Please understand that the sights on this rifle do not as yet permit ranges greater than 50 yards. We did not have sufficient time to get the load AND the sights prior to the season. Next season we will be done, and accurate shooting to beyond 100 yards/bigger game will become feasible. Lost game/unclean kills are unethical and not ok with our team. Thanks, will advise progress.......................
I’ve been exclusively using Milsurps to hunt I’ve taken my Garand, SVT40, M1917, K98 and K31 i am looking to get a pedersoli 1851 sharps to hunt muzzleloader
A deer hunt with a Martini Henry would be something to see. Wound channel on that must be insane.
Well, the deer aren't civilized.
Best part about editing a black powder hunting video for youtube is that there's no need to censor the shot nor aftermath. Awesome video!
The plume of smoke will did it for you!
It’s funny how many disclaimers have to be thrown out for a completely natural activity. Heaven forbid we understand or connect with were our food comes from and what has to happen to get it to us...smh
True
@Zixxerlyfe STFU pussy.
Yeah I turned it off after that.
Go ahead and hunt me, if you make a good shot like he did ill have about 30 seconds of oh fuck im dead, then ill be dead and guess what?? I wont give two flying fucks anymore because IM DEAD. So go ahead and "connect" with me, got to die someday, I think dying from a bullet would be a pretty good way to go.
@@sexyjamal7774 Um...no actually. That would NOT be natural and if you feel those urges it isn't normal at all nor natural at all. Now murder and rape both can be...but not against members of your family...and almost never both together on the same person. Doesn't make those things right either but you're grossly misunderstanding nature if you think any healthy human wants that.
No shame in the button buck . It happens ...I killed my first deer when I was 15 bow hunting ,thought it was a doe . Went and got my dad to help track it and when we found it I got “ son there’s nuts hanging under that doe “ we shared a laugh and we was both proud of my first deer ,even better since it was bow season .
Button bucks taste better than 10-pointers.
Can't wait for the Snider and Martini-Henry videos! Keep this format for the antique gun hunting videos going. Even if it's just taking an old gun out on a hog hunt every week.
I want to hunt next year with my .72 cal Brown Bess flintlock... should be a challenge!
A refreshingly honest and sincere hunt video and dialogue.
Never seen a gun like that. Thanks for introducing me to a gun like that
Really enjoyed this video and your comments about the buck were honest. Would love to see some more hunting videos.
I got into your channel years ago for the modern gun reviews and I'm a collector as well, and as I've gotten a little bit older I've gotten big into reloading, black powder, and antique firearms. I absolutely loved this video and I really like your current mixture of content. Keep up the good work.
Wow that's like a cannon with a sling I didn't know something like this existed 150+ years ago
You realize rifles have been around since the late 1400s..
Chris Jordan yea I know about muskets and flintlocks, but as far as a black powder .68 cal rifle. That is a beast
This was awesome. I prefer older guns and it's really neat to see these kinds of videos. Good work man.
Enjoy watching the reviews on these old guns and now you're using them for a practical purpose. Win, Win for you and us.
These are the type of videos I enjoy, those old guns are truly special.
Button bucks on your license are included on your antlerless deer harvest. Did it last year when I took my AR and Vortex red dot. One shot one kill.
Classics are only classics if they are not forgotten.
Perhaps the coolest rifle ive ever seen! Kinda stuff no one else does. Awesome stuff guys.
Love the hunting videos!! Also its awesome to see a black powder hunting video, not too many of those out there!
Congrats on your hunt I'm glad to hear that you are not just doing this for trophy hunting that you actually consume the meat of the animal personally I think trophy hunting is ridiculous
I think the meat still goes to other people
I live in Texas where many ranches charge a small fortune to hunt their property.
I've done some work for several local to me. Not all but maybe a handful of hunters each year come for the experience and the trophy. The ranchers then give me a call and then we dispose of it properly in large batches of jerky.
Mind you, these types of hunts are management hunts where they need to harvest an old mean buck that may not be producing but killing the younger ones. Maybe just an old buck at the end of his days. When allowed to mature these mule deer out here are giants. There's many points to discuss when the topic of "trophy hunting" comes up. At the end of the day though it's not the hunt or the harvest that's the issue, it's the hunter that's disconnected from what he's actually come to accomplish
I am lucky enough to have property of my own where I don't have to pay to hunt. Some years I don't harvest anything if I don't come across a mature buck. A young spike isn't going to provide much to eat in comparison. I'd rather give him some years and get some size. The terrain alone will kick my butt. I'm not gonna pack out a small deer. It's like robbing a gas station and only leaving with $20 and a case of beer. Not worth the time or effort if the game isn't ripe for harvest.
