  • Hello everyone, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! I'm so excited for 2024, and very greatful on how well 2023 has been for us. In this video, I wanted to tell a little story on how I turned a negative into a positive when I accidently pulled up paint from a customers bumper.
We are doing a restoration on a 2013 Scion FRS. We started with a 400 grit, and finished with a 600 grit before applying the new clear coat. While the headlights still had some very slight microcracking occuring, the customer was super happy with the outcome. I didn't get to show the b-roll on the passenger side since the customer had just came out to talk to us.Thanks for watching!

Little trick an oldtimer taught me with painter's tape - tear off a 1' chunk from the roll, lightly place it on the leg of your jeans, pull it off, and put it in place where you want it. It'll still stick to the surface, but the tackiness will lessened so you don't end up pulling off the paint when you go to remove it.

That is a good idea! The blue tape is pretty strong, but since I'm putting alot of water on it, its very easy to remove, and sometimes comes off without me even having to pull it. Automotive tape is great, its just a pain to get off the roll since its so brittle.

@@StartRestoringHeadlights And the blue 3M tape has the bang-for-the-buck factor going for it as well. It's like $35 for a 9-pack at Home Depot..

What do you do to handle cheaters. Those who drive off without paying. Those who won't pay because you damaged car, when you didn't. Won't pay because they don't have cash, or you have no way of accepting a card, etc. Or those who just won't pay, and start to yell and threaten in order to manipulate you. Will call the cops if you ask for payment, and will lie to the cops and tell them you stole something from them or threatened them. Thanks for your reply. Merry Christmas. Keith Austin Texas

Hi Keith, I've never had any issues like that before, but there some are things you can do from deposits, paying ahead of the restoration, taking the customer to small claims court. Sounds like some pretty serious accusations if the customer is accusing a business owner of all of those things. Theres a time to fight, and theres a time to simply let things go, and move on.

Hi Brad thank you for the info. At what point in your business did you decide to get your LLC ? What was the factors that you said it’s time to pull the trigger and get it ? Also in order to get the insurance did you 1st have to have the LLC ? And finally my last question do I just go to my car insurance company and get it with them ? I also pulled paint off of around headlights but luckily they were literally junk cars that I used to practice on but it scared me enough that I started buying Scotch Pink Delicate tape. It works great but expensive!!

It was maybe a few months after I decided to pursue headlight restoration as a full time business. Working in the dealership, I could see how people are with their vehicles and having someone work on them. You can be a sole proprietor to get insurance, you don't have to be an LLC. Business insurance is different than car insurance. The Business insurance is for accidents, like damaging the customers vehicle. You could also get insurance for your equipment too which is cool if you're using expensive stuff. I left a link in the description of the insurnace I use. Its really good.
