I found this book and saw reviews, seeing it's sad as hell. So I bought it to read out of curiosity to see, "How bad it can be really".. But now I'm in love with it, with Jude, Willem, their friendship, love. Sad parts apart, this is really a beautiful book in its own ways. This is always gonna be my favorite book. ❤

Read Stanley Payne for a full comprehensive history of the inner strife of the Spanish Civil War. It was the actual Spanish Socialists, Communists and Anarchists that overthrew the legally elected government. The overthrow was internal. Franco and the rest of the Army senior staff was reticent to become involved. It was the violence brought on the scene by the actual left-wing putschists that cause the Civil War. Payne has shown this with the same documentation and detail that Kotkin has demonstrated with his knowledge of Stalin. And yes, Stalin’s only interest in Spain was the Spanish gold. Later on when Stalin seized control of the Republican secret police.

Neuroscientist Iain McGilchrist covers what happens in the brain ( right hemisphere). Jill Bolte Taylor too. The self direction aspect with music is so interesting but I think it’s taught wrong for the right brain dominant kids, they have to be able to self direct and possibly have mentorship to help feed in a little theory ( which is innate in them due to being right Brain dominant and sending ‘whole’ in patterns and relationship which all the arts are)

This is a fascinating book that should be read by all students protesting without knowledge of history.

I loved this book. It’s a masterpiece. I am an artist but I greatly appreciate mathematicians, to say the least. Perhaps we share a lot in common because we are often searching for formulas of perfection and truth. The story was sexy, spooky and so sophisticatedly written. I felt the same obsession with it as I did when I read The Goldfinch. Congratulations Ethan for an outstanding work of written art.

I saw a documentary about Hearst on CNN and Toobin was spot on correct. It all made sense and I agree with him. He connected the dots along with tons of others who were there with Hearst at this time. It was a documentary mini series called The Radical Story of Patty Hearst (2018).
