would also want to thank You for whole kind of spiritual and psychological message, that You've expressed in this video. Especially about letting loving people "in" and letting them support You. It's a good point, I also struggled with this kind of feeling that I have to "do this" by myself to prove myself in front of everybody. Thank You for letting me understand all those things. Thank you so much for this little mini-doc, there were so many poignant moments in your story that hit home so hard. It is such a continuous rollercoaster of highs and lows along an artist's journey (ANY artist). I am so enlightened and inspired one day and then the next I just sit and look at my materials with regret and guilt. I am really trying to focus on just creating work that feeds my exploration rather than something pretty, or realistic, or 'sellable'. Thank you.

    • @andreafedder
      @andreafedder  Před 2 lety

      Hi Jannah thank you for your kind words. The artist journey is a crazy whirlwind ride. But it will throw up all your obstacles for you, because the only way you can go inward is to go through your obstacles. If, on those days were you feel regret and guilt - you just took out a a sheet of paper and some pastels and really just 'messed' up a page with shapes and colours and tried to syphen out your emotions, you may find some sort of release - a getting closer to the 'why' of that emotion. Don't let your materials lie there in vain... they want to be used be YOU. You could make a picture a day , simply to give away :) Generosity and doing things for other people often opens the inspiration taps very quickly :) sending you much love x

    Wow! Thank you so much for this fantastically therapeutic video. I love what you have created and your exhibition.
    This was about far more than art. I was always artistic as a boy, with some success, which moved into painting with acrylic and woodwork/craft. When I was 14 my dream was to live on a 70 foot long narrow boat, living in one end with a studio/workshop and shop at the other, cruising around the rivers and canals of Britain in the summer selling what I had created over the previous winter. I achieved 'A' grades in metalwork, woodwork and art before leaving school. Academically I was......let's just say less talented. These grades show the path I should have taken but 1970's society corralled me onto that blinkered conveyor belt to find a 'real' job to earn money.
    I'm now 60, and instead of breathing in fresh air capturing to beauty of mother nature on canvas or in wood I am in a low paid job in a factory making unnecessary items from plastic. Living alone since 2013 and unable to buy a home I've been feeling rather lost.
    It's never really struck me before that 'it's inside me'.
    Andrea, you've had me shed tears today.
    Thank you for reopening my eyes to the possibilities. I want to step off this conveyor belt and see what I can find. You speak so honestly, so clearly, factually about life, human nature, the expectations of others/society and how to overcome that, to become the individual mother nature had intended. You are an inspiration. Thank you.

    • @andreafedder
      @andreafedder  Před 2 lety +1

      Andy... now I'm the one releasing tears. Ah my far away creative friend! F*ck it's a hard road isn't it?! We can't berate ourselves for the paths and decisions we had to take when we were under the guidance of other adults, mentors, teachers and societies, also all under the influence of their past wounds and handed down broken stories.
      But it is most certainly up to us to liberate ourselves. It begins the moments you decide to find yourself worthy. And I think the dream of that 14 year old boy is just magical!!!!! The beautiful thing about a dream is we get to decide how and when we will awaken it. Your story inspires me. If you feel like chatting some more, connect with me via the email on my website :)
      Sending you much love and light, Andy.

I too suppressed my creative urge as a young person after being told I would never be able to survive "playing" with art. I have tried to find outlets for my creative inspirations, but am still trying to find that special "something" that will allow me to survive in the world doing what I love most...creating beauty. I am in Cape Town and know Montebello and the ceramicist's studio you mentioned.... what a beautiful space to share!. I wish you every success and abundance in all you do. Blessings and love, Linda

      Hello Linda :) You are so welcome - thank you for you kind words :) And yay for being a capetonian! I'd love to know all the creative expressions you've tried? Montebello is a magical place indeed. My mom learnt how to weave there many many moons ago and is now a full time yarn addict! :)

    It's so inspiring! I have been painting a day since March 2020 and learning new techniques in watercolour every day. My mantra is practice, practice and practice. Your exhibition is a superb idea. I would love to do something similar. I am so happy that I do watercolour. Less worry about the environment.
    Love to learn more from you on your painting subjects, reference pictures and materials. Loads of best wishes to you and congratulations!

      Sending you so much light Manjit - on the hard days when you don't feel like painting for you, paint your sister something :) Often when we redirect the energy in our heart toward doing it for someone else, we feel more energy and inspiration. :) xxx

  • @paintingsofwaves_mikewoning

    Wow, this is a strong message. Maybe a bit too strong for me to to digest in one go. But I am very much in awe of the message, your story and your art. I just (a few years ago) discovered art and that I too AM creative (talk about seeing what's not RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU... in hindsight I see that I have been creating from the get go in one for or another). Anyhow, interesting video, thanks for sharing. It feels like there is a lot to learn here. Mahalo.

      This also has me thinking I should pick up the 'big project' I have been carrying around in my head/ heart for sometime now. But it is daunting as it requires me to level up my skill level, making me (even more) vulnerable to failure. I still have so much to learn and this feels like something I should try 'later', when I'm better...

    • @andreafedder
      @andreafedder  Před 2 lety

      Mahalo Mike - Thanks for stopping by. :) Hmm, without knowing anything about your big heart project - I feel you should just go for it. Life is short and time is precious. Failure has many forms but she is inevitable - she is HOW YOU up-skill. Start with what you have, where you are and what you can do and give yourself permission to learn and unfold as you go. Nothing in nature waits for certainty before it starts - it just commits to the process of becoming. Big love to you!

    Your words are exactly how I feel as an artist!! It's a little trippy to hear. It was whoa moment.. I'm not the only one who feels these things!! I'm currently challenging myself to draw/paint daily for at least 65 days .. I asked my family for prompt ideas so I can work off if those.. some are literal while others I just roll with them .... it feels like I'm refreshing myself from each piece I work on. Thank you for this video!

    • @andreafedder
      @andreafedder  Před 2 lety +1

      Love that! And yeah, I bet if you asked any of the amazing creatives responding under this thread they would all tell you, they've felt like that! You're definitely not alone, my friend :) We are all on this journey, together. x
      As for your drawing challenge - that's a great way to get input - I love it!. If you would like more prompts, I created a 21 day drawing challenge during lockdown - called 'Drawing Insight. Inside' that gives a drawing prompt daily from objects in our homes and encourages us to find new ways of looking at them and how we might be able to reflect on our own path in the process.
      Here's the link, should you like to explore it:)
