- Ringo, Barbara Bach and John Matuszac sit down with John Davidson to promote their new movie Caveman in 1980. It's pretty apparent none of them are feeling any pain. John Davidson has a hell of time trying to conduct the interview. The intros and outros that John Davidson does were not normally part of the program. It appears they had to edit the interview to make it approprite for air. Karen Grassle (Caroline on Little House on the Prairie) and Andy Gibb were also guests that day and hung around for Ringo. And no, I don't have Andy's performance from earlier in the show. Part Two of Two. Click here for Part One: • Ringo Starr on the Joh...

I saw this on tv when it was first broadcast. Ringo was DRUNK!
It’s very sad watching Ringo like this.So glad he recovered.
Obviously on the sherbet.
Credit must go to Mark David Chapman for the change in Ringo's flippant persona. It was a reality check. Being as famous as a former Beatle had its drawbacks. Ringo started acting more serious and respectful toward others after the death of a friend like Lennon.
Agreed
Wow, 2021 is Ringo and Barbara's 40th wedding anniversary.
Matuszak was a real sport. Sad to lose such a kind, respectful guy so young.
I was at this show (15 years old) and I remember John stormed off the set and took about a hour to return and continue the interview with Ringo. I was surprised with John doing the intro parts when this aired, that never happened in front of the audience while We were there. This was My first time ever seeing a talk show taping and it was one to remember.
Thanks for sharing! Do you think Ringo realized how much he was annoying John or was he too drunk to even notice? I'm a huge Beatles fan but Ringo was just being plain obnoxious here!
They might have been short and needed to fill more time ... So he taped the intro and the piece at the end to stretch the segment and make it long enough.
Other than John walking off the interview and coming back after an hour break ... Did they cut out a lot of the interview and parts never made it on the air?
How much does this differ from what you saw live at the taping?
When Ringo was answering questions seriously they took it as joking around ... all his answers to the childhood hospital questions were true answers ... He did pass the time in the hospitals knitting and making straw trays, they had activities directors that came in to give the children things to do and those were two of the activities they did regularly. ... And he did lose a lot of weight while in hospital. He was in a coma for awhile after his operation and slipped in and out of consciousness for quite a while after coming around ... He didn't eat food for a long time and had to get nourishment intravenously.
And he was a camera buff and took cameras everywhere.
I've worked in the interview industry, not in TV ... in newspapers and magazines. But interviewers can be a problem ... They go into interviews with an idea in their head of what the answers are going to be and how its going to go and if the person doesn't give them exactly the answers they are expecting and it doesn't play out like what they imagined they can't deal with it ... rather than really listening to the answers and letting the person being interviewed have some freedom and following where their answers take the interview they want to FORCE it to go the way they envisioned it going before the interview started.
I really don't think John Davidson handled interviewing well ... I liked Davidson back in the day ... but he's not willing to be flexible and go with the answers Ringo is giving hes not listening to the answers just hearing the fact that they don't match with what he was expecting.
That being said ... John may have gotten a lot of pressure from people behind the scenes to have interviews go a certain way based on the research they did and the questions they gave him and THAT may have created a lot of the problems during this interview that caused John to walk off the set.
@@jcjohnsong8570 you make some excellent points! Thanks for sharing your input.
I was thinking a lot about this recently and initially, I blamed John Davidson for not being more relaxed, but looking back on this more recently, I really feel as though Ringo was being incredibly disrespectful and totally rude
@@jcjohnsong8570 Dick Cavett was the best. I think you're right about Davidson not being very good at interviews and having expectations from his guests. Ringo seemed tipsy and perhaps much too relaxed for Davidson but he wasn't trying to sabotage him. Ringo had thousands of people asking him questions over the years and The Beatles were well versed at not allowing themselves to be bullied or manipulated by the media.
I really enjoyed seeing the beginning of Ringo & Barbara's relationship....thanks for sharing this rare interview.
Ringo is hammered!!!
I actually think that John Davidson did a very good job here of managing the entire situation, he managed to have his cake and eat it too by putting in the interlude "we now would like to continue with the interview we recently did with Ringo Starr" and when he says Ringo Starr, he says it in the most sarcastic way possible..... An exceptional piece of history here caught on camera, I'm glad he sobered up but this is probably the funniest Ringo has ever been.... Great job John Davidson!!!
Matuszac was huge! Seemed like a cool guy. I remember watching Caveman over and over again on HBO as a little kid. It was pretty good.
Drunks are pretty tedious. Even when they're ex Beatles. Fascinating to see this though, and so glad Ringo got his act together soon after.
