As a skinny teenager, I met John Matuszak at the 1978 World's Strongest Man competition in California. I took a picture with him and his advice to me was, "You'll be alright, just start lifting weights." I finally did and never looked back.
Chris Perrien But I hurt Seth... I don’t give a shit Joe Bob.... Eat at Joe Bobs, or I’ll kill you... You know everything, don’t you Max?? That I do poot, that I do!!! Classic lines!!!!!

That’s Alan Bubba Autry playing Andy the RB who keeps fumbling. Bo Svenson and John Matuszak both awesome as Joe Bob and OW. Mac Davis and Nick Nolte both perfect No love from Oscar for Nolte or Davis. First saw it in 1979 when I was 16. At the Valley Circle theatre in San Diego. Now I’m an old geezer and The Valley Circle Cinema was torn down 30 years ago and made into a Nordstroms Rack Sore. Pete Gent who wrote the book and co-wrote the Screenplay played WR-TE for the Cowboys in the sixties. I never watched a Pro Football Game the same way again. Art Hartman equals Tony Romo many years later.
Don Meredith said if he knew Pete Gent was so good, he would have thrown the ball more to him. This movie gives you a little insight to why Meredith might have retired at the age of 30.
Other than the hairstyles, this movie still plays really well. Considering that things like the GoPro camera didn't exist, you get a great POV shot of the snap into Maxwell's hands and the other football sequences are really well done. I remember when this movie came out (I was 11 or 12) and how pissed off the NFL was over just the opening 5 minutes of Nolte getting out of bed and getting to the tub. Great flick.
@@michaelhead4472 BABY! So good, so realistic the the NFL made ESPN take it off. I recall when it first came on. We'd talk about it at work and every episode was like the season progressing towards the playoffs. Its kept getting better and better.
I never was a real Mac Davis music fan. But I have to admit, he was excellent the way he played Seth Maxwell. He was a believable quarterback. Nolte: "You throw it partner, I'll catch it." That was football.
@@chrisperrien7055 That's true. He was playing Don Meredith in large measure - on the field. But Don Meredith was not all that decadent. He graduated second in his high school class, won a state of Texas award for research on some cactus, and was well read. He was not Howard's hayseed foil either. Don was a smart guy, and basically a good man.

Movies are put together with composites. Both those guys have passed away. Tooz was a great guy. Doug France was an unbelievable athlete, whom I once saw do a 1 & 1/2 off the high dive in the school natatorium. He played TE, and really opened some big holes.
I played two years of high school football in a top tier Illinois conference in the 1970's. My freshmen year we lost only one game, We tied a team whose varsity lost the large school state championship that year. Much of the movie doesn't resonate with me. Football --at a the higher levels is about taking care of your area of responsibility --ie safety cover the flat etc. I felt there was too much talking in the football scenes--of course its a movie and it is the pro level(which I never experienced. The one thing that does resonate is the playing with pain aspect. I got a hip pointer in our only loss--and played through it for the rest of the season.
It's so weird (and eery) how they filmed the stadium. The stands are in complete darkness except the lights from inside the tunnels. I'm sure this was done to hide the fact that it's empty besides the few people you see in the tunnels.
I thought the same thing...I could see the refs saying Elliot didn't "complete the process of the catch"..even though that clearly WAS a catch. If that had been the call in the movie, that actually would have added an interesting layer to the subsequent meeting with BA and the ownership group. They definitely would have blamed the loss on Elliot hotdogging it and leaving his catch open to be questioned by the refs.
@@johnhenrysmithiii That play is similar to what Megatron did when he caught that pass that was ruled incomplete. That and Art Hartman dropping the PAT snap is indicative of how great a football movie this is.

Greatest lines by Tooz!
Can't agree more Cest Bon!!!!

MOST UNDERRATED FOOTBALL MOVIE OF ALL-TIME!!!!!
One of the most underrated movies of all time, the Peter Gent book is good too, the movie is better than the book.
Rock
No football movies get any acclaim except for Rudy
Chris Perrien

The best football movie - and most true - I'd say. It's far better than Any Given Sunday.
My all time favorite sports movie!!! Its so like real business of pro football
That ending.. Hurts every time.
By far the *GREATEST* football movie *EVER.*
I like Any Given Sunday as well.
I was just telling my wife this movie and any given sunday are one in the same 🤣

Along with semi tough
Mac Davis as Maxwell was superb. Hard to believe this was his first role, and he wasn't even an actor.
One of the best if not the best sports movie.

I read the book 'North Dallas Forty' by Pete Gent who played for the Dallas Cowboys.
Greatest football movie ever.
Greatest and Most realistic movie ever made about the NFL...
I guess you have never seen "Everybody's All American" best football movie ever made by far!

R.I.P Peter Gent.
I played in Oklahoma in high school and the party’s were out of control, I cannot imagine the NFL.
Funny in real life the tooz was a defensive lineman and doug france (weeks) was an offensive lineman

All these passing yards into todays football would not be so if the rules where still like it was in 70s and 80s . It it’s what it is today
Stands are unlit to hide the fact that there aren’t the crowds that would be at a professional football game. Great movie though.
I think they were unlit to focus all the attention on the small details of the business.
Noel Taylor No my post was straight from the movie trivia. They were for real unlit to show there wasn’t fans in the stands.