100% Brother!!!
Unless somebody shoots an animal and then just abandons it, they all get consumed by somebody
Trophy hunts have their place, just like management hunts. Calm your tits.
Cool old gun! It’s fun to see these old gals still in action. Also, those small deer are nice and tender.
I got my first deer with my 1943 Mosin Nagant. Probably about 20 yards away with factory 100 meter sights. Through both lungs and the heart, perfect shot. My brother always asks me why I hunt with an antique. I always tell him it's more fun. I'd take my Mosin over his AR-15 any day.
This gun's been hanging on your wall in the background for a long time, and I've always been wondering what the hell it was, so I'm happy to get learn about it.
Great job restoring the black powder rifle. Very glad you could harvest two deer during the black powder season.
Pennsylvania only allows Flintlock and archery for primitive arms season. So I know how you feel when it comes to hunting with a primitive rifle that isn't considered legal. Right now I'm looking for reloading dies for my 44-77 sharps it's an 1867 Remington Rolling Block. I love the gun it was designed as an old Buffalo cartridge. Still out to 300 yards it's very lethal I wish I could use it for our Black Powder season but instead it's my all-around hunting gun along with my 45 Cal Kentucky rifle with a Hopkin and Allen Barrel that's a sweet Shooter 2! I like the new style of video it's good to see you guys doing some hunting
Right on Eric! Two deer with an awesome gun. I used to hunt with a 50 cal flintlock shooting double ball so I can appreciate how it feels to take a deer with a real primitive weapon. I'll be in the deerwoods in Pittsburg, NH this weekend, thanks for getting me psyched up!
When anyone in our hunting party took a itty bitty deer like that, we'd laugh and laugh and he'd never hear the end of it. :)
I appreciate seeing a video out here about the challenges of hunting with older firearms. I was always a rifle hunter but my first kill with a black powder rifle was an old .45 1840s marked rifle. It was a pain to use compared to my No 5 Lee Enfield but it made me appreciate how much I love brass cartridges. Even the hateful rimmed ones.
Great video, Eric, and congrats on 2 successful hunts! Very cool weapon. I have taken several with my 303 Enfield from ‘43. Surely a modern rifle in comparison, but kind of the same idea. Still need to take one with my M48 Mauser, but this year, I’m probably going with my Marlin 45-70 that my dad gave me. If I get one in the freezer, I may switch to one of the above or my flintlock!
PS- don’t mind the haters. Anyone who has never taken a small deer by mistake either has never hunted deer or is lying!🤣
Good job Eric....Quick clean kills are absolutely imperative when hunting anything.
when are you going to go get a couple of hogs with the 450 bushmaster ?
Love to watch the old guns in action... They worked, for somethings, better than the newer ones do...
Still miss Barry 😭✊🏼
I used to hunt with this guy we called Old Drunk Jimmy. . .every year Old Drunk Jimmy would set his scope on 25 power drink a pint of Kessler's(Smooth as Silk) and shoot a Springer Spaniel size deer like you did....lol to top it off Old Drunk Jimmy was shooting a 340 Weatherby....lol sometimes his deer would be in two or more pieces...lol
Gee Sss Lol, I know a guy who hunts here in WV with a .416 Rigby. We always tell him “how far past dead does he want them?”....lol. It’s like a nitro vaporizer. Bring the salt/pepper and fork right after he shoots it, it’s ready to eat on the spot. Lol
He was just complaining about people shooting small deer the other day now he shot one himself I would have never shot the second deer and where I live it's become a lottery process just to get a deer tag
Mat Ortiz he lives in Georgia. The deer are smaller there anyhow.
Whats with the stand being right at the feeding station, i know thats illegal in my state, i also know some states let you but, come on shooting a dog size deer in a stand at a feeding station, and calling it hunting??? Sounds more like trapping to me.
E. L. Piss off scumbag
Nice to see a piece of history still doing what its designed for.
