    This is the one I've been waiting for! Love the RGGS method. No 3D printer access in Tasmania has had me looking through un-named hardware stores for ages to try and look for makeshift options for spikes, who knew they were there in front of us all this time, just waiting to be cut out hahaha Excellent work!

    Hi Hoocho, why not cut each spike both waysalong the gutter leaving a centimetre of uncut pipe, and then fold both up together making one spike. Like a folding ladder. The wick will then fold over both sides into the gutter. Should be stronger, neater and more effective. I don't know how to send a pic. Hopefully you get the gist of it. Cheers Russ

    The timing of this is so perfect! I have been pretty close to making a decision about how to go about a vertical tower- buy a 3d printer, buy premade, or source all pieces…and I was driving myself nuts. This is more accessible and I just so happened to buy a heat gun last week. Thank you!

    "Everything should be as simple as it can be, but not simpler" ... This is a 10 out of 10 - Excellent!
    Once a solution is achieved, another problem usually arises, and the cycle starts again. - so now...... on to the float valve :ø)
    Insight is the sudden aha! solution to a problem, the birth of a new idea to simplify a complex situation. Thanks for sharing and caring.

    I went and bought some downpipe and the second the store employee said "no its downpipe, why would you want to block the ends" it clicked for me.
    Tradies have a single use for downpipe, and tradies are who the DIY stores serve. I really love your solution though, saves me 3d printing end caps.

    Another means for a dirt cheap wick could be a cotton mop , inexpensive and readily available . Keep up the good work , definitely headed in the right direction . Much love Hoocho from uk 🇬🇧

  • @VanillaAttila
    @VanillaAttila Před 9 měsíci +1

    You can do a double spike, fold up to meet eachother and the wick can be looped thru to hold them together. that way they will stay upright and be more rigid.

  • @davidleonard1511
    @davidleonard1511 Před 9 měsíci +1

    I could even see this as a tiered system tying two or more together even with different levels, but with different levels, additional float valves would be needed. This is a really cool idea. I could totally feel your excitement and agree. I can't wait to try this when I move back to the states.

  • @SwiftCurse
    @SwiftCurse Před 4 měsíci +1

    Had an idea to make it even cheaper possibly?
    If you grew large diameter Bamboo, and smaller Diameter Bamboo.
    You could use the larger one as the rain gutter, and the smaller one as your grow spike.(cut in half, sharpen it and put holes for wicks)
    valve light cover(another bamboo piece cut in half should work)
    Then you could grow your own system, all you need is the valve

    Short lengths of 20mm PVC pipe with the end heated and wedged could do the same thing, the drill a few holes for wicks. It might be a little more robust that the thin wall gutter or pipe which ever you use.

    Very Impressive Hooch! My towers follow a similar melt-and-mend structure to save on no net pots or PVC addons. I wouldn't say your grow stick is obsolete though! I am actually printing out your spikes as we speak, and I know here in southern California, lots of bugs love any source of water they can find, and since these are directly on the ground, that large opening is a good opportunity for them to get inside the gutter and clog or just plain multiple and then go for your delicious crops! Still, very crafty and definitely works for people who don't have access to a 3d printer!

    • @willulearn

    Thanks for doing all the thinking for us. I also melted the end of the gutter, but your way of folding it up makes it less leakable. No end caps is a great method.
    I cut 2 slits at the bottom of my 7-gallon (26-liter) fabric grow bags. I feed worn socks through them as the wicks. It's a tad bit more work, but I think it should do as well.

    I love this idea. I'm also using the downpipes as cheap hydroponic containers and they are superb. I've also been using a wooden frame to anchor the plastic as I heat it, but in addition I've shaped the template with 45 degree angles so that only the part of the pipe I intend to bend is being heated. This makes it easier to bend to shape as the rest of plastic remains firm, then I use a damp cloth to quickly cool the edges as I hold it in place.
    I love this channel, thank you for all the work you put into your videos. It's only because of your excellent tutorials that I had the confidence to make a start with hydroponics.