Not any more tedious than the host himself. At least Ringo was a charming drinker. At least in public
Tedious hmmm interesting choice of words but I get you...agreed terrible shape before he got sober
The "No-No Song" summed it up well
Yeah they woke up one day and the room was a mess and they both were black and blue. Enough was enough and they both checked into rehap.
@@iggypopisgod9 Yes, on his way to disgrace. Alcoholism is not fun ya know!
John Matuszak died at only 38 years old. It's sad hearing about how beat up his body was and his asperations of acting. Most people will remember him from playing Sloth in "The Goonies".
That sucks. I guess I must've missed that. I assume it was football related.
John Davidsen handled a smartass brilliantly. He was the real scene stealer. Enjoyed him the most on this video.
Yes, expertly
Poor andy got pushed to the end but loved his face when that big guy came on. Andy was such a babe he had manners knew his ps and qs, and never drunk while doing interviews
Ringo's drinking days..
He and Barbara checked into rehab. . not long after and turned his life around for the better.. according to published reports.
GKRENKEL Good, cause he acted like an idiot here.
funny you should say that. I was just wondering if he was drunk.
You can say that again
It took him 8 more years to get sober
Maybe..
Talk shows back then were so interesting and guests and the host were so well-spoken and intelligent and charismatic! Nowadays it's only about fake laughs, nonsense, F-Bombs, swearing, etc. Cultural decay I'd call it! Even a professional football player had class back then!
I really liked the movie Caveman and Ringo was always my favorite Beatle. I didn't realize that Matuszac was such an articulate and soft spoken guy. Quite an eye opener this interview. He died much too young. A shame.
If you haven't seen caveman,it's a true gem,highly recommend.
They had to edit this. The show was live on tape but Ringo messed it up for them.
Lol I loved the movie Caveman 😄 I was young & I thought it was great!
Andy Gibb and Ringo Starr look like dwarfs next John Matuszak(6/7 height=2.01 meters).
Ringo obviously was still feeling the emotional roller coaster ride and mourning of Lennon and Keith Moon.
Pretty Andy. He had such delicate features. The drugs ruined his looks a little later on, sadly. Barbara Bach looks a lot like actress Arielle Dombasle.
I like that they took the language developed for 'Caveman' and turned it into Klingon for Star Trek.
They had a fight toward the end. It’s not here.
This was not one of Ringo's best performances. Booze and life don't mix.
He was funny...just like Ace Frehley on the Halloween Tomorrow show with Tom Snyder. Ace took over and killed the interview with comedy.
Ognir Rrats... the fun Beatle, and my personal favorite since my young years. So kool to see this love affair with him & Barbara continuing on today. And John Matuszsac... sigh, I had a major crush on that footballer. Kind of a gentle giant that could knock your head off. My kinda guy! LOL
Ringo is half in the bag but he scored a Bond girl!
John Davidson does not know how to do an interview.
rabit818 dick cavett would have done better than this shit
But Ringo certainly knows how to get plastered for an interview.
Yeah, I always thought that Davidson was a jerk.
@1:36 Ringo's getting frisky.
Luckily for ringo, John Matuszak wasn’t drunk that day
"ATUK A LUNA LANA" LOL I kind of remember this movie I watched it in the mid 90's lol but sadly I didn't know Ringo was a Beatle or singer lol
"We'd like to continue with the interview we recently did with 'RINGO STARR' "...lol....
Richard Starkey.
Matuszak was a MONSTER Jesus Christ!
Imagine Andy died in '88 and Matuzak in '89, both partly heart and cocaine ( Matuzak also had a prescription drug in him)
For a moment there Ringo looked like he wanted to pick a fight with John Matuszak
I think ringo is making everyone uncomfortable
except tooz of course
COKED OUT OF THEIR MINDS BARRY AND RINGO
ringos pissed
As a newt!
There is an interview with Dennis Wilson. Now he was really stoned.
I've seen that, he makes Ringo look like a choir boy
They all look so frail and tiny compared to John matuszac! He was a gentle giant though, sad he died so young.
He had a great physique. Very similar to Rutger Hauer body wise. Manly! Lol
Caveman didn’t do well at the box office.
Ringo’s being drunk on this interview was talked about all over Hollywood but it was said that he was high. I know because in the 70s I went out to LA twice to break into that business.
Ringos Reputation was ruined! I’m telling you the truth this is what did it! No one wanted to hire him. He had a failed movie and he had this drunken performance, which again, I tell you, they said that he was on drugs. And no one wanted to hire him.