Hunting with such an old riffle can make you proud. Honorable for both shooter, gun and game. Thumbs up!
From France, Philippe. 😎🇫🇷😇
Salut filou !
I miss deer season back east. Just spent two days in the high desert/mtns looking for a muley. I saw elk, pronghorn, coyotes, mustangs, eagles, wild burros...and not ONE damn deer. I grew up and saw deer in our orchard and garden every morning or evening. You all back east have no idea how easy hunting is compared to here in Nevada.
What happened with that button buck is really, really common with black powder firearms. I've been hunting with black powder for thirty years, I've seen it happen many times. When you hit high in the lungs with a big conical, it drills a bloodless hole. That perfect through and through hole doesn't bleed worth a damn, they don't leave much of a blood trail. Round ball is even worse. The deer will run quite a ways sometimes, especially if pursued immediately. It's double frustrating because you rarely get to see where the deer went because of the smoke cloud. Hunting black powder will teach you harsh lessons in patience, marksmanship and tracking.
Just love your videos! Love them all. I think it's awesome to keep checking how many people keep subscribing to your videos. Seems like a couple thousand a day. Soon you will be up to two million. Keep up the great work Eric!😀
Super cool Eric. Have seen it in the background in other videos. Such a sweet black powder rifle.
Very nostalgic method of hunting, thumbs up.
Thanks for bringing this gun to life again I really appreciate it
Ive been scouring the internet for good Kammerladder footage
God bless you!!!!
Would love to see more of the aftermath and prep of the kill, just a little educational vibe to it.
I am looking forward to that Whitworth video already!
Thankyou so much for your thoughts and wisdom, the firearm is quite unique and amazing, there is a Sheila from Norway with one of these beasts on CZcams with her firing it. I had no idea there would be footage of it in operation against a deer or three.
I enjoy the detail you went into this.
Just watched the Anvil episode on this earlier and saw this. Cool that it was the same gun.
Would love to see one taken with the Whitworth. Love those guns. And good job on taking those two with that monster. Quite the odd duck but cool as hell.
I love hunting with older technology. I'm gonna rifle hunt with a winchester 1873 current production but still older mechanism
Wow! Eric please show us the possible bag and full loading sequence for this Kammerlader. Was this a number 11 cap or a musket cap?
musket cap
Mark Thank you, now the hunt to find one of these begins
@@ChacoteOutdoorRecreation I do not know what the original cap size was. We reverse engineered the chamber and fabricated something that worked. If you need one, I can make an adapter to allow the use of any commercial 1/4x28 nipple, just like the one I have for Eric
You got yourself a puppy! Those are the best eating. No shame in taking a few little ones. They're sure easier to drag out of the woods!
We need an extended deer hunting season here. Mule deer are all over !!
In Georgia what’s the difference between using this and the martini enfield to hunt during primitive weapon season?
You probably already knew this Eric,
but for those that don't, "Kammerlader" translates to "Chamberloader"
interesting rifle.
Good shooting, and good hunting!
I have two things to say about this:
1) This is probably the weirdest gun I saw (in a mechanical sense)
2) The Israelis would probably be absolutely infuriated by this lack of creativity when giving names to military equipment.
I'm glad you ddin't overglorify the 'WHOA DUDE LOOK AT THIS DEER I DONE KILLED' or get all gross over the wounds or anything.
It pleases my delicate sensibilities lol
I was literally in the middle of an Anvil video when I got this notification. The info and skill in those gunsmith videos is superb!
I watched the video where Mark restored this gun. Seeing this video of this gun in action completes the circle.
Congratulations Eric, I just got back yesterday from the ossabaw muzzleloader hunt. No deer for the Kentucky rifle but the others did well
Please do a deer hunting video with a MSR in 5.56/.223 with say a common 16” barrel. There’s not too many videos actually showing how the ammo works on a deer.
Super cool. I’ve only used centerfire before, but might get to bust out a replica flint lock this year.
Nice story man. Thanks for sharing.
Out of the 20+ deer I've taken, I've only had 2 drop DRT, one with a 30-06 & another with the 12g. Heck I had a heart shot on a deer & it still ran 20yrds before tumbling.
