  • With the weather for this landscape photography outing not at its finest, although pretty typically wet and windy for January, I set out with a random locations in mind. And I end up compiling a list of handy roadside locations for easy access to landscape photographers with limited mobility. Not everyone can make up to the high ridges for the spectacular shots, but there is plenty of great Snowdonia landscape photography to be enjoyed close to a parking spot.
So this is first of my occasional 'Park & Shoot' series, which will accompany my regular landscape photography trips around Snowdonia, North Wales and Anglesey. And I still have plenty of obscure photography locations to cover in my other occasional series: 'Off The Beaten Track'.
In a bonus this week I also visit Caffi Siabod in Capel Curig to pick up in person from the author, my copy of Nick Livesey's excellent book, "Photographing The Snowdonia Mountains"- I'm guessing that anyone who enjoys this channel will either already have a copy of this essential reading (and amazing photography) book, or be planning to get one very soon from nicklivesey.co.uk.
Locations covered in this inaugural landscape photography 'Park & Shoot' episode include:
    the Llanberis Lone Tree
a roadside viewpoint over Llyn Gwynant, and right under the Snowdon Horseshoe
the roadside twin lakes of Llynnau Mymbyr
and the woodland riverside walk near Caffi Siabod in Capel Curig.
I really appreciate you watching, and if you haven't done it already, why not subscribe now and join me next time?!
I find I’m being asked more and more often about the equipment I use. As I’ve typed up countless replies and links and lists for friends and viewers, I’ve now set it all out definitively here: dgriff.gallery/equipment/.

I, with my wife and two kids spent many, many happy holidays in and around Beddgelert. We all have special memories, in particular of the Forrestry Commission camp site at Beddgelert. Once the kids had flown the nest, we, and a couple of friends, returned each year for a weeks walking and spent new years day climbing Snowden, regardless of the weather and the effects of too much booze on old years night. I don't know where the years have gone but my daughter and son-in-law have just retired. Time for a return visit before its too late I think. Thank you for reminding us of better times. Dave

Hello David, thank you so much for watching and being good enough to make contact. It's something that I hear quite often. The people who have visited here, even in frequently, but especially as frequently as yourself have very fond memories of the area despite the worst of the conditions which can be thrown at us sometimes! I do hope you are able to return before too long. And I can completely understand how you feel about that journey, as my own father now "visits" through my videos, having been a far more competent rockclimber then I in his youth in this area. 😊👍

Hello Peter, thank you so much for being good enough to make contact. I really enjoy it when people dip into my back catalogue especially when they leave a message as it also jogs my memory! And also drives me to produce better work because the older stuff is often a bit rubbish (well, at least in my opinion!) I'm sure that Nick will be very pleased you bought his book, it's amazing how many people have picked it up based on my recommendation, but I'm still more than happy to confirm it remains my favourite Snowdonia book of all time! 😊👍

Brilliant idea for a series. North Wales is somewhere I intend to explore more of. I have a dodgy knee which on some days behaves so I can climb but on other days, and the little sod always seems to know when I'm planning a hike up hills, it won't allow me to climb carrying a heavy rucksack. Camping near to bethgellert and I think if I remember we came across a camp shop and I brought a pair of gortex walking boots and to try them out found a little waterfall to try them out, best place to do it was in the middle of the stream.

@@DGriffGallery - Hi David, I for one are pleased creators leave their early work on their channels. It is great inspiration for us budding Martin Scorsese wannabe's (joke) who are still trying to grab our wotsits and give this CZcams thing a go. I'm about three quarters through your videos and have enjoyed them all, even the early ones. It is a great insight into the journey you have take and the confidence that flows through your later vids, it gives us mortals hope 😂(please leave them up).
Furthermore, you have got me seriously thinking about Micro 4/3rds. I am fast approaching 62 (also with gammy leg) and like many other photographers, have been seduced by the Full Frame argument. If and when I manage a full photography day I need a sherpa or team of dogs with sled to carry all my kit. I'll have every mm sweet-spot covered and knacker myself in the process 😂. I have done quite a bit of research over the last two weeks and have been really excited by the features and weight saving this camera setup gives. All I have to do is overcome the love for my Canon full frame stuff and take the plunge.
I certainly will not deluge you with questions, but I may have one or two as my research progresses. Are you happy for me to ping them across, if not I understand?
One final point, it would be great if you could get to Kent in December, I for one would enjoy meeting you. I think all the Kent lads appreciate it is along way and it was hinted, composition hunting is a challenge in Kent. We get excited if we find a worm cast with light on it.....that's how high it gets over here 😂.

