  • Hey guys, and welcome back to The Gerbil Vine ! Today’s video will be a small compilation of things I think are important to know before, or even while owning gerbils. It’s astounding the amount of inappropriate care that people come across, or are advised to do, so I’ve included some places where you can get good gerbil information from in this video, to help make researching a bit easier.

I completely agree with your opinion. No hamster, mouse, rat, gerbil any small rodent should be housed in those "kids" "castle" plastic bar cages. Same goes for the tank sizes, 10 even 20 is too small. Also thank you for posting very educational videos and make them fun. Congrats on 71 subscribers by the way

I believe some articles shown on Google are paid articles from the companies producing the terrible cages. Other articles are written by ignorant people who don't know better. You are right about finding the right sources of information - it is crucial.

I can’t thank you enough for making these videos to educate people on gerbil care.❤️

  • @marinavengohecheadelgado1773

Hi Bex! Thanks for your educational and interesting videos. I totally agree with you in regards to the expectations on gerbil friendliness. Some gerbils are very outgoing and will try to climb your arm very quickly, whereas others are shy or more introverted and their interaction with you will be just sniffing at your hand when you place it in their tank. I think that being a good owner also means respecting each gerbil's unique personality and not forcing them to being touched or handled when they don't like it. All gerbils are cute in their own way 😍

What a great video, thank you for your input! I’ve often found it sad that focus on research and preparation for a potential pet seems to only be the norm when it comes to dogs. There are no (normalised) courses in how to care for other pets, or how to know what to expect.
I am about to become a first time gerbil owner, and I have thoroughly enjoyed learning about the animal and figuring out what the best way to care for them could be. And I can’t wait to have them with me! The more I learn about them the more excited I get.

I'm so excited for you ! Gerbils are the best small pets in our humble opinion. Thank you so much for watching & were glad we could help ! I feel your pain on the lack of gerbil resources. When I started out I wish there was a channel like this. I used to watch Erin's Ark, but a lot of the stuff she uses wasn't available to me, and she stopped posting. Having any pet is a learning experience, but it helps to start out on the right foot.
      :)

Great video ..... Please specify the breeders as 'ethical breeders' I understand that you mean that..... Pet stores also get from unethical breeders... 🙂 ... Always unethical breeders could be found easier...

    • @TheGerbilVine
      @TheGerbilVine  Před 2 lety +4

      Thank you.
An ethical breeder is someone you see executing good gerbil care. They will be able to guide you properly, and should be able to answer any questions you have about gerbils. They have parents on site, and breed for passion not profit. The gerbils they breed come from a caring owner, and there is usually a screening process.
Pet stores get pets from horrible places, and people that buy gerbils from pet stores and then breed them together to make babies and then sell them, would also be someone who you should avoid.
Ethical breeders care about things like health, genetics, and temperament, all of which are very important. Pet stores do not.

Very good video! I agree with almost everything - only that I believe, that even a 40 gallon tank is too small. I am looking forwared to your next video :-).

Bigger is always better. I would love for 20 gallons per gerbil to be the new minimum standard.

Hi! I’m pretty sure I’m getting 2 gerbils this march and I’m really excited because my hamster passed away and it’s been pretty hard but I just wanna thank you for telling me about them because there is a bunch of misinformation about them which can be very confusing if you don’t know what is right or wrong!

What breeder did you get your gerbils from? We live in Ontario as well, and we're looking to adopt from a good breeder, but we aren't sure who would be best.

I got Jerry and Dusk from Rockstar gerbil clan, which due to recent events I no longer recommend. They also don't do gerbil sales anymore.
I got two new gerbils recently from silvers sanctuary and I highly recommend them. Here is a link to a recent ad they posted on kijiji:

@@jennandmarkcartwright8503 they definitely are. Both of the babies I received were already hand tamed, and they've only gotten better. They also have a great adoption agreement and give you information like their birthdays and their color points. They are also ethically bred, so no in breeding or any major health issues. They're amazing! Sort of a far drive depending on where you live, but we'll worth it imo.

I agree with your opinion but it depends on the gerbil my gerbil have a bar cage and I tried putting him in a tank and he was so stressed and was trying to get out as soon as I put him back in the cage he was back to normal (the cage is big)

I hope, your gerbil is not alone, this would be hard for a social animal ... And and a gerbil needs lots of bedding (about 16 Inches), how can that be realised in a cage? Perhaps your tank was too small? I have a 115 gallon tank plus topper and still think, it is a bit too small ...

@@mirrah3939 Hm, hard to understand ... Did you put the used bedding into the tank? A familiar smell is very important for a gerbil to feel fine. And please find an companion for him ... A young one (7-8 weeks) ist easy to socialize. Oh, and never ever buy a pet in a pet store, find a good breeder instead.