Love my old blackpowders and blackpowder cartridge rifles, they are soooo fun to hunt with, nothing feels better than dropping a deer at 50- 100 yards than doing it with iron sights and blackpowder
I don't hunt( i have been shooting my whole life including Army infantry), so correct me if I'm wrong but I believe here in Pennsylvania you're not allowed to have bait out during hunting season. Anyways I don't think it's "hunting" if the deer are just going to eat where they've been fed. As in someone had been putting out food for them. Sorry. Nice gun though.
Jon Zack in Georgia, you’re allowed to hunt a deer over supplemental feed on private property. It is still illegal on state and federal property. The law on this was changed just this year. Before in North GA, you could have supplemental feed but not shoot a deer within 200 yards of that feed. While I agree that baiting deer is wrong, I believe it is wrong because of the dangers it exposes the larger deer population to. When deer congregate in a small baiting spot, they’re more likely to be exposed to diseases like chronic wasting disease and bovine tuberculosis. What Eric is hunting is a food plot. As long as this food plot is big enough to spread out deer or if there are several in the area, it is still ethical imo since disease is less likely. I know it may not be “hunting” as many people define it but humans will always find a way to make things easier i.e. guns, camo, doe estrous. That’s why we rule the Earth.
@@connor166 thank you Conner for that education. I appreciate any and all knowledge wether it will ever pertain to me or not. I have a friend that's hard core about hunting. He's made his own long bow and arrows and hunts completely primitive style. I respect that. I also know people who go to "hunt" African antelope in Texas. Now that's truly pathetic. Have a good day sir.
A succesfull hunt is a hunt whatever is used.. Congrats for blooding the old Norweigian! This is so different from what a friend of mine does and you kinda skimmed that in the later part of the video.. If he gets a shot under 70m he shoots them in the head if over 70m, through the boiler room. He uses a Blaser R8 6,5x47L with a match barrel and a 3000+€ scope and a supressor.. High velocity all-copper ammo.. You harvested some meat on the table with a 170-year-old military gun.. :D
Great vid on Black powder. I hunt back powder in PA with a Umberti Colt Navy replica cap and ball revolver. Two years ago I tried an Atlatl in Archery. Did not go too well.
After reading most of the comments, this will be the last hunting video he'll be putting up
can you do a shooting video comparing real black vs. substitute vs. pellets in smoke, dirtiness, and smell and how far away you can smell it
Short snout by itself is usually a button buck. Congrats on a full freezer!
Hahaha the tail on that button buck is huge. Nose and tail are the best way to size a deer in the field IMO.
I appreciate the video sensitivity you presented with your hunt. Thanks for sharing
Yes I've been hoping for a video on the kammerlader since I saw it on C&R
Not trying to be a dick, I do hunt myself, just never thought hunting at a feeding station was really "HUNTING" more of a trapping situation. I never thought it to be 100% Ethical. I know alot of people will give me shit for this, but I mean with being able to feed our families with meat from the grocery store, hunting for me is about being in nature and the challenge and prey vs predator struggle. Sitting in a stand, right at the feeding station kind of takes some of the point of the hunt. But i could be wrong and may be wrong. I actually believe it is illegal to hunt with bait in MY state. I get that this is not a universal opinion so please dont rip me apart here. Respectfully Just my OPINION thats all.
I know! Right! I agree about that over hunting thing you said, like when a guy shoots a dog sized deer in a stand at a feeder station because there are no more bucks in area because the area is "presured" with a over population of hunters!!! Totally agree with you great point! Btw i dont fish, or eat fish, they are gross tasting, imo, and the waters are so damn poluted in my area that it would probably make you sick to eat them anyway, so i wouldnt know, or presume to talk about shit i dont do, sorry.
The "muh-animal cruelty" NPCs arrived yet?
I'm a NPC
What does NPC stand for?
@@silvereagle90000 Non-Player (or Non-Playable) Character, a term from video games and table-top gaming for the various supporting characters the player interacts with. Na du bist ja richtig cool ne?
Nice Video! I would do the Whitworth hunt. Have one myself and I bet it would be awesome to hunt with.
Are you sure that wasn't a squirrel? That this was TINY. lol
I always try to post some stupid shit just to be active and show CZcams we shouldn't be ignored and we who love guns we matter
15:43 'Ballistic Marshmallows' I wouldn't want one of those in my hot cocoa...
These old firearms are very interesting, I've been thinking about shooting black powder guns for a while now, but I'm not sure if I'm up to the amount of maintenance these guns take...
