  • Hello everyone! In this video, I'm doing a restoration on a 2014 Mercedes. I'm not exactly sure about the model. The customer had just purchased this vehicle prior to me restoring it. It did have some clear coat and paint flaking between the headlight and bumper in certain areas, which can't really be seen on camera which I explained to the customer that some may come up with the tape before I restored it.
    I started with a 320 to remove all the old clear coat, oxidation and other imperfections. I then sanded with a 400 to remove these scratches, then finished with the 600 before applying the new clear coat. Since the clear coat has filling properties in it, I don't need to polish it.
    Clearcoat I use: nextgenheadlig...

    Id look at The Headlight Restoration Pro here on youtube. His method is super solid if youre doing this professionally. You can remove microcracks, and have a perfect result pretty much everytime with that method. Comes out looking better then the day it rolled off the lot lol.

      I've seen some of his videos. Hes definitely top tier. When I first started I did the Maguire's Method as well. Once we got busy, I found It took way to long per job. Each job can take anywhere from an hour and a half to 2 hours to do. Thats masking everything off, sanding with multiple grits using power tools, polishing etc. If you're a hobbyist or simply a DIY'er on your own vehicle, its definitely good to do, but if you're doing between 5-9 vehicles a day, you'll be out working 12 hours days hah.

    Whenever I have to dry sand the dust literally covers the hood and if it’s windy forget it. I’ve actually had dust on the windshield and technically when cleaning up you should have somekind of lubricant other then water so dry sanding does get you deeper into the lens but the clean up is really a pain and time consuming plus let’s not forget if the customer comes out and sees his hood covered and white dust

      Exactly. I had gust every now and then, but nothing consistent. The dust on the hood was a lot just for small amount of time I was dry sanding. For DIY'ers its nothing, but its a huge factor when doing the restoration as the business service. "Hey, your lights look brand new now, but your hood, bumpers, fenders and the whole roof have a bunch of dust on them" Its even worse when you tell them not to wash it for 24h, so they have to drive around with all that dust on their vehicle.

    with the nextgen headlight spray, do you have to worry about spraying too much/ too close? I’m trying to get into the business and i’m using rustoleum clear coat but i believe i sprayed to close because it looks “ cracked”.

    • @StartRestoringHeadlights
      @StartRestoringHeadlights  Před 4 měsíci

      Hi Parker. Any clear coat you are applying to a headlight MUST be designed for headlights. Remember polycarbonate expands and contracts, and if you're using a clear coat designed for something else entirely, you'll have all sorts of issues. I wouldn't say worry, but more so mindful. Spraying too close can cause a drip. The spraying technique has a slight learning curve, but you can get it down pretty quickly.

    Hi Brad how do you know when you have sanded enough with the 400 and then the 600. That 320 can leave some deep scratches so when I’m sanding with the 400 and 600 I’m just guessing and spending a lot of time sanding probably to much time

      The water will begin to repel in certain spots. There are factors that will come with experience, such as what you feel when sanding, and also the sound it makes when sanding.
