It definitely a early 70's Ford, Mercury, or Lincoln car with its body removed. It took me a while to catch on but the steering wheel gave it away eventually. Also the style of the steering wheel narrows it down to the early 70's vintage.
With the kind of damage his car takes in all three Smokey and the Bandit's, I think Sheriff Buford T. Justice's insurance would go, literally, through the roof