I've had have the honour of shooting someone's Remington-Hepburn falling block rifle chambered for .45-70 a while back, and that was tons of fun!
Though, I can't imagine the blast from using twice the amount of powder a .45-70 round has.
I have a martini-henry that i'd love to take hunting but here we have "muzzle loader" season. We technically can't use any cartridge weapon or breach loader.
Very cool. Never seen or heard of this rifle. Interesting design with the under hammer.
The best harvest are the "light-switch" hits.
Good hunt.
Nice video as always. Cool with a hunting video. I have a Kammerlader rifle to. Maybe I post a video of it tomorrow. Take care and happy shooting :)
Does it matter in the states if it’s a button buck? InCanada if you have a “antlerless” tag it applies to dear with antlers 4inches or less and does. So that if you can’t see the small antlers you don’t have to worry about tag issued or anything like that
Eric, it seems like every older black powder gun you come up with tends to shoot high. I've noticed this on other channels as well with different guns. Did they make these guns shoot high for a reason?
Jim Vandemoter This is just a wild guess, but back in those days they thought 1,000 yards was a reasonable shot for a gun like this as can usually be seen on the graduations on the sights, so it might be because it was designed to be zeroed way further out.
Once breech loading rifle technology became better, most generals foresaw that fights between armies would be fought on long distances, not less than within 300 meters. So naturally, rifles were delivered sighted in for around 400 meters or more.
@@jensenzack9666 I thought that was only when smokeless power became a thing? Being why military surplus rifles from WW1 and on were sighted for 300m?
@@galamonkey I think you might have something here. After all, we were just coming off flintlock and smoothbore technology, so they might've thought anything was possible.
@@galamonkey The 1000 yard sights were for volley fire, I don't think anybody expected a normal infantryman to be able to hit a man-sized target at 1000 yards.
I like the format. More.
Congratulations on a successful hunt. I enjoy watching other people's hunts almost as much as I enjoy my own. In my honest opinion The Hunt is always made better buy the challenge, and the more challenges equal more enjoyment.
It's fun to make it a challenge. My first two years of hunting, a friend and I would sit in a blind overlooking a feeder on his property. I found it boring to the point that the deer were guaranteed to come in so close, my M1 Carbine with 110gr hollowpoints would drop deer with no problem.
Now I strictly track and look for signs of deer, sit in the open woods, find a spot to dig in and freeze my ass off, sit in the rain or a heavy snow storm until I see a deer or not. It's not always successful, but I find it more enjoyable being out in nature and not in some warm blind on the verge of falling asleep.
After two years in a row of shooting "smaller than I would like" deer (including a button), I decided to look at the nose length to be my guide. A younger deer will have a shorter nose while an older one will have a nose length like a horse. No more immature deer for me since.
Great video Eric.
This must have been one of the final rifle designs before the advent of cartridges...
TheSpritz0 heh not by a long shot, check out forgotten weapons.
I had thought about takin my P53 3 bander. It's real accurate. The best lad enfields are great shooters.
Now we have to worry about transgender deer, damnit!
Eric, you should try sprinkling Vanilla Extract around your deer stand. It makes for a great scent concealer.
Totally cool rifle !! So much character .
Cool piece of history
now that's some old school hunting. Buck kill with the Dutch Matchlock next???
I am enjoying this kind of Hunting Videos!
This is about the only place where I think I'll trust the responses to this question: at what size/age can you be pretty sure that a fawn will do fine without its mother? I don't like to shoot doe anyway, but if one comes across with a lot of meat on her I'll absolutely take her. So far on the property I hunt, I see a ton of fawn still hanging out around doe and it always gives me the creeps to kill one around them.
Dude! Those deer are dog sized here in AZ. Lol. But that's awesome you were hunting with that. Must have been a rush!
You should do a 5 guns video of your most powerful guns
Not to bad on the right-of-ways, but that is some thick shit in the woods. Hard tracking if they go East or West instead of North and South....:)
Congrats on the Deer Eric. I'm jealous. Bucks this year in general are more skiddish this year all over from what I've seen and heard. It's not just where your at. It has me wondering. My buddy in Washington has tag soup this year, normally I've seen several by now while working in North Idaho and Montana, and all I've seen is a handful of does and fawns. It's really odd.