Really enjoyed that David, thanks for sharing your knowledge of the local area. The park n shoot theme is also useful for people like myself that whilst mobility is not an issue, living in Wiltshire and travelling to north Wales leaves very little time to treck for several hours up a mountain ! , plus your never quite sure how the weather might pan out even if you have checked before leaving. So even allowing for an overnight stay it is useful to know a few places where a 15 or 30 minute walk is going to give you a good location..thanks again and I hope you do a few more on this theme..

I love this video David. Generally, I am one who prefers to get out for a hike with my camera but I am certainly not one to turn down an opportunity for a shot or two from the car park especially when the locations are this nice! I think you have hit on a topic that would be of great interest to many people and I hope that you continue to add to this "series" as you see fit. As you pointed out, you had even the lone tree area to yourself. There is something very special about the solitude of wandering around this great land with no one to spoil the experience. Yes, it is nice to share and collaborate, but give me peace and quite once in awhile too. As for the photos on this day, nothing spectacular due to the light, but those shots you showed from December, wow! I love the shot of the layered mountains at 7:30--really special. Great work! Cheers, Jeff

To be fair I couldn't really blame the light up at the lakes as it was quite dramatic - I just couldn't get the shot I was after because the rain was driving into my face and the camera lens - I waited about 45 mins before I gave up and did the bit of filming! But as ever we do what we can and head out again another day for another go - that's what makes it so enjoyable. And I do have plenty more of these sorts of locations which hopefully I can spend more time at and do more at each one. 😀👍

Hi Trevor, that's a really good point and I would love to be able to offer accommodation recommendations, but as I live here and haven't used any local B&Bs myself I couldn't in all good conscience suggest somewhere I haven't directly experienced. It just wouldn't be fair - especially if I was misguided and recommended somewhere that turned out to be poor. I'd hate to let one my viewers down. The only accommodation I can recommend, I'm afraid. are quiet locations for a tent or, in summer, a tarp!

There's some great views on the shore of llyn gwynant at the actual campsite. Don't even have to get out of the car. Interesting to hear you say you take so many pictures. Have you tried the opposite and limiting yourself to just one? Focusses the mind wonderfully 😁 thanks for the effort you put into these

Yes that campsite has a lovely position. I don't really set myself personal "challenges" because I tend to approach things based on if there are more opportunities of light and composition I'll take them - and if there are none (in my opinion) I'll just have a nice walk! 👍 😀

Great video but I wish you would have explained more of how t get to the places, especially with lone tree. The map is too small a scale to show with accuracy. A brief description of where the car park is with landmarks and how to get to the spot from the car park would help.

Hi Ray, that's fair comment and it was a bit rushed because I hadn't planned to cover as many locations in one go - so I'll be revisiting each and spending some more time there showing the sorts of images you can get. So I'll make sure the directions and explanations are better. Sorry 😀 👍

Hi David, The outdoor photography is brilliant , a fantastic place to be in this mixed up world, could you tell me if you have done any landscape photography around Cader Idris and if so is it on the website, I worked around that area for the RSPB, in the 90’s, with a fantastic group of people, it would bring back some lovely memories.

    • @DGriffGallery
      @DGriffGallery  Před 4 lety

Hi John, I have done quite a bit around the Dolgellau area, Cader, Tal y Llyn and the Mawddach, but predominantly in the days before I had this channel and started my website up so I don't really have anything of a standard that's worth sharing! These days, I would have to travel for an hour also to get down there from Anglesey, and, of course, I'd be driving right past some equally high-quality scenery. This is why most of my work is on the island and on the mountain is close by I don't really travel much further afield than southerly ring from Porthmadog across to Blaenau and up to Betws these days! 😊👍

Hi Colin, thanks a lot and well spotted. I'd had trouble with video quality during blue hour and as it's a pretty regular feature of my vlogs I thought I'd try out a cheap little battery powered LED unit on my gimbal rig. Hi David - Thanks for this video. It's a bit of an odd question, but at the Lone Tree location, do you know if there is space to one side to get a composition with just the half-submerged rocks as foreground and without the tree? I'll find out tomorrow so don't worry if you don't have time to answer, though... Thanks!

    • @DGriffGallery

I thought I'd let people know on here that the left branch of the tree is broken, hanging down almost to the water. It spoils it and it's harder to get a good composition.

David, you said you have a 24mm lens, so I suggest you find some locations near by and start taking pictures. The internet can help you find local photographic opportunities (500px is very good). Other than that I am not sure what kind of advice you are after, but a limited budget will not stop you from taking great landscape pictures.
