    I’ve seen you rage at lapped cars in races before, would you ever do a guide on how to lap and how to be lapped, including as many of the scenarios you’ve found yourself in through the years?

    • @PaulC3K
      @PaulC3K Před 2 lety +53

      The best advice for lapping & being lapped, IMO, is pretty straight forward - Communicate your intentions as early as possible. No last minute decisions/surprises for others to react to etc.
      You dont need VOIP, chat, or indicators, just position yourself in advance so the other party should be able to understand your intention. Try and make the decision and the move early enough that the other party can see and process your intentions and theres a far greater chance of it going smoothly. Parking your car in the middle of the road gives a clear msg - youre either against the lapping here, or youre making your intention to send it here. You dont need the element of surprise when passing/being-passed. Be clear - communicate your intentions.
      Also, if your planning to let someone pass at the end of the straight - dont do it at the very end. Its beneficial to you both doing it earlier and dragging it out longer. Lift and coast so the speed delta is minimal but sufficient, and then tuck in behind well before the braking zone. The benefits is pretty significant. You both should be able to attack the next corner without any uncertainty, they dont approach the corner slower thinking you're not getting out the way meaning you both go through slower, theres FAR less chance of you tucking in badly and clipping them... its a win-win for everyone. Its safer, faster, and theres no uncertainty. Last minute braking and then aggressively tucking in to lose less time is filled with risks & time loss.

    • @reillyploplis7457
      @reillyploplis7457 Před 2 lety +16

      If you’re in a slower car, most of the time guys in faster cars just want you to follow the racing line, especially in the corners, they will probably just overtake you on the straight. Now if you’re in the same class of car, I wouldn’t know what to tell you. If I get a blue flag I just let off the throttle on the straights then tuck in on the corners

    • @carlwhite3471
      @carlwhite3471 Před 2 lety

      When lapping I've always given the driver ahead a couple of flashes when closing up and then when i intend to pass. Best done along a straight as you're intentions aren't to put the driver off just to make him aware you're coming.

    • @siddkumar8032
      @siddkumar8032 Před 2 lety +2

      Usually the getting lapped part occurs down the straight but if not communication is key. If you want to pass me for the corner coming up, line you car up slightly left or right of my car (depending on where the inside is) and that makes your intentions super clear to me.

    • @peterrrr
      @peterrrr Před 2 lety +1

      @@reillyploplis7457 What I do when we have the same category cars is I stick to the racing line, out of the corner lift just a little bit so the lapping car is getting a faster exit, then wait for the lapping car to make a move then lift a little more so I'm overtaken fast, tuck behind and we off to our own merry ways.

    • @Frentzen127

      Isn't the rule of thumb that you need to be about 1/3 of the way alongside to claim space? A sliver of bumper isn't enough to just pretend to be able to go side by side on that corner

    • @MrSpanks
      @MrSpanks Před 2 lety +1

      Just a really clumsy incident!
      You actually see similar to this quite frequently (in real life!) at this corner sequence but usually the guy on the outside of the RH'er knows to give more room since you can come out of the RH'er side-by-side and usually have the advantage coming off the corner.

    • @Eat-MyGoal
      @Eat-MyGoal Před 2 lety +4

      But that's not the rules or etiquette of racing. It was the Lambo's corner - and clearly his corner - and the Audi needs to back out and concede the place. At some point the car in the lead has to turn in to make the corner. He was near as damn it all the way ahead and in no position to judge if contact was likely. On the flip side the Audi driver had complete visual reference regarding where he was on the track and where the Lambo was and in a much better position to see contact was likely if he continued on the line he was taking. And seeing as he was pretty much entirely behind at this stage it's 100% his fault. No question. No debate...

      By the looks of it I would have leaned towards No Further Action.
      Reasoning being that the series I'm in has a rule for leaving space for other cars. The #46 was still alongside, even if not fully, so #25 can't force them off-track. But, #25 was the only one suffering damages in the form of a time loss, so No Further Action.
      Full agree on the first bump though, #46 should have left a bit more space.

      Hmmmm interesting! It'd be lovely if racing was that clear-cut - It's not! (No question. No debate...)
      Both cars could have and, if they were experienced racers (in a real car that they have to pay for!), should have got through the RH'er side-by-side with no contact. That would have satisfied the rules AND the etiquette of racing!
      On that sequence of corners, the pass wasn't complete and it was a bit silly not to leave more room for the Audi considering the Lambo would have come out of the RH'er in front. Again - clumsy incident!

    Very helpful series. I often play with my cousin who admittedly watches a lot more motorsports than I do, and therefore probably knows the rules better. I try to drive very clean and rely mostly on slingshot maneuvers to overtake, whereas he often just bombs my inside on brake zones. We often have crashes with maybe 1/4-1/2 car overlap where I can't really see that he's made a move on me, and already very committed to my line. We often crash this way, and can't agree who's at fault

    The Lamborghini needs to be put more as fault as well. Like a 50/50 situation to me. As much as the audi should've backed out for the second part of the corner the Lamborghini 100% positioned themselves to take a racing line as if the Audi wasn't there. You can see that as the connect the first time the Lamborghini is perfectly lined up to steal the apex. I believe if they didn't connect the first time the Audi would've been lined up with the door at least and rightfully deserved the inside

    • @danielo7985
      @danielo7985 Před 2 lety +2

      Heavy disagree, going into the 2nd last corner (exit of vale) the Audi is nowhere near significantly alongside the Lambo to warrant room, he literally pit manoeuvres him, how can that be a racing incident?

    • @Infigo96
      @Infigo96 Před 2 lety +2

      "You must always leave the space". I do agree. Could the Audi back out? Yes certainly....but is he entitled to some space, I think so. He also have inside for the next "2" corners (half a corner and a kink and t1) so I believe it is a reason to want to stay there.
      It all is in the definition of alongside....in the leagues I race, that is alongside and lambo at fault. Other leagues and others may disagree.
      That is what I think about the simracing world is much more to the, must leave room side and I like that. Had the audi sent it in to be at that position it would be the audis fault....but he was always there so no supprise really for him to still be there. Had the Lambo cleared the audi and moved over and audi then popped his nose in then it is 100% audi...but in this...I blame lambo.
      Leave room, Lambo is in a position to get the better exit anyway so why risk it

    • @CaveMan3105
      @CaveMan3105 Před 2 lety +2

    I'd only disagree with the weaving on the straight one. "Braking the tow" should be allowed, and he only did one right and one left sweep, so not too aggressive. Then during the overtake he slowly moved to the right, to push the opponent to the inside of the next corner. That's where Jimmy, and maybe the FIA, sees him at fault. But it wasn't under braking and wasn't cutting right in front of him too quickly. He moved over to make the overtake harder and the contact 11:58 happened way before the overtaking car ran out of space.

      @Jimmy_Broadbent  Před 2 lety +6

      Doesn't matter how slow the movement is, its still weaving/reactive defending AFTER already making a defensive move. Its not even an FIA thing, pretty much every series will slap you for this.

    12:13 looks to be also a correction to avoid the grass on the left (but controller input makes the move too big). For it to be a defensing move it was too subtle I think, although he was cutting across the track "sneakily".

    I genuinely loved this video, mostly because of the actual real-life racing insights, code of conduct, however you want to name it, being applied and explained in great detail. You rarely hear these "unwritten rules" explained so well. Absolutely would love to see more of this, it's honestly a lot more informative than it is funny, but that's what makes it great.