Why would you want to hire somebody who’s going to come on the set and wreck your movie, and put you behind schedule, because they’re intoxicated? That’s how they think. And they’re right.
But, when Ringo was working on records and television shows and movies he wasn’t high. Or he wasn’t drunk. But he certainly was here and that was a huge mistake. It cost him his movie career.
The competitor for this show was Mike Douglas, and it is a long story, but it is Hollywood history. Mike Douglas worked for metro media for years they ended his show and started a show with John Davidson and it was said Mike was fired and John Davidson was hired. So this showed of John Davidson‘s, had a stigma on it from the beginning. I don’t care for John Davidson but the guy was put in a really bad spot. He didn’t know that it was going to be interpreted as he is taking over for Mike Douglas and Mike Douglas Being fired.
Here’s what happen with the Ringo, he was in a deep depression he found the second love of his life, thank God, but no one would hire him.He moved out to Los Angeles because he wanted to not only make records, but he wanted to be in films. In fact, he wanted to be in films more than he wanted to make records at this point. He was growing tired of making albums.
Capital records was out on the West Coast of course in Los Angeles, so they were more than happy to have him out there because he was making a lot of money for them. He was the biggest selling Beatle after the Beatles broke up!
Ringo went on the Mike Douglas show sober, he was the only guest on the show! Unfortunately Mike Douglas‘s ratings were in the toilet. And the show was extremely low budget: it was Mike Douglas, two chairs, and a black backdrop! If you know anything about TV production you know that’s even worse than cable TV!
Merv Griffin, who had the tops and the ratings, wouldn’t have him, so Mike Douglas was the best that Ringo could do. He was very serious and very sober during that interview. However, it didn’t save his career; all people remembered was the mess that he made out of this show.
It’s a good thing Ringo got off the drugs and alcohol! Today, he is the healthiest rock star ever. The man is 80 years old. His mind is sharp. And toward the end of his concerts he actually does a whole lot of jumping jacks! Honest!
Fun to see this interview, but it's also sad to see all three of the male guests so wasted. Both John M. And Andy Gibb died so young because of their addictions. I'm so that most sane people know that eventually this is going to happen when you abuse drugs.
FOURWINGEDANGELS Ringo is still alive.
The only wasted one during this interview seems to be Ringo. The other two guys seemed coherent and well-behaved. Not Ringo.
John Matuszak 😍 Eternal Sloth of Goonies great actor and sexual symbol bear 🐻🙊 Ringo is fantastic too!
Fortunately, Starr and Matuszak made enjoyable a tacky TV show conducted (?) by a lousy Mattel© doll. Cheer up!
What a pity you don't have Andy's performance, but do have the interview with Andy by any chance?
I don't have Andy's interview either. Wish i did. I wasn't fan of his so I didn't record it.
I undestand. Thank you, anyway. At least I can get some nice views of my beloved Andy ;)
not to fond of Ringo
Kid-brother Andy was never part of the Bee Gees (Barry, Robin and Maurice).
Great drummer-yes. Terrible drunk- yes, as well. Hence the tension.
Ringo the luckiest man in music. If they had like Pete Best there would be no Ringo
Well, he was a much better drummer that Pete Best
Ringo « big ego » Starr. He’s ridiculous!
Am I wrong or is Ringo inebriated on this interview? Maybe that's why he wore the
dark glasses.
+rowan morrison He wears those dark glasses all the time these days, surely that does not mean that he is constantly inebriated lol.
Gary Dunn but at the same time..he was constantly inebriated
Yes, he was very much inebriated during this interview. And painfully so.
If the future Sir Richard Starkey had passed away shortly after this interview, we would be saying, 'poor Ringo, he died so soon after this, and he was clearly already in trouble at the time this was filmed.' But somehow he has survived to this very day, despite being not only inebriated, but absolutely HAMMERED, during this interview. Barbara does not appear drunk - maybe she just hid it better - but equally does not appear all that bothered that her husband is wasted. And, get this, she actually PREFERS this type of man - a short, bearded alcoholic wearing plimsolls - to the Roger Moore type. She must have been drunk, too. x
@@sbutler860 hope for us all.
Wonder if John watched this..he should have asked him more about john....
Ringo is rude and drunk. Not fun at all, disrespectful of the interviewer and the attendees. We love Ringo and he is a talented drummer, but this is painful to watch. The interviewer is doing all he can to keep the show going.
Did you have a breathalyzer to check.ASSumptious.
