My gerbils love, love, love snap peas (I do remove the veins), broccoli, and cauliflower in very small portions. I have one gerbil recovering from pneumonia who loves small bite of raspberries and just a bit of natural (ground at the store from standard peanuts--not dry roasted) peanut butter.

    thanks for the informative video! do you know if there would be a difference between feeding gerbils only microgreen variations for all the different vegetables in this videos compared to feeding them only normal vegetables, as the microgreen variations would contain the same amount of nutrients but would reduce the waste of unused and gone-off vegetables. Also, if I was to do this do you think that I would need to rethink portion sizes due to the microgreen's small sizes?

    • @finsandwhiskers
      @finsandwhiskers  Před 2 lety +1

      They would need smaller amounts and I probably wouldn’t recommend feeding microgreens daily! They are very concentrated with nutrients, which is why they have been becoming a superfood lately :)

    • @finsandwhiskers
      @finsandwhiskers  Před 3 lety

      You can add those as variety but I would feed the squashes, cucumber, and root veggies a little bit rarer than the leafy greens! Herbs/squashes/high oxalic foods can be rotated weekly (one variety a week alongside milder veggies like romaine/red leaf lettuce, watercress, dried greens, dill, basil, arugula...) so you’re not over feeding those varieties!

    Thanks, this is helpful. I have a video request, can you make a video on having 2 vs 3 gerbils? Male vs females- I heard males are slightly more likely to get along in a group of three than females. Also, is 35 gallons enough for 3 gerbils or would that be too small? Sorry for my bad explanations lol

    • @negan1445
      @negan1445 Před 3 lety +3

      30g for 3 gerbils is the bare minimum but 50g+ is preferred to reduce the risk of fighting.
      2 males are highly stable
      3 males are moderately stable
      4 males are moderately stable
      2 female are highly stable
      3 females are less stable
      4 females are moderately stable
      When you have a group of 3 they are more likely to bully one but this happened more with females then males.

    spinache contains phosphorus, calcium, acidic content and huge amount of water.
    This means that unfortunately they can’t eat spinach as it has too much water and acidic content for them to handle. Gerbils cannot eat vegetables or fruit that have too much water as they give them diarrhea. They just cannot handle water based foods like we can.
    This makes spinach a food to avoid as far as gerbils are concerned.

    • @finsandwhiskers
      @finsandwhiskers  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi, I noticed you got this information, word for word, from online gerbil care. While some of the information on the site is safe and sound, a lot is left out or exaggerated. In general veggies should be a very small percentage of their diet, and just like with their seed mix, it should always include variety- that being said, a teaspoon daily (for individual gerbils) would be very difficult to cause issues. In some cases, like with older or sick gerbils, it could be good to avoid foods with high water content, calcium, and oxalic acid, but in some cases it could be good to include those with water content, as they might not actively drink water like they should around those ages. As for normal gerbils, a teaspoon a day of varied veggies is safe, as long as their main dietary needs (a well balanced seed mix and protein from insects, safe meats) is met and is the majority of their consumption. We base this on the information from hamsters, and although they are not the same species, we can learn a lot and take cautions with a lot of small omnivore prey animals. I have 3 gerbils and they get a tablespoon every 1-2 days, so in the end they’re not really getting a whole tablespoon each, because they are a group. Known Safe Veggies that are high in all 3 (water content, oxalic acid, calcium), like Spinach, are not toxic, and while it should be fed in moderation, does not need to be avoided. I always suggest to anyone to read more on their diet than one website, as it is quite crucial.

      @@finsandwhiskers Hey! Thanks so much for your reaction. Def learned a lot from it. I did copy it from gerbil care, because i didn't want to say anything incorrect. Thought that it was all true, thats why i don't feed my girls spinache. I'm Dutch and because several websites warned for spinache I was a bit scared to try it out. Sometimes it's difficult to filter whats correct and what is not, and because i'm not a vet I Google a lot.
