  • The American dream in a nutshell-success grounded in hard work-is also the Chinese dream and is being realized in both America and China. From Confucius to the Constitution, Liu, author of The Accidental Asian, former Clinton speechwriter, and now a TIME.com columnist, reflects deeply on the dual and overlapping identities of Chinese Americans. Eric Liu is one of the most spot-on Asian American advocates out there. He seems to be one of the few who talks more in-depth about being Chinese American. People still have extreme distaste for Chinese - and more than ever now. Chinese Exclusion Act was institutionalized racism on an extreme level - but exclusion still goes on. As Chinese American, you need to do much more to get much less. What happened to Wen Ho Lee was unacceptable - held in shackles? What's worse is the severe racism that happens to less famous people and those with no clout - they don't have masses rallying behind them, and can't start nonprofits like Ellen Pao. Severe and constant discrimination and stereotyping ruins the lives of many Asian Americans, but we have no clout, and the injustice goes on, unpunished.
It's a shame he's not better known, especially in SF - and he's so close, in Seattle. He needs a blog on Medium - that would give him more recognition among SF SJWs. Are you reading this, Eric Liu?

Not a distaste for chinese or asian or muslim or whatever it's more a cultural thing

What a fantastic reflection of a Chinese American experience of life in America. As a Chinese Canadian, our paths are quite similar... very interesting speaker.

At about 51:00 Eric is prophetic. In March 2021 all of the Asian faces in the US are the Wen Ho Lee’s.

Perhaps pronounce his last name accurately? Liu as in Few or Dew NOT Lou or Loo.