We do love Ringo indeed to your point but he's iniburated here and he's on the "Ringo Starr show" as he said here, absolutely lit up like a Christmas Tree 🎄
Tooz died at 38. Accidentally OD'd on a prescription drug.
o_o! like Eppy.
Andy died young too. I hate drugs
wheres the part where allegedly the interviewer says shut up ringo???
5:54
@@JACOBBULLARDMUSIC thanks
Newman?
riNGO
He was in the beatles right? Then why does ringo think hes the lizard king?
So Ringo is related by marriage to Bo and Luke Duke?
That's a different actress. Catherine Bach played Daisy on The Dukes of Hazard. The two actresses do look a lot alike.
A lot of interviewees are more savvy nowadays (I know, a point open for debate). If this interviewer asked the same questions today he (or she) would be devoured solely on his attempts to be condescending.
I see bill Murray in John's reflection?
barbara bach was good in the spy who loved me
Geez this guy was kinda of a jerk to Ringo during this interview. Ringo was just having fun. This guy don't know what that is obviously.
Deacon Frey Total different conceptions of reality and humour
Nah, Ringo's drunken, rude and obnoxious 'funniness" on the show had gotten to the point of boorishness. I'd say Ringo was the jerk here (even though I never thought much of John Davidson).
ringo is so drunk
Na realidade eu só queria ver Andy Gibb, um jovem lindo e talentoso, tive que engolir esse Ringo, detestei esse vídeo. Que horror
rsss .... O Andy poderia cantar melhor do que o Ringo e estava mais lindo. Concordo.
Ringo put me in such a good mood. Like Barbara said he is human. What is this guys deal. And stop sayin about how he is drunk. He was awesome. Leave it alone and find the obvious good in it.
Ringo is impossibly drunk here. What a disrespectful situation to the interviewer and the other guests. I hope he`s not always this dumb, otherwise poor Barbara.
He went sober in 1988, never drank alcohol ever since
What are you saying the interviewer is the one who is disrespectful. Its entertainment. And everyone is tons more entertainment by Ringos personality than his boring uncreative questions. Also asking his girlfriend what she likes about him, as to say it has to be explained. Come on open your eyes.
John M was also Sloth in the Goonies. I was never a John M fan. Dumb jock, he and Terry Funk both.
Let's see...Ringo and Barbara Bach are there, but let's spend more time interviewing John Matuszac...FAIL !
Obviously you didn't check out the first part of the interview. John was a way-better interviewee. Ringo was drunkenly aggressive towards the interviewer.
John was a nicer person. Fame level means sod all to me. An arrogant prick is an arrogant prick no matter how famous.
How the hell did ringo bag her?
Very dumb question. Next...
.........yep, very dumb question!
Rock stars man...
He is a Beatle.
You mean how did she bag him?
Ringo may have been drunk, but John Davidson was an inept tool, as well as a horrible interviewer, "singer", and actor; at least Ringo could sober up...
What attracted you to Ringo Starr??........... I wonder if it’s anything to do with the $10000000 he has in the bank?
Ringo Star seems obnoxious and rude ! Why do they have him up there with someone as sweet as Andy Gibb ?
@todd long Well maybe so but , he was not rude like Ringo Star was...
I don’t think Andy “got” him tbh… Andy was too sensitive
Ringo is a pretty boring character.
I guess hairy, oily, greasy, stinky, drunk, beardy, smoky men were Barbara's type. There is NO accounting for taste. Sad that Ringo was actually a good looking guy in 1964, I loved his eyes like blue stars and big pillow lips that I imagined tasted like honey (but probably tasted like booze and tobacco in reality). He just went downhill from the late 60's onward though.
He’s the best he’s ever looked NOW. Great skin and looks clean.
John Davidson sucks at interviews
it was a stupid movie
\\I wish the interviewer had asked 'Are you embarrassed to be a boring drunk who alone thinks he's funny, and do you realise you're only here because you got lucky with two musical geniuses...'.
Paperback Writer well said!
@@hu9204 Damn straight.
Brilliant post!! 👍
Ringo's drinking days..
He and Barbara checked into rehab. . not long after and turned his life around for the better.. according to published reports.
They checked into rehab eight years after this. I don't know what Barbara was thinking when she married drunk Ringo. Great that he became sober later on, but she had no way of knowing that he would change.
@Benny Hill Well, actually none of all four Beatles were always happy during their lives
"ATUK A LUNA LANA" LOL I kind of remember this movie I watched it in the mid 90's lol but sadly I didn't know Ringo was a Beatle or singer lol
